Guest Oakilydoakily Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Can anyone suggest a reasonable GPS that is not over the top in functionality and reasonably priced. I have been looking at the Garmin 196, but I'm told it could be an overkill for what I need. My trike is a bare minimum - Altimeter, Tacho, ASI, Eng Temps. I plan to do a lot of cross country... Ooops I think I posted this under another forum heading ...sorry
flyingflea125 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Hi just use my Navman GPS, same I use in car, but I zoom the map screen out and display the speed (in KM). It's fine for general flying and maps in colour with big screen.
Guest Oakilydoakily Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 How does it go when you are flying in country terrain and not much in the way of roads?
flyingflea125 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 When you zoom out, it still shows names of towns close by, rivers, coastlines, forests etc... so for XC as a cheap alternative to expensive aviation gps, it's ok, I would still do manual calculations, but you have the added benefit of using GPS to help keep you on track and check your ground speed. Obviously it won't do flight calculations and show airspace.
