Tomo Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I'm up for a new watch, and I've had a bit of a look around and thought that seeing that I will be a pilot before to long, it would be cool to get a pilot's watch (or one with a compass etc... on it) So question is, has anyone got some good pointers on good brands, or styles? also being in the cheapish range would be rather important for my well being!! Thanks
geoffreywh Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I wouldn't get anything associated with "pilots watch" they're useless rubbish..I have one...I believe the electric motor in it causes radio noise...Get a mechanical watch at least 42mm dia. prefer white face black numbers, should have arabic numerials and show individual minutes. AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE. I got mine, an ARBUTUS made in USA from "Grays online for $75 an absolute beauty.....look at Junkers from Germany...very similar...Good luck...G
shags_j Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Agree. Just grab a watch that is very easy to read with minutes marked. That's all you will need. Go to fancy and you will get very irritated. Other than that just go preference for price, style etc. I can't handle metal or leather bands so I tried to find one with a rubber band. Found a tag huer on special with a fantastic dial and stop watch that was perfect.
BLA82 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Well I disagree, I have a casio Pro Trek it might not be a designated "Pilots watch" but it does have an altimeter which is accurate, a barrometer and a compass which is also accurate. No radio interference with radio and 100% charges with Sunlight. Best watch I have ever owned.
bushcaddy105 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Try the Citizen Promaster range- I bought a pilot version in Singapore in 1994 and it hasn't missed a beat since. Useful for stopwatch, alarm & countdown timer when flying, plus 2 extra time zones on digital display (main display is analogue and easy to read) Not cheap in Oz, but quality (nearly) always costs!
Guest bigblockford545 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I've got a Suunto X9mi, fantastic watch, Altimeter/Baro, Compass, Stopwatch, Dual time ect. The GPS does work but takes a while to get a lock. Apparently the Sunnto X10i's GPS is much better. Simon
ahlocks Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I've got a watch, with hands, so I can tell the time without having to put my glasses on. I wear it when I take 'the beer can' for a run too. 'spose that'd make it a pilot's watch....
Guest basscheffers Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I hate watches, always have. Can never get used to them... I started wearing a heart rate monitor one for running (so no more than an hour at a time, which is bearable!) and when I started doing navs, I decided I might as well set it to Zulu. So that is my "pilot's watch"! :) When I own a plane, it will have a clock and stopwatch put in so I don't need to wear one!
ahlocks Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 ... it will have a clock and stopwatch put in so I don't need to wear one! 'zactly! Planes have compass, altimeter/barometer, probably a timer and heaven forbid, often a GPS as a built in feature. So, a clapped out old analogue watch should suffice. (Or digital if your eyes aren't stuffed :black_eye:) Can't think of any necessity for fancy watch to be a pilot.........i_dunno ==============
Guest Maj Millard Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Which reminds me of a joke... Q. " How do you tell the pilots at a party ?. A. " They're the ones with the big watches and the small dixxs !...." Currently don't wear a watch, and don't miss it. I do however have a real good panel mounted clock, which does the job perfectly..............

Tomo Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 Thanks for all the input guys... It looks like there's about a 50-50 to those that like watches to those that don't!! But at present I don't have one, 'cause me other one the face got broken and fell off, and then I lost the hour hand of all things, so it's not much use! and I do miss it... so thats why I'm looking around for another one, and I had the idea about the pilots watch thing, but I new that not many people seem to like them. So thats why I thought it worth the asking... and now I don't know which way to go!! Cheapest probably... Anyway better go and get ready for some flying... Oh Gee, got to leave in 10 minutes...
Guest basscheffers Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 If you do wear a watch normally, I'd just go with regular a dual time one; set the hands to local and the digital part to UTC.
Guest pelorus32 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 This one's been done before on the forums so a quick search may turn up some other thoughts. I don't wear a watch - haven't for years. I share a Casio watch with my daughter for flying. It is solar rechargeable and allows me to set both zulu and local time. The band is too short to go around my wrist though so it's a bit of a pain. Regards Mike
turboplanner Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 You two czsports jockeys could also think about a sundial
Admin Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Which reminds me of a joke... Q. " How do you tell the pilots at a party ?. A. " They're the ones with the big watches and the small dixxs !...." Or A. "Don't worry about it because they will come and tell you"
slartibartfast Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I use my phone. It has 5 countdown timers and 5 countup timers, so I can have one go off every 6 minutes for a pos check, and others running for trip time and leg times. The application is SPB Time. I haven't worn a watch for decades.
68volksy Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 I've got a Suunto watch also. Couldn't tell you exact model but it's got compass, barometer, altitude etc. Great value for what you get and has nice big numbers that are very easy to read at a glance. I wouldn't be wearing it out to dinner necessarily but for a flying watch I think it's great.
Tomo Posted March 24, 2009 Author Posted March 24, 2009 I like to watch.Does that count? Depends what you watch...The sun? some hands ticking around a circle?, its always forward too!
turboplanner Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Trouble is your alarm goes off after 30 seconds
Guest Maj Millard Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 If anyone has a spare Brietling laying around (even a used one ) I'll take it off your hands no problems............................................................
Tomo Posted March 26, 2009 Author Posted March 26, 2009 I just found a fancy type of watch... the brand is Tissot... My uncle actually has one I just found out as well, and they are a beautiful watch...but have an amazingly expensive price! They look just like an ordinary analog watch, but my uncles is the new touch screen type, so you just touch the thing you want... be it Temp, compass, altitude, air pressure, and a heap of other stuff I can't remember now... very easy to use...and see... Unfortunately it's hugely out of my price range, so I can only go on drooling over the pictures....and my uncles arm...
Guest Maj Millard Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Tissot have been around for a long time, a good swiss watch. If you really want to drool go to the Brietling website, even the old used ones will make you drool. They are the watch of choice for airline pilots......................................................
