Robin Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Jamestown SA has 1300m strip right next to town. Four pubs, resteraunt and coffee shops etc Carrieton SA has grass strip walking distance to North of town and a pub. Anyone know if there is a strip at edge of Lake Eyre? Love to camp out.
Robin Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Thanks Might stay with friends in CooberPedy and just fly over
Guest roadk99 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 We went from William Creek to Mungrannie Hotel for lunch last month. you fly over the pub and one of the owners come and pick you up at the air strip.great meal and very friendly.its on the Birdsville track. and fly back over Lake Ayer.
leestanley Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Also try Brown Brothers at Milawa, nice dirt strip, a short stroll to the winery. you need prior permission to land Here is the link for Milawa... Brown Brothers Also, Barwon Heads (YBRS) has tea and coffee and the very friendly Barb and there is a fresh seafood retailer next door. Last weekend they said they were going to crank up hot food in the near future... Lee.
Relfy Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I did an overnight reccy to Hungerford (Sth QLD on the historic NSW/QLD border dingo fence) yesterday and inspected the strip. Excellent sealed strip with an excellent unsealed cross strip and the publicans will come and pick you up if you do an orbit over town. Free camping in town with excellent facilities and the stars overhead...wow. Oh, great meal at the historic Hungerford Pub too. Well worth a visit. I know it's not really in the south, but it's sth QLD and on the track to a lot places out west.
Guest brentc Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 This one is east of Geelong on the Bellarine peninsula at a winery. They have a restaurant although a month ago it didn't have a cook. Lighthouse - Air strip
K-man Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 The Underground Motel at White Cliffs is another interesting ans enjoyable place to stay. The guys will pick you up and deliver you back to the strip.
skydog Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Asses ears is a great spot to stay. Nice spot for an overnighter or even drop in for fun. Big wide long grass strip. You can get the lat & long off the web by typing in asses ears. lots of backpackers stay here, has a swimming pool. Kingston SE is a great place to fly in & stay too. Strip is just about 1 km walk from town and the best pubs at 35 bucks a night accomodation and fresh fish & chips! Dennis Borchardt builds his lightnings there and is a very nice man to chat with.
flie43 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Gidday Donkey, I actually took Sam for a fly in J230 a few weks back cause he is keen to get started again. And Skydog yes you can use the strip, fly in , have a nice coffee and a meal if you like. I think the Wang Aero Club have form to use for access 57 213845 or ring Brown Brothers. Terry
JG3 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Arkaroola is worth a visit. Very aircraft friendly hosts. Overfly the resort and call on 126.7, and someone will pick you up from the airstrip several miles away. Unleaded, premium and avgas available. They'll probably lend you a vehicle to come and go and see the sights. Accomodation ranges from deluxe, to a bunk in a donga for $15. Spectacular geology, really interesting history, and an excellent celestial observatory. The most impressive part of the Flinders Ranges.
Guest basscheffers Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Overfly the resort and call on 126.7, and someone will pick you up from the airstrip several miles away. Their website says they charge $55 for the transfer.
Guest Decca Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Bass I tried googling Arkaroola & got a couple of websites up, but nothing to indicate a transfer cost. Can you give us a specific website please? Regards, Decca.
Guest basscheffers Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 It's here. The $55 is in the graphic with airstrip info. Seems a bit steep for such a short ride, especially considering you are probably there to pay for a room and buy meals, fuel, supplies and possibly tours too!
JG3 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I've been in there a couple of times and no charge. Just the opposite, offered a free car for our use. And we weren't big spenders on accomodation either, just brilliant hospitality.
skydog Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Arkoola in the ERSA I see the strip is in the ERSA but the frequency to call them is given as 126.4 not 126.7 and prior permission required. What exactly is the runway surface like guys?
skydog Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Thanks I was looking at Arkaroola not Arkoola, is it the same place? not sure now
Guest basscheffers Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Recommendations from Parafield? I'll have to take the missus on our first overnight trip soon! Any ideas where to go from Parafield? Looking for something within 200nm or so with nice accommodation, meals and interesting to go for a hike or so. The idea would be to fly out saturday morning, do some hiking, relax, fly back Sunday morning. The obvious choice would be Rawnsley Park, but we've recently been there. (by car) definitely recommended; good accommodation and The Woolshed restaurant is superb.
brilin_air Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Just came back from Arkaroola, there were 6 planes went in and they came and picked us all up in their minibus, there was no charge for us to get picked up and the people were fantastic at the station, fuel was available at about $2 p/litre which was cheaper than William Creek. Fantastic place to stay and we will be returning soon. If you think that $55 is a bit steep to get picked up it is a whole lot better than walking out there for the 6 kms, we would have paid it gladly. Brian
Guest basscheffers Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Weird, the Country Airstrip Guide also speaks of transfers and courtesy car, but nothing about charges for it, which is similar to people's experience. Makes you wonder why that differs so much from the website.
dunlopdangler Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Dalby aerodrome has a designated camping area (some powered sites are available), toilets but no showers...we are trying to get the council to do something and word is that a new terminal will be going in with shower facilities. A little distance away we have Jimbour house with own sealed strip and cellar door but remember "The Limit For You is (less than) 0.02".
JG3 Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Here's an example of what's possible. This photo is Elliston, SA. The airstrip is right close to town and the seaside. Kingston, SA is also a seaside town with the airstrip right close to town. Home of the 'Big Lobster', excellent seafood, and seaside atmosphere. We really do need a listing of such places, based on real experience by other fliers. JohnG
Guest basscheffers Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Are you sure that is a photo of Kingston? Your description of why to go there sounds about right, but your photo looks nothing like what I am seeing on Google Maps! Close to Kingston, Robe also looks like a pretty good place to fly to: close to a nice town.
quentas Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Are you sure that is a photo of Kingston? Looks like Elliston to me.
