winsor68 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Ok..so this wasn't a flying trip...but a trip to an airfield... Days off...nothing much to so I just took a nice ride out to Palmyra Airfield south west of Mackay...Had previously seen a Thruster being flown from there...This time it was deserted with a few machines extending the drag strip run off area. I spoke with a gentleman their called Greg and he showed me inside his hanger....he has a beautiful RV9a...said it took him about 2 years to build at a cost of about $80 000...cruises at 150knots. It is the only Homebuilt at the strip...all the rest are GA except the Thruster 503 which is for sale. There is 8 hangers there and 2 more about to be built. Should have asked to take a photo... 1
JG3 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Palmyra - I've been wanting to find out more about that field. Emails bounced, phone numbers not right...... That's the only field near Mackay, eh?? Permission required?? Any relevant details?? JohnG
winsor68 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 Unfortunately I did not get any contact details...I did not want to force the issue... I will be going back out again in the hope of catching up with the gentlemen who has a Thruster there...Apparently there is another field near Marion not far from Palmyra as the Sparrow flies and I will investigate that too...have heard there are a few trikes, gyros and parachute operations are conducted there.
JG3 Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Yes, please do find out what you can. It'd be good to find an open airfield in the Mackay area. It's a long way for ultralights from St Lawrence to Bowen. Any other airfields along that stretch, besides Flaggy Rock?? JohnG
matto Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 There is lakeside airpark just east of bloomsburry. I think there are some members on the forum but not sure of who or contact details
Doug Evans Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I fly from lakeside, contact is Gary poole 0418711224 no fuel
JabSP6 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Windsor, JG3 & Matto I have also flown into Palmyra on several occasions when having to go to meetings in Mackay. I work with a gentleman that has a hanger at the Marion airstrip and he gave me contacts of some people at Palmyra. Marion doesn't have fuel but Palmyra has a fuel bowser and the guys are only too happy to help out with organising to meet me there and fuel up when required as long as you give them plenty of notice. It is a very beautifull part of QLD to fly around. No landing fees. Just great hospitality by these wonderful folk. Pm me if you are interested in the contact details Cheers JabSP6 2
winsor68 Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 Of course for anyone passing through Proserpine is now open to Ultralights again... Thanks to some lobbying from keen flyers who wish to remain anonymous...

KOL Posted October 21 Posted October 21 I deliver Learn to Tow Training at Palmyra and typically drive up from NSW, visiting Toowoomba, Bris, Rocky and Mackay. Ex Mackay and Townsville resident. I'd like to fly up for my next visit on 20 21 22 Dec 2024. Who do I contact for PPR landing and fuel (avgas)?

Send me a pm and I'll give you mine and two other phone contacts. PPR is necessary as its a private strip and is closed a few times a year when the drag strip is in use (an example is this Friday and Saturday coming its closed to aircraft and we cannot be at the hangars during the closure times - insurance reasons) Orientation is 18/36 at 700 meters and sealed, ELV 60 FT, Freq 132.05. AvGas available, toilets and shower. All circuits are Downwind on West side; 18 right hand circuit, 36 left hand circuit (CTA very close to East). Parking is best on hangar side and at northern side of hangars. Cheers 1
KOL Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Will do. Obviously no drag racing when I am using the venue for training. I'm also familiar with the site, having been there several times to deliver towing training. Thanks for this info "All circuits are Downwind on West side; 18 right hand circuit, 36 left hand circuit (CTA very close to East). Parking is best on hangar side and at northern side of hangars."

All good , also meant to add that the strip is not the drag strip it is the sealed roadway between the drag strip and the hangars. It is used as the return road by the drag race cars from the drag strip back to the pits. And two wind socks at each end area on the east side. My hangar is the second one from the Northern end.
