Guest ozzie Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Our local fortnightly paper reported that on the 19th of April, Nancy Bird Walton's ashes were going to depart from Luskintyre Airstrip in the Hunter Valley aboard a Tiger Moth with her grandson and were to be accompanied by two other Tigers carrying her daughter and grand daughter. The three aircraft were going to fly to Kew, where Nancy spent most of her childhood and scatter her remains over the town. But the weather was reported to have 'clagged ' in at Taree and prevented the three Tigers from making their planned destination. Her family decided that Nancy would be more at home above Luskintyre were she could share the skies with the Tigers every Saturday. The three Tiger Moths took off as a large flock of Pelicans flew overhead. Her grandson scattered Nancy's ashes above the Field and later said that they seemed to climb higher into the sky as the sunshine at last came out. A forth Tiger flown by Phil Unicombe joined up with the three Tigers and as they returned over the Field, Phil peeled off to signify the "Missing Man" formation. When the Tigers landed a large eagle flew over the hangers for some time. The family are pleased with the outcome and remarked that Nancy would have preferred it this way as she can now fly with the aviators from the Hunter Valley.
Simonflyer Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Great story ozzie. Ive just finished reading her book "My god!Its a woman" and she was one serious trailblazer.Bloody brilliant. What an incredibly full life she lived.Very inspiring..
Guest ozzie Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 I also read the book over the weekend.. I feel privilaged to now share the Hunter Valley skies with her. I remember the Tiger Moths flying in formation that day. Luskintyre is just a few K's away from home Ozzie don't forget "lunch with the Tigers" on the first Saturday of every month at Luskintyre.
