Planning a trip from Sydney to Bundaberg for the air show in a couple of weeks and then onto Townsville in a Jab. Stay in Townsville about a week and then returning. Would appreciate any hints on best places to land and for fuel etc. particularly up North. Will all be octa.

Hi, Wayne. Assuming you leave Bundy with full fuel, you could re-fuel at Shute Harbour (Airlie Beach) in the Whitsundays or perhaps Lakeside Airpark between Mackay and Proserpine (not sure of the details there). As far as Townsville goes, email me and I will give you some options for landing / parking here. I have a Jab and am based in Townsville.

Avgas available at Gladstone, but it is less than 100 from Bundy. Rocky is controlled so there is nothing much before Shute harbour.

Thanks Yenn, Yes, I will be stopping at Gladstone to top up. I'm flying an LSA with a 65 Ltr tank. Endurance about 230 so say 3 hours safe at 90 kts = 270nm (The distance between Gladstone and Shute Harbour) Nil wind ok... but would be nice to know if there is somewhere in between where I can get fuel.

Thanks again.

You'd be better off at Shute Harbour than at Lakeview Airpark, for on the spot fuel supply. Although very friendly at Lakeside, I'm not sure if they are set up for fuel supply. If you want to do Gladstone- Shute, I'd be putting a 20 ltr jerry on board with additional fuel, you then have the option of stopping at either St Lawrence or Emu Park to put that fuel in the tanks. You should then make Shute OK. Not always of course, but generally you'll get a tailwind up the coast when coming North.
