dunlopdangler Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Great engineering, Portugese island of Madiera has this new airport and I thought that most would find it interesting, some stats; runway length 2781metres, of which 1,000metres is supported by 180 pillars, each pillar is approx 50metres in length (or 17floors) The runway is designed to take 747's...and would be a bit like landing on an aircraft carrier (abiet a longer one). note the airport parking etc under the runway...:peepwall:
Guest Maj Millard Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Great idea, we could just line up across the runway and just launch off the side !
Deskpilot Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 An excellent utilization of space and an international land-mark.
perthjay85 Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 now that is super impressive. some people just have fantastic imaginations and big brass uns to suggest an idea like that in the first place

Tomo Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 While where on the subjects of amazing engineering... for all you who haven't seen it yet, this has to be the coolest design, and so simple! The Falkirk Wheel!
Guest JRMobile Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Ps. Have any of you seen this bridge? Had the thrill of driving across this bridge two weeks ago - a truly amazing piece of engineering. JR

Mick Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 I bet the locals loved having that Airport built on there coast...AHHH the tranquility..... Yes, but it makes for a most civillised "beach" landing!!!!!!
Guest Qwerty Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 While where on the subjects of amazing engineering... for all you who haven't seen it yet, this has to be the coolest design, and so simple! The Falkirk Wheel! I went on this thing a few years ago. It is a good piece of engineering.
farri Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Engineers........yu gotta love em. You bet,my son is a civil engineer and manager of Maunsell/Aecom firm in Cairns. Frank.
Simonflyer Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Yeah thats all good and fine, but what about the engineering behind this, this or most importantly this.
turboplanner Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Easy, you study medicine, surgery, then get the vegemite, rock it in the wagon until it becomes silicon and inject it in.
Tomo Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 The sand man is a nice colour:thumb_up:, the vegemite is just grand! and yeah the other thing!, pretty average!
dunlopdangler Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 NO, NO Tomo, you get that other thing in the panel van, the vegemite is to keep your strengh up!! :hump:
hihosland Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 The Magdenberg water bridge is impressive however this one was designed almost 400 years earlier File:Anjodi on the Pont Canal de la Cesse.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and is one of several on the Canal du Midi. ineterestingly the locks on the canal were built to a design by Leonardo da Vinci
eightyknots Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I was wondering why the PIGS countries (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) were running such massive fiscal deficits. I have stopped wondering about Portugal: that bridge must have cost a motza.
