turboplanner Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Sorry - can't teach old dog new trick. Well at least warn them about the fleas then.
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Hey Graeme Yes that was me :) Did you look at my photo on my profile here or did you just guess it was me because I'm a girl? :P Did the weather get better for you? The clouds were pretty horrible when I was flying. We were going to do stalls but the visibility was too crap so we have to save that fun for next lesson... I apologise in advance if you see me and say hi and I completely don't recognise you, I can be pretty vague about those things! - DS
Guest Decca Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Thanks Dave. Dark Sarcasm, sorry I never officially welcomed you here, very remiss of me! [ulterior motive, let's string TurboTyper along here]. Regards, Decca.
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Why hello there Decca, it is a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for the welcome :) Perhaps I will visit Ballarat one day.... In other news, my preflight issues (the long ago original topic of this thread) are totally sorted, yay! I'm now on the hunt for a headset...
turboplanner Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I've posted on 4 sites and still haven't caught you Deccadence.
GraemeK Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Did you look at my photo on my profile here ...We were going to do stalls but the visibility was too crap so we have to save that fun for next lesson... I thought it might have been you, and yep I did check on the photo (must put mine up on my profile). I wasn't sure I'd be doing circuits because of the runway situation (only the short one was available on Monday, and no touch-and-goes because of the new grass) - so I did think about practising stalls, but as I was driving up I realised the clouds were too low for that - so not surprised. Stalls are a lot of fun - as long as you've got lots of air beneath you! I had a lesson with Jeremy on Friday - he helped me sort out a lot of my problems! Cheers
Guest Decca Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Thanks DS, would love to see you here sometime. Regards, Decca.
Tomo Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Hey you guys, pm Decca if you're coming out Ballarat way. Even on the off-chance you have to divert. I may divert from a trip up north one day Decca.... Ps. Welcome along DarkSarcasm.... Enjoy that flying!
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Cheers Decca Yeah stalls do look like good fun. I'm still rather disappointed that RAA won't let you do spins (they look like stacks of fun!) Good to hear your problems are sorted. Jeremy's a good instructor I reckon (in my vast experience and all) and his teaching style works for me so it's all good :) It seems everyone was at YLIL today...going to be there on Saturday too?
brilin_air Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Wasn't much good out Ballarat / Maryborough way! LOL Is it ever? You can guarantee 9/10 times it's nice somewhere, but Ballarat is either closed in or blowing a gale. My most humble apologies to all the Ballarat crew...:FeelGood: -Linda
GraemeK Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 It seems everyone was at YLIL today...going to be there on Saturday too? Nope - I'm booked in for the next three Wednesdays ......
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 I'm booked in for Wednesday 12th (can't remember what time though, go me), maybe I'll see you there :)
GraemeK Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I like to try for fairly early, when the air is stable, but late enough so the fog's gone ..... And while Jeremy sorted out some of my problems, there's plenty more lurking there!! But it's still great fun, just I'm a slow learner! And the rudder pedals on 4929? A bit of a bummer, but I think there's at least one ring on the aircraft, so grab it and use it to adjust the pedals. Good to see you met up with Neroli - she's a great lady, always good for a bit of a conversation. Oh, and on the Jab rudder pedals - just be careful adjusting them too far out because they can over-centre and lock - there's an AD out here. The YLIL Jabs have had the mod.
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 That was her name! Thanks :P She thought I was foreign which was pretty funny (happens far too often I'm afraid)... So you can take the rings off and put them on different pedals? Hmmm worth a look
GraemeK Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Yeah, with some difficulty though! I have the opposite problem, need to have them right in. And Neroli is the wife of the owner of YLIL, Roger.
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Yeah I worked out who she was, I just totally forgot her name :) And I agree, she is really nice. Good to hear about the rudder pedals, I'll have a stab at that if I get 4929 next time. When I discovered I could move the pedals out it made such a difference :P I am getting better at dealing with my lack of height though...
turboplanner Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Oh, and on the Jab rudder pedals - just be careful adjusting them too far out because they can over-centre and lock - there's an AD out here. The YLIL Jabs have had the mod. And when they lock, they lock like concrete, usually in the middle of a turn. I was one of the first to experience it, nearly cleaned up two aircraft - and the instructor didn't believe me, said "The pedals are hard, just push harder" - nearly pushed the Jab in two.
DarkSarcasm Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Oh, and on the Jab rudder pedals - just be careful adjusting them too far out because they can over-centre and lock - there's an AD out here. The YLIL Jabs have had the mod. Soooooo....the pedals used to have 3 different length options but now the YLIL Jabs only have two because they had this mod to stop them locking up? So next time I fly and move the pedals I won't need to worry about this happening right? :raise_eyebrow:
turboplanner Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 That sounds about right. I haven't heard about any problems since ours were modified.
Nezzie Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Hi All, I am with nong, and his first post to you darky. Show your instructor these posts - it is honest feedback for him. My students get my patter almost constantly while I watch them conduct their pre-flight. As they get better, they get to hear me less!! (but they know all the answers to the questions you asked in your post, & more). As a student, you are the payer, & you are paying for SERVICES your instructor should be providing. Do you want to be a good pilot? You can't get there on your own!! You NEED to get value for your money - because that will mean you will ask and therefore learn more. If you need telling a hundred times (not saying you do - it is just an example), then you should hear it 100 times. Remember this please - "If it all goes "pear-shaped", you will recall your training. If you didn't get the training - the only thing left for you is - PANIC". You intend to take friends for a fly, don't you? Well, you owe it to them to be the VERY best you can be - don't you think? (Imagine how you would go about telling the partner of a passenger you fatally injured exactly what happened........ !) This occurs, sometimes. The reason I mention this is because we tend to forget that even though we have the fancy title of "Recreational Aviators", (it sounds easy, eh?), it is a fact that we are ONLY as safe & capable as we have been taught to be. With TRAINING - it is a very safe & rewarding occupation. Push forwards, & enjoy your increasing abilities!! Cheers for now, Nezzie
DarkSarcasm Posted August 2, 2009 Author Posted August 2, 2009 Hey Nezzie, Thanks for the input. I've actually sorted everything...I realised it was something stopping me from asking the questions (some stupid thought in my head about me looking stupid or some such) and managed to beat that thought into a little pulp and ask all the questions I need to. As a result things are totally sorted with my preflight issues, I'm feeling loads more confident in myself as a pilot and I reckon I'm getting on better with my instructor as well! :) I intend to be the best I can be, it just takes me a little longer to get there sometimes:blush:
Nezzie Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Hi Darky, Thanks for your reply. I really like your last line mate, (and who cares how long it might take - the fact that you, & (everyone) gets there is the issue at hand, isn't it?). A jet pilot instructor friend of ours gave us some excellent insight the other day. "If you would send your wife, and / or kids up with them - they are ready. If you wouldn't - you ALREADY know what they need". I deduct from your post that you really feel you are going well ahead? Great. Can I suggest something to you? Look around you, and pick the pilot you think is THE BEST one in your area. (you'd send your wife / kids with them), and ask for his/her HONEST opinion about your ability, and for their advice. This person might seem "un-approachable", but don't let it rest - ASK them! Take on board their advice, DON'T feel unworthy - (you are a new pilot, asking for advice from the people you trust the most!). That makes you worthy. I hope to meet you some day mate! Regards, Nezzie
