diablo Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Hi there, I have a question about Jabiru SK maintenance. Is there an idiots guide available on the internet that details maintenance tasks to be carried out on the Jabiru at 25/50/100 hour intervals? What I am looking for a compact guide that details tasks and recommended spares (such as oil filters/air filter/lubrication product and consumables) that should be used for each specific task. many thanks diablo :kboom:
Guest Qwerty Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Diablo I had the same question and in the end I produced my own. Unfortunately it is not on this computer. PM me your email address and I will send you a copy of what I now use for my SP6T Jab. I suggest that you check that the correct consumables are listed as the ones on the charts are for the 6 cyl. Cheers, Qwerty
slartibartfast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 All the engine manauls are on Jab's website. That stuff is common and all there. I don't see a POH for an SK though.
Guest Qwerty Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Dear Mr Bartfarst I looked in those manuals for an inspection and maintenance chart. The nearest thing I found was an inspection chart that is not fit for use as a regular guide/checklist for maintenance, it is an inspection chart as it says on the top. I took the inspection chart and modified it drastically. I now have three lists one each for 50, 100 & 200 hrs, with additional notes on the 200 hr list for things like u/c bolts at 500 hrs. My lists also include items such as "Change oil" giving oil type and volume, "change filter" giving filter type, etc and these are on the correct interval list. What I now do is simply grab a copy of the list approriate to the interval and work through it step by step. I don't think any such list is on the Jab site. Compiling the lists specifically for my a/c took some time. Cheers, Qwerty
slartibartfast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Dear Mr Typewriter. Sounds like a great idea.
Guest Qwerty Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Would the esteemed Mr Bartfast like a copy? With little amendment they would be applicable to an outrageously painted jabiru aircraft. Qwerty:hug:
Derby Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Hi,Qwerty. You forgot the 25 hour maintenance on the engine, my j400 has to have the valve lash checked every 25 hours and oil. And I change the oil filter also. I use aeroshell w 15/50w good stuff. Rory
Guest Qwerty Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 My reading of the Jab manual was 50 hrs ?????? I'll check again. Anyone else care to comment.
slartibartfast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Yeah thanks qwerty. Might be useful. I think the Cheetah is a little more than an outrageously painted Jabiru, but that's probably the best insult I've had yet.
Guest Qwerty Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 My appologies Slarti, it was a typo, should have read "jabiru powered a/c". and BTW FYI calling something a Jabiru is NOT an insult. It is high praise indeed, not in the relm of Lightwing but praise nevertheless. As to service intervals the Jab manual is quoted below: "6.2 Periodic Checks After the initial 25 hours, check in accordance with para. 6.3. After 50 hours of operation, check in accordance with para. 6.4 & thereafter after each 50 hours of operation. After 100 hours of operation, check in accordance with para. 6.5 and thereafter after each 100 hours of operation. At TBO, overhaul in accordance with para. 6.7. 6.3 Check After Initial 25 Hours Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Remove engine cowlings, check engine mounts. • Thoroughly check engine for missing or loose bolts, nuts, pins, etc., & for abrasions. • Check induction and exhaust flange for loose bolts. • Check safety wires, cooling air ducts & baffles, ignition wiring & hose connections. • Oil Change 3.5 litres (normal aviation oil) • Change oil filter. • Prop check bolt torque. • Prop check – bolt tension • Inspect old filter. • Retorque cylinder head bolts (20 ft lbs) in diagonal pattern • Check tappet clearance and adjust as necessary (refer Para 7.8). (0.010" cold inlet and exhaust) • Check exhaust system. Check exhaust cap screw tensions and gasket condition. • Check fuel system for leaks & abrasion. • Check wiring for damage & for tightness. • Engine test run. Jabiru Aircraft Pty Ptd Instruction & Maintenance Manual Jabiru 3300 Aircraft Engine Solid Valve Lifter Models REVISION 0 1 2 3 Dated : Jul 2008 Page: 23 of 115 L:\files\engine_manuals\3300_engine_manuals\Solid_Lifters\Working copies\JEM3301-3_I&M.doc - Observe starting, warm up & acceleration behaviour to maximum RPM (10 seconds max) - Check temperatures & pressures. - Engine stop. 6.4 50 Hours Check Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Conduct the items shown under 25 Hour Check at para. 6.3. • Change oil filter. 6.5 100 Hours Check Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Conduct the items shown under 25 Hour Check at para. 6.3. • Change oil filter • Renew spark plugs, if necessary. 6.6 200 Hours Check Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Treat as per 100 Hour check, with the addition of a flywheel bolt check". So... at 25 hrs you do Para 6.3 work then at 50 hrs you "check in accordance with para. 6.4 & thereafter after each 50 hours of operation" Now para 6.4 says do the work in para 6.3 PLUS do the oil filter. The key words here are "& thereafter after each 50 hours of operation". There is no 25 hourly service. Bugger this, I'm calling Jamie. I'll get back to you. Qwerty
Guest Qwerty Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 The previous item was re the solid lifter 6 cyl engine manual. Here it is again more susinctly from the Hyd lifter engine manual. 5.2 Periodic Checks • After the initial 10 hours, check in accordance with section 5.3. • After the initial 25 hours, check in accordance with section 5.4. • After 50 hours of operation, check in accordance with section 5.5 & thereafter after each 50 hours of operation. • After 100 hours of operation, check in accordance with section 5.6 and thereafter after It it clear that maintenance is carried out "thereafter after each 50 hours of operation".... ie 50 hourly. Please don't argue with me.....this is directly from the Jabiru web site. Thanks for the reminder Slarti each 100 hours of operation.
Derby Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Hi Qwerty, this is what my instruction and maintenance manual says After the initial 25 hours, check in accordance with para. 5.3. If radial clearance exceeds 0.5mm (0.020"), repair carburettor. The overhaul work must be carried out to Jabiru specifications at an approved aeronautical service facility or by an approved Jabiru Service Centre. If necessary, changes to the TBO Limit due to operational experience, will be announced. 6.1 Lubrication System Oil Change, Oil Filter Change, Visual Check for Leaks. * Drain the oil while engine is still warm. * Change the oil filter at 100 hour inspection. * Fill with oil. Guest Qwerty Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Derby, and your point is?????? There was a question earlier in the thread re oil change interval. On my reading of the manual is is clear and unambiguous that the interval is 50 hrs for oil and filter. There was a comment that it should be 25 hrs.I am trying to clear this matter up. If I have missed something I want to know.
Derby Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Qwerty,I think you should read it again, in yours . - Engine stop. 6.4 50 Hours Check Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Conduct the items shown under 25 Hour Check at para. 6.3. ____________________________________________ • Change oil filter. And 6.5 100 Hours Check Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Conduct the items shown under 25 Hour Check at para. 6.3. _________________________________________________ • Change oil filter 6.3 Check After Initial 25 Hours Details of specific operations are shown in Chapter 7 "Maintenance". • Remove engine cowlings, check engine mounts. • Thoroughly check engine for missing or loose bolts, nuts, pins, etc., & for abrasions. • Check induction and exhaust flange for loose bolts. • Check safety wires, cooling air ducts & baffles, ignition wiring & hose connections. • Oil Change 3.5 litres (normal aviation oil) ___________________________________ • Change oil filter. • Prop check bolt torque. • Prop check – bolt tension • Inspect old filter. • Retorque cylinder head bolts (20 ft lbs) in diagonal pattern • Check tappet clearance and adjust as necessary (refer Para 7.8). I think you missed something.
Guest Qwerty Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Derby, You are going to have to spell it out for me. It seems plain to me: 1. do the listed work at the INITIAL 25 hr point. 2. at 50 hrs and at every 50 hrs thereafter do the listed work (as for the INITIAL 25 rh service) plus a filter. What have I missed?? I am an engineer, I have extensive experience dealing with specifications, the Jab manual seems clear to me. If I have misinterpreted the manual I would like to know how and where. I want to understand and I want to service my Jab in accordance with Jab's recommendations.
Derby Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Qwerty. AS I said, change oil at 25 hours and every 25 after that,as It says in 6.4 and 6.5 (50 and 100 hour checks) Ps I'm a marine engineer.
Guest Qwerty Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 No, you are wrong, what is says in the 50 hrs section (and again in the 100 hrs section) is "conduct the items shown under the 25 hr check". What they are saying is every 50 hrs "do the stuff on this list and here is where the list is" Not do this every 35 hrs.
Derby Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Qwerty, Ok but don't forget you only have 3.5 lts of oil in the engine.
Guest Qwerty Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 I have emailed jamie, I have also had plenty of recommendations to change oil at 25 hrs. I am waiting to see what Jamie says. I will take a lot of convinceing to change the oil at 50 hrs. What I am interested in is the actual recommendation from Jabiru, the apparent ambiguity in the manual and practice. It seems that everyone changes oil at 25 hrs.
