Guest Pop-top Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Hello all, So I'm at that truly meaningful point in a pilots life where I have saved my little pennies like mad! worked my butt off in job that I only do to pay for my flying and so ended up getting an end of financial year bonus (....sweeeeeet ) and am now ready to purchase my first head set! - checked out ebay but fairly certain I'd like a new one to last the next X amount of years. As questioned in past forums; I had asked for advice on what brand to get which seems to be the ongoing nominal debate...so I wont go there. But now I want to go to a one stop shop in Adelaide where I can try on a few and decide what fits my noggin best  Hopefully I wont cause too much debate again...or ill get confused and be back at the beginning of my research resembling this: or this: but Ideally looking for a place that sells Lightspeed Zulu's and Bose X, that will let me play with them  suggestions? (on second thoughts even somewhere in Melbourne city, Ill be there on a holiday/roadtrip in the next 2 weeks)
DarkSarcasm Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Can't help you with Adelaide, but I have been on a headset hunt in Melbourne recently... In Melbourne at Moorabbin Airport there are two shops about 5 mins away from each other, one with the Zulu and one with the Bose. Skylines Aviation has the Bose (guy there was very helpful) and Moorabbin Pilot Shop has the Zulu (MPS is a little room in Tristar aviation, if you think you're in the wrong place, you're actually not I found). If it helps at all, I thought that they were about the same weight/clamping-pressure and the ANR on both seemed quite good. When I tried on the Bose he had a recording of engine noise that he played to demonstrate the ANR, and all I can say is that my reaction was "WOW" (that was the first time I'd ever tried an ANR headset). At the Zulu shop, they didn't have a recording or anything so it was harder to tell but it seemed the same or at least close to the Bose ANR level (not that I'm an expert, haven't used ANR before). The main reason I've decided to get a Zulu rather than the Bose was partly the price ($1300 rather than $1500) and it comes with music/bluetooth. I figure that if I fly with it for a bit and hate it I can sell it on eBay and buy a Bose. So the decision is reversible :) EDIT: I just ordered a Zulu from Sky Shop (http://www.sky shop.com.au/ - take out the space in between sky and shop, if I leave it in it turns into XXXXXXX, not sure why) in QLD - $1250, plus $15 shipping (overnight apparantly). Many places seemed to have the set at $1290, so it seems I did ok price-wise. I hope this helps - Darky:cool:
Guest Pop-top Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 The only cheaper ones I found were on ebay, brand new from USA $1,005.50 AUS dollars, $94 postage to postcode 5000 Adelaide. Lightspeed Aviation - ZULU - ANR Headset - Battery Pwr:eBay Motors (item 270451560811 end time Sep-10-09 09:30:38 PDT)
DarkSarcasm Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I saw those, but don't forget you have to pay customs fees for purchases worth over $1000AU. I did a calculation and it came to about $200 in fees and there was lots of fuss with sending forms into customs etc. It didn't seem worth doing just to save $90-$100. There's more about that in the thread I started, Headset from Overseas Hope I've helped a little :) - Darky:cool:
Guest Pop-top Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Ahhh... I see. Thank you this is very helpful
DarkSarcasm Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I nearly fell into the same trap with the overseas thing, until I came on here and asked the helpful people :D
Barefootpilot Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I just bought a zulu and I'm very happy with it. I got it from the gold coast shop and ordered it at 3pm on a thursday and had it by lunch time on Friday. I fly in a very high noise aircraft (see radial engine with very little sound proofing) and I've tried boss, DC's X111 and a few others and I thought the zulu came out best. But you didn't ask that question did you? Try the pilots shop at Parafield they had a good selection of headsets last time I was there or ask around on here for all the local pilots and see if you can borrow one for an hours flight and really give it a test!
DarkSarcasm Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I think my instructor is planning on trying mine when I get it. He has a Bose, maybe I can convert him to a Zulu (bwahahaha)
Thx1137 Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 We could always ask our instructor if we can have a quick try too :-) I was going to but I didn't want to spend that kind of money early on so I didn't bother!
Guest Pop-top Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Thx1137 - Hey Steve, I think thats because all our instructors own bose. wish I knew someone who had a zulu at Aldinga DarkSarcasm - Awesome blog by the way! where did you get your diagrams?
DarkSarcasm Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I think the Zulus are still fairly new so that's why all the instructors seem to have Bose... maybe you could ask at the school or something to see if they'd keep an eye out for anyone with a Zulu and see if you could have a try? And thanks for the compliment :) I get all my diagrams from Google pictures (I figure I may as well let other people do the hard work for me!)
DarkSarcasm Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 If anyone is interested, I've posted a review of my lovely new LightSpeed Zulu headset HERE.
