Hey Jodie, I rang CASA last week, the new edition is due out June / July next year. Keep an eye online because it should be released earlier than that.

I feel for anyone who was looking for one like I was because you'll find it very hard to get hold of until the middle of next year.

Cheers,

There are a few at my airfield but with them all stating "Version 2 July 2007" (and keeping in mind how print-happy version controlled this industry is...) I assumed it must be waaaay out of date. then I saw the CASA sight and was wondering how long that page had been reading "COMING SOON"

Do you think there will be much difference? Would you recommend buying the 2007 edition or waiting a few months?

Hiya DestinyFlyer - I have the pdf of the 2007 version with the red toy plane on it. There is also a version with a photo of a red and white Sportstar (...I think) Do you know which version that is?

I do want to buy a proper one because I heard you can take them into tests. I don't know if they'd be so happy with my printed out pdf and bound with a paperclip, version 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

I've got an Old 99 model due to not being able to get a new one for quite some time, well I only tried this yr!

Still It's a great place to find info, and all the basic's aren't going to change overnight, so an older version isn't to bad. As is something like an ERSA.

BTW, I could look it up, but, does anyone know if it's requirement to carry a VFG on x-country flights... mind you it comes in handy anyway, but is it a 'do or die' situation?

My copy (version 2, JULY 2007) is the latest as far as I know, but it doesn't matter - it's out of date.

As Tomo says, it doesn't really matter, the BASICS aren't going to change overnight. I suspect the immediate aim of the new edition will be to get the new GAAP procedures right. There are many areas that need amending, mostly just typo's & grammatical adjustments. Also new circuit procedures still to come.

The aim of the VFR Flight Guide is "to help VFR pilots fly safely anywhere in Australia." It's a plain English interpretation of the CAO's & CAR's intended for private pilots but also an indispensable aid to recreational pilots, as we are also VFR pilots.

It's so handy in so many areas - Flight planning, sartime, available daylight time, communications procedures, circuit procedures, etc, etc.

If you don't have one I can't understand why. Beg, borrow or steal one, OR read it from your FREE copy of the RAAus CD you got with your membership.

Thanks Steven I meant to say it's not a mandatory requirement to carry the guide. It would just be another bit of ballast!

No worries Decca. My answer was more for Tomo though. :-) The VFG is very nifty but I certainly don't feel the need to carry it around. I do have a little T91 tablet PC I take with me though and it has the RA-Aus CD, VFG, AIP, ERSA, SportStar manuals, PocketFMS and OziExporer on it so I guess I do carry it around after a fashion :-)

I think the 50nm ERSA thing might be aerodrome specific (I have seen it on a few hire and fly forms) as I can't find any regulations about it.
