Guest Graham Lea Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 This was recently posted on pprune for those interested: The Oaks Airport (Sydney) Under Threat *URGENT* The Oaks Airport, Sydney's last remaining WW2 Airport, is under threat from a proposed 115' (35m) Mobile Phone Tower, to be built within the circuit area, adjacent to the north east of the airport. We believe this will be a deadly hazard to Aviation and Airport Users. The Oaks Airspace/Airport is extensively used for training, and has been since World War 2. We are presently working on restoring the Airport, for the benefit of Aviation in the Sydney basin and bringing Tourism to The Oaks and Wollondilly (more on our plans later)..... This Tower will jeopardise existing operations and will restrict (or even close) our opportunities for the future. We are URGENTLY seeking any help/assistance/suggestions/legal views etc., especially "Expert Opinions" that can help us make it clear to local authorities what a risk this proposed Tower poses and what a mistake it would be to let it be built. The Oaks Airport represents a great resource for Aviation around Sydney. We can't let it be compromised ! wanabigaplane Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 and Camden approach ? Wouldn't the tower also be in line with the approach / departure lane for Camden ? While training at The Oaks we would meet many aircraft from/to Camden. Jack.:ah_oh::ah_oh:
Smokey Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Hi Jack, The proposed tower site is on the airfield side of the bush fire bridade station. It's not tall enough to affect Camden inbound, not even the ones that fly though our circuit below circuit height , but it will certainly be tall enough to be in the way of someone doing an emergency return to field. Guest Graham Lea Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I could be wrong, but thought that the DA had already now been approved.... Graham
eastmeg2 Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Hmmm . . . Telstra acording to the media articles. I've not flown at the Oaks, but it seems from the drawings that you'd be unlikely to make the runway if you were without power below 115ft AMSL 250m diagonally away from the end of the runway.
IanR Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Not sure how high they are but the lights at the footy field would be a lot closer to the strip.
Guest carlholden Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Height of the Tower Hi All, Hi Graham, thanks for putting up the post. In simple terms the Tower is 100 feet taller than the average tree in the area. Over the years I/we have seen people fly at or below this height around that area for a variety of reasons - especially from our "Runway East". There are also a number of scenarios where it is clear that someone will fly into the proposed Tower, and the remains could fall on the Rural Fire Service building and the town's sewerage pumping station (also right beside the proposed Tower) and the high voltage mains (beside the Tower) that feed properties to the west. And the resultant litigation and community fallout could impact us. We (+ local residents) are currently trying to have the Tower moved to a better/less hazardous location, of which their are a number. After all using * commonsense * tall pointy things should not be put around Airports ! All the support the Aviation community could give would be welcome, as we have plans in place to restore / develop the Airport as a Community/Tourist asset, being the highest Airport in Sydney and the last remaining WW2 Airport. It is and will continue to be * Low noise/low impact/Community friendly * Hangarage and other enquiries welcome. Email: [email protected] Many thanks, Carl.
