Admin Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Times When You Just Have To Trust The Pilot..... 1. Lord Howe Island 2. 3. 4. 5. Outstanding job by a great young pilot from Pennsylvania ! Can't add anything else to this... the picture is worth 10,000 words! If you don't think our military pilots earn their pay, you need to take a look at this picture. This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a PA National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the back end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack, on a steep mountain cliff, and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear. If this does not impress you... nothing ever will. God Bless our military.
Guest Maj Millard Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Some fun approaches there Ian...............................................................
Guest JRMobile Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Number one looks very similar to Lord Howe Island approach. We had a holiday there a few years back and on very windy days the locals would park along the road adjacent to the strip and watch the incoming flights land. Great entertainment!
Guest rippler Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Well picked. That IS Lord Howe. There are plenty of pictures online to confirm. Awesome place for a holiday.
Admin Posted October 7, 2009 Author Posted October 7, 2009 I think the images may have got mixed up in the email that I was sent - doing a google search in images there also seems to be a mix up. I have deleted the names and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to name them So No1 is Lord Howe Island
Tomo Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Here are a few strips in New Guinea... I can't seem to find my photo of a strip that has a sheer cliff face at the end, the strip runs up the hill, so it's only a one way strip, with the cliff face on the approach end. But due to it being on the side of a mountain, there is a wind sock right on the front cliff face edge, and if it's blowing up the hill (up the strip), well you've got to aim at the cliff face on approach, and just hope you judged the wind correctly to lift you the last bit to the correct height of the strip. If you're to high, it's next to impossible to go around... to low, and you hit the cliff face... Guest Crezzi Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I think no.5 is a Canadian Military C47, can't remember where though. Somewhere around British Columbia ?? I think you meant CH47 Ossie - even a Dakota would struggle to land there Actually its a CH46 (or CH113 as it was known in the Canadian Forces) Cheers John
