Admin Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Maj, is that you with the pink rimmed glasses on i_dunno
Guest Qwerty Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 I love the Major's definition of upload. Thats hilarious.
Guest Maj Millard Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Yes that's me in the pink sunnies, and the gravel strip is 36-18 at Montpelier. It's more fun from the other end, running downhill and with a powerline at the threshold. Another strip runs along the fence just below it, which is the old wartime strip...............................
Tomo Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 That Storch? came to a bit of grief..... :ah_oh:
Tomo Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Yes that's me in the pink sunnies, There're the one's I gave your aren't they?! ;)
biggles Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Not a Jabiru to be seen from the " Legendary Major " .........hmmmm . What about an aerial shot of the Montpelier E/W strip Maj !! Bob
Guest Maj Millard Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Biggles, Would you like that strip photo WW2 or present ?.....the 29-11 strip at Monpelier used to handle B-17s during the war, and probabily still would, although it is now just a bit shorter. Not used as much as the other two, but always servicable. You have to watch for the ever-present small anthills popping up, and the odd long tailed jumping rodent. Tomo, Your little sister gave those to me... The broken Storch in the photos is not the same one, in one piece, in the hangar,(3515). The broken one uploaded (there's that word again) old fuel from a drum that was full of water, in the bush. How he actually got off the strip is a mystery to me, as both fuel bowls and filter, were full of water !!. Anyway he managed to aviate and get about a Kl down the dirt road when she quit. He tried to put it on the road, but a tree had other ideas (you can see the scar on the tree in one photo),and he tore the right wing clean off, plus the gear and prop.Must have been some ride !. Pity really, because the road was landable for a Storch, and if he had been five feet to the left...........I would have had no problem flying it off that road either, but the damage was too extensive for a 'bush' repair. Glad you are enjoying my random photos...now if I can just get a new phone lead and download the 300 or so recent ones in my phone !!#%*& ....................................
Guest Brett Campany Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Just let me get a beer, I'm going to sit through these photos mate, they're GOLD!!!
Tomo Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 That third pic on the third group down, whats with the back to front ROSS? how'd you do that?
Guest Maj Millard Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 The only thing I can come up with, is, it is a reflection of the gold Ross on my dk blue work shirt, onto the cabin window. A fluke.................we just went for a quick maintenance flight in the Bell 222 at Hamilton Is.
Relfy Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 It must really suck having your own strip looking out over the ocean with a mountain range behind all that. Great photos Maj, keep em coming!
Tomo Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 A fluke.................... Pretty cool though...!
Guest Maj Millard Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 Relfy, I'm assuming you are referring to the last photo.. Oh how I wish it were my own strip !!. It's actually Montpelier Airpark which is owned by Andrew Hicks (ex RAA board). It is situated on an old WW2 airfield which was referred to as Antil plains. There were three strips back then, and two still exist. The water you mention it the Ross River Dam which is the main water source for Townsville. It's often lower but is fairly full at the moment due last years rain. The mountain ranges are real, and we are only 10 minutes from the ocean and beaches after take off . The Dam by the way is the perfect wind indicator prior to landing......If I won the lottery the place would be mine the following day, as it is a great place to fly, and so close to town..............................................................................................
Relfy Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Maj, looks like a fantastic spot! I'm hoping you win lotto now so I can fly up and see 'your' strip. When I win lotto and buy the Island next to Toogoom nth of Hervey Bay, with it's own grass strip, you're free to drop in also.
