Guest terry Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 Hoping some one can help. I need a new crankcase for my 582. I thought I had one but it appears to be off a 532. At the moment the engine has been pulled down and the parts are spread around the floor so I need help now. Thanks Regards Terry you could also ring me on 0412922992
pudestcon Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Did you get your crankcase Terry? If so, where from and how much if I can be so bold? Pud
Guest terry Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Hi Pud, I did manage to find one the next day. I put feelers out everywhere I could think of and it paid off. Just to fill you in as to where I'm up to with my rebuild, I'm done, every nut, bolt, washer, screw, strap, pin, clip, bracket, cloth, lead, spacer, I'm done. Next up up and away and I can't wait. I'm very busy at the moment with work so it will be a week or two before our first flight.
pudestcon Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Goodonya Terry, I picked my bottom end up from the workshop today - work is paid for and organised by the guy restoring the aircraft. The deal is I purchase the aircraft in fully restored condition. Problem is I have serious misgivings about this engine. Check out the welded repairs to the crankcase in these photos. What do you think? Pud
Guest terry Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Pud, don't even consider accepting something like that on your plane. Sometimes it's better to wait for the right piece to turn up. The crankcase I have is from a 532 but can be ajusted to a 582 but I wasn't happy and my lame was in two minds as well so we decided to wait and go looking for one off a 582. We found one the next day and I paid 500.00 for it. I could have haggled but I had the motor totally apart on the floor so was in a hurry. You could get one cheaper I'm sure. It also needs to be in good condition with little wear. Don't bother asking bert flood for a price, you will die laughing. Regards Terry
pudestcon Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 G'dat Terry, Yeh I hear what you are saying. I just wanted some other feedback so I could be sure it's not just me being unreasonable. I do have another crankcase that is in fair condition although one of the bearing housings has a slight score on it. Check the photos out below Cheers, Pud
Methusala Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Hey Pud, I have just rebuilt a 582 and the cases looked like new! I'm just an amateur aviator but I don't realy like the look of your cases. best to be sure! Don
Guest terry Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Hi Pud, I'm of the apinion that their not good enough either, I think others might have more expertise than me on this one. Ask around the traps particularly people that work on 582's. I'm thinking of that fellow in Q'land has a good reputation. I can't think of his name right now but it will come to me. Terry
pudestcon Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Thanks for the feedback guys, I had the discussion this morning with the guy paying for the engine overhaul, gave him my opinion in no uncertain terms and he agreed the crankcase is not satisfactory and will be changed. Cheers, Pud
pudestcon Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 I'm thinking of that fellow in Q'land has a good reputation. I can't think of his name right now but it will come to me. Terry You probably thinking of maj millard Terry, He certainly seems to know what he is talking about and has some thought provoking posts of a high quality. Pud
Methusala Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 G'day Again, These engines, I believe are fantastically designed to provide the kind of reliability that they do. But they are not too complex when you come to strip them down and reassemble them. Just 2 strokes. There are available on dvd good guides to this process and as long as you are careful and conservative then you can do it. The best thing is to replace the rings and the con rod small end bearings and the gaskets. The centre section of the engine which contains the rotary valve and water pump may be in good enough condition to not need overhaul. Of course the bores must be checked for wear and scoring and be honed to provide new metal for the rings to bed into. Pistons also need to be looked at carefully. If you are competent with hand skills then you can do it. Don
pudestcon Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Methusala, Thanks for that - I'll check out the dvds (are they the ones off the Rotax site?) when I get some time as I'm not that good with mechanice so need to brush up some skills, even if it is only for maintenance. Terry, Would love to see some photos if you can post them here. Pud
pudestcon Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 I sure will as soon as I get the chance.Terry How are you going with your Thruster Terry? Have you flown it yet and how does it handle, where are those photos you promised? ;) I'm still on the lookout for a used but good condition crankcase for my Rotax 582 so if you get wind of one then I'd sure like to know about it please. Cheers, Pud
Guest terry Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Hi Pud, I've been very busy lately so haven't had the chance. I bought a property to fly from and have been putting it in order and rented out the house. I'm trying to get approval for a hanger which I already have. Some issues with council. the photos will come soon. Hopefully on first flight very soon.
