Guest scooter Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Hi Ian Thanks for the welcome. The flying dream has been with me for a few years now and in the past two i have flown a super dimona and a robinson r44 both trial flights.I am 48 now and have decided to do it.Living in mackay QLD i will need to travel to a training school, preferably one with the aircraft i intend to own.I like the look of three aircraft, the martin3. foxbat. and the pipistrel virus.Could you please steer me in the right direction toget me started. Thanks Scooter
Spin Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 :welcome:Scooter, nice part of the world you're from. Other's may disagree, but I wouldn't get too hung up on the type of aircraft at this stage, find a school and more importantly an instructor you can get along with and enjoy your training. There is no harm and plenty of good from having a slightly wider experience base, it is easy enough to convert to something else later on. More importantly, you may find that what you initially liked the look of isn't as attractive once you have had a little experience. Cheers Carl PS Foxbat:thumb_up:
Admin Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 The Foxbat is a great aircraft and is very popular with many recreational aviators and training schools what's more it has a distributor that is respected and trusted which is just as important as the aircraft itself. I don't know the agent for the Martin3 but that is also a very nice looking, well spec'd and reasonably priced aircraft as well. Would be interesting and fun to fly which is what recreational aviation is all about. At the end of the day it will come down to the aircraft that best suits your needs and your needs will change as you progress through your training, talk to other pilots and aircraft owners (especially here on this site) as each one is different. I personally would go through your training first and it doesn't matter what aircraft you train in as each one is different and fly differently and having a broader range of experience in different aircraft can only help you in your flying skills. Welcome to the site and enjoy the great fun that you are about to embark on - and always feel that you can ask any question, any question at all, right here on Recreational Flying.
Guest Walter Buschor Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Hi scooter, Good to hear from you and you'll have a great time ahead. Regarding he planes you suggested they are all great as Ian said. I do agree with Ian that the choice of plane should not be rushed into. There are so many things to consider like what sort of flying are you planning to do,local or long distance, what sort of strips are you planning to land on . Is the plane in a hangar - I hope so - . The first thing before buying is to find hangar space as there is nothing worse than having to leave it outside. Then there is the fact that all planes are different to fly - they're all the same yet all different - a bit like with cars. As you go through your training try to have a go in more than one and you get a better idea. So I suggest not to rush buying a plane and simply enjoy the learning . It's a wonderful time. fly safe Walter
Guest scooter Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 thanks for the advice Walter,i found you have schools in gympie, can you recomend any instructors. thanks scott
Guest Walter Buschor Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Hi Scott, There are two Flying schools at Gympie. Unfortunately I don't know what they call themselfs but one operates the Sportstar (2x) and Jennifer is the instructor . The other one flies a Tecnam and Brett is the instructor. The first one is located in the "demountable" at the entrance to the airfield. Jennifer lives in the house next to the premises. The other one is located in the biggest hangar. Just drop in and introduce yourself. They would love to hear from you. If I was you I would " hang " around on a weekend as there will be some students " circuit bashing " and they are a great scource if info and feedback. They will only be too pleased to share their exitement with you! I'm shure I'll bump into you sometime and in the meantime " best of luck " . It's exiting times for you ! Walter
