PaulN Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Hi gang, I woke early this morning (unusual for me) peeked out the window and got this irresistable urge, call of the blue yonder if you like ... "Get on up here". So at 0630 me a the little CT taxied into the sunrise. What a splendid morning for a quick fly around. Well at least I told Gwen it would be quick but once up there it's hard to come back down, esp on mornings like this. Basically just a fly around our local area taking in the views and check-flying a few minor adjustments in calm conditions ... well that's my excuse. Hope you enjoy the pics over top YCOM. Paul
slartibartfast Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Paul, I was wondering... That last shot seems to show an RPT (or something biggish) coming in on 18, but according to this program I wrote which shows me all the obs from YCOM constantly refreshing on my desktop, it was NE to N all morning. Que pasa? Which did you use? I ask to further my training.
PaulN Posted January 3, 2007 Author Posted January 3, 2007 Nice shot of the Jab on your Obs page ;) .That was the bank plane Ross. I heard his inbound call for a STA and timed my fly-over to catch this shot. You're right, the winds were NNE this morning but not much in it. I did two landings, a T&G on 18 to practise a downwind approach and the other on 36 but with -12 flaps and a very long powered "flare" just 10ft AGL to put down near the taxi way, again just for honing technique. What a perfect morning it was    . Paul
slartibartfast Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Ah - fairy snuff. I should have blocked out the Jab before posting. It's there for my pleasure only. Thanks again for sending it to me. I forgot to ask Adrian if I can use it as my avatar - so I haven't yet. I also asked the question to make sure my prog is reporting correctly (and the BoM, and the AWS). We are spoiled having more than 2km of runway to play with Ross
PaulN Posted January 3, 2007 Author Posted January 3, 2007 Good morning Ross, Nuther nice flight this morning. Off at 0630 back at 0745. Up to YADY for T&G, up over Eucumbene, down to YJIN for another T&G on 12 but aborted cos of roos grazing on the strip, so went around then low over pass at 50ft just for the fun of scattering them, then back to YCOM. Beautiful morning, still air but breeze up for landing around 15kt NE. This is the life. :) :) :) Pity you can't do your training in 3527 early AM rather than wait for the wind to come up in the PM. Adrian says you might be at Kennedy on Sun for the club meet. I plan to fly in shortly after midday after church so may catch up with you there. Paul
slartibartfast Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Awesome Paul. Great photo - looks like there's a little more water in Eucumbene. You've made me think. If I can be back on the ground by 8:00 I can still get to work by 30. Not too late. Could be the go. I'm still hoping it will be good tonight. Almost all my training so far has been turbulent. At least when I have smooth air my control is good. Sunday could be a goer - see you there. Ross
PaulN Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 Early AM training and back to work by 0930? Why not? You just have to get used to driving out of ACT around 0445 and dodge the roos en route :;)4: . But hey, no sacrifice is too great for flying ;) . Paul
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Great shots (again) Paul. Thanks for sharing :) Looked like a fantastic morning up there. What was your AGL in the second pic? :;)2: Looks awesome! Hopefully I can get up there on Saturday morning myself and have a fly around. PS I think the a/c you have in that shot below is a Death Pencil (Metro).

But hey, no sacrifice is too great for flying ;) .Paul Well I went to Cooma this evening because all looked great, but the sea breeze made it after all and pushed the cross-wind to 20 knots. I missed out again! So I have decided that mornings are a better bet and I'm making the trek again in the morning. In fact I'd better get to bed now so I'll be able to see the roos. Aiming for 4:00am depart to be airborne by 5:30. See you there maybe. Oh - and thanks for making me think about it. Great idea!
PaulN Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 What was your AGL in the second pic? :;)2: Looks awesome! About 4000 AGL, low cloud. Hopefully I can get up there on Saturday morning myself and have a fly around. Would be good to catch up. Keep us informed if you think you'll make it. Weather permitting our club (Snowy River Aviators) is having a meet at the Adaminaby airstrip on Sunday. I hope to fly in just after midday, after church in Jindabyne. PS I think the a/c you have in that shot below is a Death Pencil (Metro). Metro, yes. Death Pencil?? Cheers, Paul
PaulN Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 Aiming for 4:00am depart to be airborne by 5:30. See you there maybe. 1.5 hours from home in ACT to take-off on 18 ... just how fast do you drive??? Adrian will be impressed at the dawn start, don't tell him it was my idea :ah_oh:, but I know he likes early AM flying too. It must be sooooo frustrating driving all that way and having to abort . Not sure I'll be there early tomorrow. Had a late night tonight and a full day with visitors tomorrow. Maybe Sunday at YADY. Paul
slartibartfast Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I live in the southern suburbs, so half-way there already. I'm allowing for a 90kmh limit on this trip coz the 'roos will be everywhere. Sunday is looking like a no-fly the way the weather is shaping up, that's why I'm keen to go straight back now. Better get that coffee and hit the road. The sky beckons....
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Ha ha Metro = death pencil, yes. I will come up with some other aircraft nicknames shortly... Again, fantastic pics. :) I will try 4,000ft tomorrow (given some cloud).
crazy diamond Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Although totally unrelated to the main topic other nicknames for the Metro have included the San Antonio Sewer Pipe, Swearingen Sweat Pencil (I would imagine for those flying in Darwin etc with little or no working a/c in the aircraft), there are numerous others. I think the only other aeroplance that is more commonly referred to by it's nickname would be the Ted Smith or Piper Deathstar otherwise referred to by it's manufactured name of "Aerostar".
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Dash 8= Smash 8 Twin Otter=Twotter BAE146-Hairdryer. There are a few more i'm sure Just came back from flying out at The Oaks. What a beaut day it was too!!!! :)
crazy diamond Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 G'day Darren sorry I didn't get down there, was at BK with some mates for the day instead :-( How was the oaks flying? I think I'll start another thread for aircraft nicknames, do you know what the BAe stands for? "Bring another engine!!", I also think the Aerostar copped Scareostar among other things...
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Ha ha. Good idea mate! It was good. Like glass at around 3,000-4,000ft. Just a little bumpy passing through from 1,000ft to ground but nothing too bad. Had a great day there anyway. We were waiting to meet a few of you guys from here but ended up leaving at about 1430 anyway. There's always next weekend or the weekend after or...Hope you had a good day at YSBK anyway! :)
