Tomo Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 I'm half looking at purchasing one of these... (second hand because discontinued product). Question I'm asking is: It is currently in America, so has US data etc... on it, how hard is it to put Aussie data into it? How much would it cost? Can you download all the stuff from somewhere? Probably some pretty simple questions, but I haven't had much to do with GPS's yet. What do you think of the Garmin III yourself? I've heard some really positive stuff about them whoever I talk to who has one... so that is why I'm looking, and the price is Ok at present. Thanks
dunlopdangler Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Excellent little unit Tomo, You can pick these up fairly cheaply over the internet and sometimes on Ebay...You can download all the australian data with a data link cable off your PC from Garmin site. I have had one of these little gems for over a decade and find it a great back regardless of what I am flying. :) visit the garmin site for one off costings or I get Range avionics at Toowoomba to do the download occassionly for about $90.00
Tomo Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 Yep, well you were the inspiration to getting one of them... after looking at yours the other day, I liked it rather! I ended up buying this one, worked out to $200 incl P/H from Canada, in great nick, with power, pc leads, manuals... the works. Can't wait for it to turn up now... and have a fiddle! Sounds good about the download... It's not as much as I afeared it would be. I'm set now, bought me a headset, EPIRB, and GPS yesterday... all I need now is an aircraft!
leestanley Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Hi Tomo, How have you gone with your GPS III - did the aussie maps download work well? are you happy withe the unit? Cheers, Lee.
Tomo Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 G'day Lee, Yes, well I'm happy with the unit itself, works great. But, I was unable to get any Aussie data on it, took it to the pro's, and they said it ain't possible because garmin discontinued making software for them. So, that's a shame... If anyone knows of a way out it would be good, but at this stage it pretty much is only good for ground speed, and current position way points. But the machine it self works great!
Guest Howard Hughes Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I'm set now, bought me a headset, EPIRB, and GPS yesterday... all I need now is an aircraft! Are you planning on getting lost? Nice choice, always wanted a III pilot, but don't really have the need for one!
Tomo Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Are you planning on getting lost? I guy lent me his aircraft the other day to take for a flight to see what I thought of it, just before I started up, he asked, "are you going to crash it?". Do you think I'd tell him if I was?? ;)
skeptic36 Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I guy lent me his aircraft the other day to take for a flight to see what I thought of it, just before I started up, he asked, "are you going to crash it?". Do you think I'd tell him if I was?? ;) Well I've always thought you where the most honest bloke on these forums I dunno what to think now
Tomo Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Well I've always thought you where the most honest bloke on these forums I dunno what to think now Sorry to disappoint Skeptic, no one is perfect sadly.... :black_eye: And I didn't crash it - and I had a completely awesome time in it! But I don't like being arrogant - expect the unexpected! That's why I didn't answer his question....... Anyway, sorry for the sermon, I get carried away
Guest Howard Hughes Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 guy lent me his aircraft the other day to take for a flight to see what I thought of it, just before I started up, he asked, "are you going to crash it?". Do you think I'd tell him if I was?? ;) Of course the correct answer would have been..."I'm not planning to!" That way it is left open just in case...;)
Tomo Posted May 7, 2010 Author Posted May 7, 2010 Of course the correct answer would have been..."I'm not planning to!" That way it is left open just in case...;) It takes a clever one to think up 'theoretically' correct answers though... And me no clever in dat department.

Tomo Posted May 7, 2010 Author Posted May 7, 2010 Tomo I have one as my spare GPS. You know you can enter user waypoints don't you? Yeah, that's about all I can do - Haven't had the need for it yet though.
