Guest Unregistered Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 hey guys, sorry for the post in the wrong place, im going to register soon :P. here is what im thinking, i have about 23 hours up in ga, only need me gfpt, i only want flying for rec not for a job, the schools ive looked at ultralight is $175 per hour for a jabiru and a piper warrior 2 is $220 per hour, is it worth both planes are great, is it worth staying in ga or will prices get too high for rec? thanks heaps :P
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Chris, I can safely say at The Oaks (at both Daves and SRFC) the prices are safely half of what they are GA. Instruction with Daves is $125 per hr, hire (wet) $95 per hour. These are all aircraft. GA is now $220 per hr for a Tecnam out of Bankstown!!!! Arthur may want to post his prices too or maybe he would prefer a PM. I left the GA scene due to the cost. I guess it also depends on where you learn to fly.
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Too right. A case of location location again ;)
Guest AusDarren Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 for most of us the $$ constrain what is possible, I learned GA though I really don't think a 152 is that much different to today's LSA's. And many of the GA fleet here in Aus are looking very tired. I can (& do) Aspire to own my own LSA. I see it as an achievable goal. and as much as I'd love to buy a brand new Piper or Cessna, its just not realistically achievable. and if I did I'd never afford the maintenance. So right at the top of my list is a used LSA55 Jabiru. Though Next December I plan to take the family on a tour around Tassie in a Bonanza.. but thats another story! Regards, AusDarren
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 This is why Recreational Aviation does make dreams come true! ;)
Guest AusDarren Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I actually worked out how far it was to fly from Bundaberg to Oshkosh. and the answer.. 14000 nm there abouts.. the longest stretch over water is between Greenland and the Canadian coast you wouldn't even need ferry tanks. Now there is a trip.. not without a lot of logistical preparation. but a trip like that could be done As far as Brittan there isn't even much over water required. Just me dreaming!!
Guest Crezzi Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 A guy I know flew a trike here from the UK - he estimated that he was over water for a third of the total distance as ATC in a lot of the countries routed him via airways (albeit at a much lower altitude). He also reckoned the must fun part of the trip was flying in Aus. Cheers John
Guest AusDarren Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Man its a long way in a trike! how long did he take to do the trip? any problems with local officials? I take my hat off to that sort of adventurer. Regards, AusDarren
Admin Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 There were 2 guys that flew a plastic fantastic (I won't say what kind for fear of retribution ;) ) from germany to Canada via England, Wales across Greenland and down into canada which would have to be one of the most boring trips http://www.flightdesign.com/index.php?all=en/all_news/2/this_news/1811 When i was buying a particular aircraft (again will not mention due to a potentially massive beat up) I asked the distributer if he wanted to fly it back from Germany to Australia with me and he said no way but what a trip it would have been - and he is a Singapore Airlines Capt Oh well I just might have to make do with flying my Gazelle across to tassie
Wilfred Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 There was the KR2 world tour Of course the aircraft was fitted with a Jabiru engine http://www.benseys.com/cgi-bin/subsite/wt/plan.asp
pylon500 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Boy, that thread filled up quick! :ah_oh: Anyhow, to answer Darrens reply, we at the Sysney Recreational Flyin Club, with out two LightWings, charge $115 per hour Dual/Wet, $100 per hour Solo/Wet, reduced for cross countries over 2 hour duration (but I can't remember how much!). I think our club membership is about $96 per annum. Presently we only have three active instructors with a couple more almost finished their training, Gee, I might get to fly my own airplane a bit more ;) For bookings ring; 0425 251 939. Arthur.
Guest Crezzi Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 IIRC think the UK to Aus trike flight I mentioned took 2 - 2.5 months months (he wasn't aiming to beat the record which is still an unbeliveable 49 days AFAIK) I'm sure he had all the usual problems with officaldom - its expected. I did 8 border crossings on my last expedition & every one turned into a drama (all for different reasons). Count your blessings flying in such a large country ! Cheers John
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Yes I remember the English chap on the trike. Was a doco about it. Poor bugger had trouble getting clearance in some Russian country I believe after all that effort Them's the brakes! Arthur, thanks for the info. See you tomorrow! I think I have 3 pax for tomorrow! Line up here...
Guest Crezzi Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I think that was a different guy Darren - the doco was about Brian Miltons "Around the World in 80 days" ? Russia wouldn't let him through unescorted so he had to dump the co-pilot and fly with a state-approved navigator in the back. There also a doco about his attempt to fly the Atlantic non-stop in a trike. IIRC it was called "Chasing Ghosts" or something similar. Russia isn't on the "usual" UK-Aus flying route. Cheers John
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 John, You are quite right there. It was an interesting doco.If anyone knows where to get a copy I would be interested.
Guest Crezzi Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I check tonight if I still got a copy but it probably got deleted. It gets repeated fairly often on Foxtel A1 channel so if I notice when its on next .... ;) John
Guest David C Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Anyone remember the Sadler Vampire that flew UK to Bankstown some years ago ? . Dave
Guest Fred Bear Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I dare say PYLON (Arthur) may know some more about this.
