The passing of a Fine Pilot - Vale Doug Elliot

I just got the news that my CFI back at the Warren Hills Gliding Club, in Salisbury Rhodesia died on the 18 Jan 10 in UK.

Doug Elliot was the man who sent me first solo in a Blanik L13, after sitting patiently in the back putting up with all my crap landings and abysmal thermal work. Even now, some 18 years later, I still hear Doug's quiet voice in my ear when I am flying.

I still remember standing in the Pub after a full day of flying, when he told us how he had spun a Tiger Moth in the ground from 200', and stepped out through the side of the cockpit, through a hole in the fabric. Later that year , on an away trip to another airfield, I heard the story from someone else, who had been on the ground at the time.

Doug flew just about anything with wings, and admitted to over 10 000 hours on B707's.

Vale Doug. You will always be remembered.

Stephan Ellis

Ex Warren Hills Gliding Club / Mashonaland Flying Club.
