Bubbleboy Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 So are the gear legs actually made of timber?...............Cool Yes they are made of Spruce. Has a straight through axle held with bungees. Its a copy of the Jenny gear. Scotty
old man emu Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Thanks Mark....I am being told that I was supposed to have cut the sharp tabs off the end of the thimble before swaging it.Scotty Pretty impossible to cut that cable and not have some uneven strands. Just to prevent sticking a strand into your fingers, why don't you put a blob of hot glue onto the cut end of the cable? OME

Bubbleboy Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 There is a hell of a lot of work in this wooden undercarriage! Nearly finished the metal fittings and had an attempt at TIG welding the front rudder pedals. Im not happy with the way they turned out so am going to remake them. Need more filler rod and less heat on the thin tube. Although they would be fine they look like a dogs breakfast. 2
Bubbleboy Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 The end of this undercarriage is so close to the end I can smell it! Made and fitted the spreader bars today. What blows me away more than anything, and I have no idea how I did it but this axle and legs have remained straight and level right to the end! More luck than good management I believe! Just a couple of fittings to cut and make the cables and all done. Will shape the legs once its on its feet! Scotty 1
Methusala Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I would guess that the zinc coated ones would be for galvanised wire. The copper against the zinc (galvanising) would make for great electrolytic corrosion. Don
Bubbleboy Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 Hi Don...now you have me doubting myself! I thought plain copper on Gal cable and plated on stainless cable? Let me study my manual again... Scotty
Bubbleboy Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 30th March 2014 and she is standing on her own 3 feet for the first time! Scotty 5 4
Old Koreelah Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Wow Scotty, you've got an aeroplane in your back yard! 1
Pilot Pete Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Its funny how us aviation enthusiasts can look at something that looks like an overgrown balsa model or in the case of a tube frame a mechano kit and call it a thing of beauty and craftsmanship, and yet when most of us show our wives/girlfriends/partners, all they see is a jumble of sticks and steel. I wont tell you what I say when my missus asks me how she looks after an hour of make up and hair do. PS..... my apologies to all those wonderful women out there, especially my wife as this post was sent in jest. 1 1 1
Bubbleboy Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Hi Pete...yes I agree. While the fuselage was upside down and I had the jig attached to build the gear my wife said it looked like a cubby house! Scotty
Bubbleboy Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 Made and installed the undercarriage tension cables today. Nicopress swage fittings and turnbuckles! 3
old man emu Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Very nice work. Just one question: Why didn't you varnish the wood before assembly? You'll have unprotected wood under your metal fittings. OME
Bubbleboy Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 Very nice work.Just one question: Why didn't you varnish the wood before assembly? You'll have unprotected wood under your metal fittings. OME Mark...this is no where near final assembly! I need to shape the gear legs yet and do a final sand before final assembly. Scotty
Gnarly Gnu Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Nice bungee suspension! C'mon, show us the welding.... 1
Pilot Pete Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Where did you get those chain link type fittings from? Looking like you are making progress.
David Isaac Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Its looking real good Scotty, well done, I must make the effort to drop in next time I am up your way. 1
Bubbleboy Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 GG...the welding is coming along nicely! Bought a TIG/MMA combo from Token tools and very happy with it! Pete...They are just links from a chain. You buy a section of 50 chain and a chain breaker tool. Pop the pins out of the chain and you get the individual links. Use clevis pins to join them how you need them. Scotty 1
Pilot Pete Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Cool...that brings me to another question, where do you get your clevis pins ?
Bubbleboy Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 Hi Pete...I got this lot through Ian's shop. You can get them from Aircraft Spruce in the USA as well. Just check prices first. Scotty
