There was a fatal hang glider crash at Forbes earlier today. I believe the Austrian chap was participating in some comp and has plummeted to his death from 4,500ft after his chute failed to open. He is currently being transferred to Sydney for a post mortem.More info to follow. Another sad day...051_crying.gif.fe5d15edcc60afab3cc76b2638e7acf3.gif

Man dies in hang gliding accident - Forbes

5 January 2007

A man involved in a hang gliding competition died after he crashed south of Forbes, in the state’s south-west, yesterday.

Between 1pm and 2:15pm about 80 participants were towed into the air from Forbes airport to commence a flight to the Lockhart area.

About 2:30pm another pilot witnessed the man, police believe to be a 44-year-old Austrian citizen, free falling to the ground.

He was detached from the glider but still flying in his pod.

The man’s parachute failed to activate and he fell about 4000 feet to the ground suffering fatal injuries.

Police believe the man to be a 44-year-old Austrian citizen.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
