G'day

Just wondering what my backup plan should be if my ASIC doesn't arrive by the time I'm due to leave for Broken Hill. The reason for my concern is my application only got sent off this week after the arrival of my pilots certificate and I have been told up to 6 weeks for the ASIC.

I'm a former employee for Adelaide Airport where, as an ASIC holder, I used to escort contractors around to work sites and would like to know if something similar could happen at Broken Hill.

Would it be beneficial in getting in touch with members from the Aero Club up there or is there a fellow rec pilot residing in Broken Hill with an ASIC which could help me out.

Cheers

Michael.

PS. There's going to be a couple of more threads in regards to refuelling at Waikerie and Broken Hill, how it all works etc. So stay tuned.

Ring RAAus and explain. They can do a letter which tells that you have applied and it's in process. This worked for a friend of mine.

My ASIC took only a week and a half through RA-Aus, so you may be in luck. CASA ones take forever.

I doubt you'll get checked, but you never know. There is no security gate. (make sure you don't taxi into the RPT only area, they may not take kindly to that!)

Technically someone with an ASIC there can't help you out as the runway itself is part of the secure area and you will be there on your own.

At Broken Hill, just call the refueler and he drives his truck over, pay cash or credit card. Or use the bowser if you have a carnet card, not sure which one.

I don't think there is fuel at Waikerie, but there is at Renmark. If there is no one there, they say there is a call-out fee. But when we went there, they just activated the bowser remotely and trusted us to put a cheque in the mail - no call-out to pay.

I used to call the refueller before I headed in and get them to escort me to and from the aircraft without many diffucultlies. As for while you are taking off and Landing you 'could' still be escorted as long as you are under the direct visual supervision of a ASIC holder.

I have never been cornered except in Mt Isa where the arrangement was 'disapprovingly' accepted by the operator as it was obvious that I was under supervision.

RAA only took nine days to send my ASIC card to me.

PS. The Mt Isa operator / manager is on the ball and WILL check for an ASIC card. One of the few that do.

Few people I have spoken to have flown across Australia with their ASIC, flying into RPT aerodromes and not one time were they checked. I got my ASIC through Aviation ID Australia and it took 1 week without the security check (I'm under 18). I sent my application into CASA for an ASIC before I tried AID and it took them 4 weeks to even process my application and then they sent it back saying it wasn't filled out correctly! 088_censored.gif.2b71e8da9d295ba8f94b998d0f2420b4.gif

RA-Aus shouldn't take that long so you should receive it soon!

Thanks all for your responses. So it's safe to say that I should get my ASIC through RA-Aus within the next fortnight, and if I don't get it by the time I leave, I should be ok anyway because this whole federal airport security setup is a fast.

Is that a good summary?

I thought it was more along the lines of a sick joke that makes money

I thought the problem was that it wasn't fast... :clown:

A farce though, maybe ;)

There is an unlocked access gate on the GA apron. Also there is a BP 24hrs self serve bowser there so fuel would be no problem.

Hi

I did a round trip from Vic through NSW, Qld, NT, SA and back home last year. The only place that asked for my ASIC was Alice Springs where the Feds do the security a little officiously, I thought. I mean, I ask you, how many 65 year old female terrorists do you know that would try to do their evil thing with an aeroplane of the same vintage?

I've been to Broken Hill twice in the last 6 months and no problems either time. Fueled up with BP carnet and received wonderful hospitality from the Aero Club so I would call them before you depart if your ASIC hasn't arrived. Make sure you secure your aircraft with a throttle or wheel lock.

Have a great time

Ooooh! Should have said I almost went to Olympic Dam on the way back from the Alice and they absolutely required prior permission and an ASIC - no exceptions. I ended up going to Maree (drums only) , instead.

Please note that Leigh Creek no longer sells fuel which makes it very hard for those with limited endurance planning on a trip to places like Birdsville from the south.

Keep the posts coming, I'm taking all this on board. This is my first trip away after obtaining my pilot's certificate a couple of weeks ago.

Also, I called Waikerie airfield yesterday, they don't have fuel at the moment but are getting some tanks put in and will have some in the coming months.

Cheers

After many years of ultralight flying, much of it x-country adventures, I really envy you the excitement of those very first ventures away!

There's just nothing quite like the 'tingle in the tummy' of heading out over the horizon for the first time.

Enjoy!

Wishing you many memorable adventures to come.

Hi all. Just letting you know my trip to Broken Hill was awesome. No drama's at the airport (except everytime I went to land there was a REX aircraft departing), no problems with fuel and as my ASIC hadn't arrived, no problems there either.

But I have some news, my ASIC arrived today so now I have yet another expensive piece of plastic in my wallet. I'm flying to Sydney on Sunday with the family (with QANTAS), you reckon having the ASIC would help in getting myself and the kids into the cockpit?? Can only try I guess.

Cheers

Michael.
