Guest ozzie Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 A Tsunami warning has been issued for NSW and Queensland after an large undersea quake off Chile. Might pay to turn on the radio if you live near the coast.
winsor68 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Thanks Ozzie... (now that I have jumped back into my skin) It seems more from about Gladstone to Sydney. Take care people... you can never be too careful.
Tomo Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 put heaps of fuel in the plane and go flying for the next few days.... one way to stay above it! Hope nothing to serious will develop for you coastalites...
Vorticity Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Tomo, if this thing reaches you than we in Brisbane are screwed!:yuk:
Tomo Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Tomo, if this thing reaches you than we in Brisbane are screwed!:yuk: I'd second that.... You may as well say the whole eastern side of Aus would be screwed if we got it out here!
Guest ozzie Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 It is good to see the authorities actually paying attention now to these sort of things. You never know with underwater earthquakes. we may become complacent over the next few years of warnings that come to little especially when the source is on the other side of the world. But if a big slip happened on the west coast of NZ it could very well have a different outcome with very little time to react.
Spin Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Tsunami prediction seems to be a fairly inexact science, despite the network of wave buoys etc available too the boffins, they know its coming but don't seem able to make a call on the potential size of waves. I just hope that people don't get too complacent after the last few events being relative fizzers on our coast. Must say, the photos of people playing with their kids in the shallows or paddling pools this morning, make my blood run cold after seeing the video footage of the '04 Boxing Day event. By the time they wake up to the fact that the sea is draining out of the bay, it's too late to make a run for it.
winsor68 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 When I saw Ozzie's post last night I went straight to the BOM page... it apparently was not too much of a worry in for north Qld but I still woke up early and checked before the predicted arrival time... We have had buckets of rain for weeks, a massive king tide this morning (6.6meters) and then a Tsunami warning... It takes very little to flood Mackay. Just a 1 meter wave would have flooded us today... Yesterday as I drove to work the water in the drainage ditch near the airport which is a block away from my house was just about lapping the road... and this was 4 blocks from the ocean.... and this was before the king tide. All day at work I was looking over the airport and imagining a big wave coming and thinking "If it did where would I go?"... worked out my best bet is into the roof of the terminal... lol Would just like to say again thanks for the heads up Ozzie... Most people were completely unaware of the warning today. If it had been a big one you could well have saved some lives.
Guest ozzie Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 The nth Queensland coast is resonably protected from Tsunamis by the Great Barrier Reef. It is like a fence it will break down the main force and slow down the wave. Where the danger lies is in the surge and unpredictible movement of the surge and rapid height increase of the water. I lived in the area for quiet a while and went through a couple of cyclones that had 1mtr plus surges. amazing just how far inland it can go. top it off with a king tide and the amount of rain that can fall in a short period of time and you have big problems.Other areas along the east coast are not as well protected but if you look a map that show the underwater topography you will see many "mountain ranges" to the nth and east of New Zealand that will help protect us by redirecting and dissipating most of the energy from a Tsunami whose sourse is in the region of Sth America. Our main danger is one being generated in the New Zealand area. There will be very litlle time before it arrives there is nothing that will dissipate it's force. We have already experienced one but it was long before we were living here but you can still find evidence of it's effect especialy on the central coast area of NSW. The Somersby area is region. It is around 1500ft above sea level but the area is covered in sand and rocks that originally came from the Tasman Sea. It is belived to have been caused by a huge land slip on the south island. That is some amazing amount of energy that can carry material so high above sea level.Ozzie
dazza 38 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I read the Gold Coast news paper today, it had a photo of people standing on the beach waiting for it (clowns) .You would think people would get away from the beach.Luckily for them nothing eventuated.
Guest Sharp End Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Yep, it was a non-event... THIS time. On Moreton Bay, it was flat as a tack but the morning's high tide was HIGH and we got inundated with rubber neckers driving down to Cleveland Point for a squizz... :raise_eyebrow:
