Guest jabirusk Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Hi all. I operate a Jabiru SK out of a small grass strip about 1 hour's drive south of Auckland, NZ. I arrived from sunny South Africa about 18 months ago, brought my Jabiru in a container. Having had a recent in-flight engine failure on my 2200 85hp engine, I am looking at better cost options as compared to a new one. The motor is shot. Conrod blew right through the cranckase and messed up a whole lot of stuff inside. :baldy:They say to rebuild it will not be cost effective. Basically I can't afford the Aus$13 500 offered by the factory for a new one so am looking for a factory rebuilt one instead. :baldy:
dazza 38 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Sorry i cant help you with your engine problems, but i would like to welcome you, so WELCOME mate.
gwrdmr Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Hi folks, I have just registered. Potted history, I am approaching 60, started to learn to fly in my 20's when work & kids interupted. Didn't think it would take 30 years to come back. I have just achieved RA-Aus Restricted flying out of Boonah, Tecnam Golf & Echo. Just loving it. Pity about those missing 30 years. Aim is now to break out of the 25nm circle.
Guest Decca Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Welcome Well welcome to both jabirusk & gwrdmr. Sorry to hear about the failure, jab, fatal for the engine. Have jabiru quoted for a reconditioned one? Regards, Decca.
facthunter Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 rebuild. The factory rebuild is very thorough. Lots of new bits. Send yours back . they might feel sorry for you. In any case, they might find why it blew. Nev
Guest jabirusk Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Well welcome to both jabirusk & gwrdmr.Sorry to hear about the failure, jab, fatal for the engine. Have jabiru quoted for a reconditioned one? Regards, Decca. One would think the factory would want to know the reason for all major mechanical failures but clearly this appears to not be the case. I offered, through the new NZ agent, for Jab Aus to tear it down to find the cause, and ask for a reconditioned engine. To both they replied: "thanks, but no thanks." They apparently 'don't supply factory recons outside Australia' and declined to say why.

facthunter Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 move on. Give it a try Jabirusk. the parts that are included in the rebuild are at cost + prices. great value for money. Nothing ventured , nothing gained. Good support from the manufacturer... Nev
Guest Kevin the Penniless Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 How many hours on the engine when it blew up? Any ideas why it blew up? I only have 30 hours on my new J170 so I'm figuring it will outlast me!
Guest jabirusk Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 This was one of the older motors when Jabiru were in the serious developmental phase. At around 150hrs, the steel conrods and bigger heads were fitted. Then at about 320hrs, I had an EFATO at 1000ft. Dropped a valve and messed up some parts inside. A total rebuild later (new pistons, rings bearings, a new head) and at 90hrs after that, a failed conrod ended my flying once more, this time wrecking the engine beyond economical repair. It punched a hole right on the cranckase join line so even if I wanted to 'fix it,' I would need a new shell. Since I've been plagued by problems, I am now concentrating on a factory rebuilt one or if that doesn't work out, a new engine. Need to save up - will take a while.
