Guest Sharp End Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Maj, long final and short final are not two finals. If that were the case, mid downwind and late downwind would be two downwinds. The reason "finals" is a military term is because due to oval circuits, the combined base and final turns were joined into one leg known as "finals." During a straight-in approach such as an ILS or a PAR, after passing the outer and middle markers, if asked by air traffic control the pilot would say they were "on final."

Guest Maj Millard Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Sharpend, If i'm in the pattern, and don't have traffic spotted, yes it does matter whether he is on long final, or short final. Some folks call long final 3 NM out, or more. Short final to me is just outside the fence, or even over it. In that case I do need to know wether he is on a 'long final', or if he is about to touch down. It may certainly help me make my next decision, either to extend my downwind, or not. And mid downwind, and late downwind are also different, for the same reason. We are not flying military jets here, nor do many ULs fly ILS or PAR approaches. We often find ourselves these days with a mix of aircraft that have different speeds, and differing degees of visability. For that reason alone we need to stay ready to be somewhat flexable in our decision making in the pattern. Secondly, it might add a word to the RT, but I always call turning (base/final/etc) and try to make the call during or immediately before the turn (where possible, of course - aviate first - if I've finished the turn before I can make the call then it's just base/final/etc). Reason? Anyone hearing my call and then trying to sight me has a much better chance of seeing me if the wings are banked.

And it seems to be really prevalent in pilots operating into CTAF®'s......must be transmitted from RPT and turbine CHTR to PPL's by VHF?? Must ask my DAME if that's possible. happy days,
Relfy Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Am i the only one here who cannot definitively recall what i say? I know that my CFI says finals and the other instructor says final. I'll take note of it and get back to ya'all. Maj seems to be on the money though.
shags_j Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 That actualyl goes against the regs Destiny. One of the required calls is the final call. I would use it regardless of which strip I was landing at.
