$50 for something aviation related is a fantastic price.

if they started to rewrite thr regs so every thing was straight forward do you realise how long they would take. still waitng after 11 years for that other stuff. plus why would they want to do themselves out of a life long career of constantly reworking what we have, they prefer this weird red tape system that only they can under stand. My grandfather had a saying for boofheads like CASA, 'As useless as tits on a bull'.

So, for a free banana and a bag of peanuts, name all the different titles that our aviation controlling body has operated under since 1975. added bomus points if you can list all the CEO names in correct order.

As long as it's not bent, and all the chocolate is still on them. ;)

Views from Lee Ungermann

I pointed [email protected] at this discussion and got a reply from Lee Ungermann with his views:

Thanks for the email, to answer your question you have to understand firstly that recreational hours in a 3 axis or Group A aircraft do count one for one towards your PPL. Dave [Forsyth, my CFI] is in fact correct by stating that minimum hours for conversion can be quite small, as always, it is quite dependent upon your competency to operate the GA aircraft in question. Let's just say for instance that you do your RA certificate under a GA/RA dual school and then wish to go on to GA. You will need to have done your GA theory (Some Dual Schools use this as the standard they uphold for RA as well) and then you have to be comfortable and competent in the GA aircraft (Could be a GA registered Jabiru or Tecnam for instance, in which case minimal crossover) and have completed all elements in the Day VFR syllabus for PPL which does include some Instrument time. The RA certificate is taken from the Day VFR syllabus so you will find that you have already covered 95% of the syllabus under RA so you just have to finish off the rest GA. Where the confusion comes in is that many pure GA schools do not understand the level of RA instruction and conversions can be seen as a money spinner, however if the RA pilot is not up to the flying standard required or has trouble adapting to the aircraft then you could expect to have to do more time. Of course you will need a Class 2 medical.

There are a lot of conditions in this explanation, but to put it simply, there are a few extra things that that are required for the GA licence, none which are insurmountable. If you are being quoted excessive hours for your conversion, then I would vote with my feet and have a look around. I always recommend that you go and see a GA/RA dual school as these are the guys that know the differences between the two standards and can get you on your way in GA with a lot less fuss, time effort and money. As always with all training , take a pro-active approach and manage your progress.

Most grossly exaggerated prices for conversions hours are, in my experience, from pure GA schools that are anti- RA-Aus, which is a pity as they are missing out big time on the RA conversion market, if they truly understood our standard they would be embracing the change just like the Dual schools. I hope this assists with answering your question, please feel free to post this on the Rec Forum.

Yours sincerely

He doesn't discuss the SPL or GFPT yay or nay thing, but that's CASA's bag, really. As discussed above, it doesn't seem neccesary. My CFI is also a CASA ATO and if he doesn't think it is needed, I would trust it isn't.So I guess the best thing to do is shop around and see who makes it easiest! The standard is the same everywhere; it's just how many paid hours the school wants to extract from you before allowing you an audience with the ATO...
