Guest rohayes Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 We are planning a trip flying trikes to Cape York in June and would like to land at Hicks Island but have had trouble finding any information about the airstrip there. I was hoping the vast collection of wisdom on these forums might be able to help. Thanks in advance. Bob
Deskpilot Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Hi Bob. I'd never heard of Hick Island so I went searching. First I looked on GoogleEarth. Not a lot to be seen as there's no low level imagery. Next was a general search on Google and I found that it is a privately leased island. Currently the lease appears to be up for sale at nearly $1mill. There are some vids on Utube but mainly about surviving in the bush. I've attached a couple photo's for your perusal.
Guest rohayes Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Cheers Doug, Thanks for the info. Only want to land on the island, not sure I want to buy it! Would be nice though...if my lotto financial plan ever matures! The island is only 2km off Cape Grenville, so an easy glide from the mainland. There are plenty of beaches as safe landing areas close by. We don't have to land there, but thought it might be a good thing to do while we are in the area. We do know that other islands around that area pick up their guests from charter planes that use the Hicks Island strip and then use boats. Thanks again. Bob
