  1. Yeah, at the moment I am glad I didn't rush in and waited. I think that it will take a little while to settle down, and there will be limited new investments. with the staff levels held down to suit. Think I read somewhere that the acceptance age for pilot training in the RAAF is 45, so I may look in that direction. Flying or even a load-master on a Herc has an appeal. Be interesting to see what happens to the international students after all this is over.
  2. Never knew about the golden caterpillar club, but dont think he qualifies as the airplane wasn't disabled
  3. may have found who bought some of these, don't know who follows the military side of things but the USAF is going to private contractors for a lot of their training. and I found this bit in an article about Blue close air support buying some OV-10 Broncos "the company also recently bought a half dozen ex-Royal Australian Air Force PC-9 turboprop trainers. All of these aircraft are suitable for training personnel on the ground, such as JTACs, to call in airstrikes and otherwise coordinate with aerial assets. "
  4. And my flight school is closed... time to buy an RC plane and fly it from the backyard:roflmao:
  5. I was out flying yesterday, and about to book another lesson for next week, as long as work doesn't stop paying me - I'll keep flying.
  6. How often are you flying? this makes a big difference. I can only fly once every 2 weeks, its not enough at the circuit stage, as the first 30mins are wiped out getting re-familiar with the controls and inputs. I took a chance and added an additional lesson each week in... It blew my budget and wasn't sustainable. but I improved alot as I kept a feeling for the controls. I then cut that to a morning and afternoon flight every 2 weeks. (thats the mental limit I can take, and the max the Instructors would reccomend. its a necessary evil - normally they dont advise two sessions on the same day for circuits as its fatiging no matter the experience level) another thing is the more we experience, the harder we are on ourselves. i made a landing yesterday that was garbage... but would have been great 10 hours ago. its all competency, it was 12 months and 30 hours before I soloed
  7. edit: RPC not RPL
  8. Thanks for the offer, But I'm still a year at a guess from seriously contemplating it. I'm still going through training for my RPL, was only solo last month. And would still need to get a tail-wheel endorsement size wise Im just on 6ft and 85kg There is just something about the Corby that grabs my attention and imagination
  9. True, but it doesn't cost 10K to get a license to use the Boat... almost all of my family has a boat license, its a $300 one-off cost. Any tradie can purchase a boat on a whim and take it out the next weekend plus its seen as family and friend time - not a selfish activity like flying. I was raised in a family where we always had a boat in the front yard. the fuel bill for the 350 Chev was similar, the old 34ft fly-bridge cruiser was a liter per minute at full throttle when it had the twin 250? outboards
  10. the cost of storage is a huge factor. Im 28, by no means in a well paying industry (60k P.A.) but Id happily buy a 15k-30k for an older Jabiru or Corby (a man can dream) I could sell my Amarok and a motorcycle to pay for it (company car at the moment) self maintenance could make it reasonable to afford the upkeep. but I don't think I could take the cost to have it parked on the airfield. we are like boats now. where its not a matter of affording the boat, but the mooring fees. If they aren't being bought, why sell?
  11. any advantage to buying online? I assume I can get one at the gate
  12. deleted - already posted earlier
  13. Happened yesterday. the first solo was euphoric, interesting mix of nerves and being consciously calm - taking my time and checking everything as taught. the flight was serene. landed (with a slight bounce) and felt such a mixture of emotions and energy the second solo later in the day was more interesting... puncture in the Tyre as I taxied back to drop off the instructor. was able to get a second Jabiru out the hangar to do the solo part. can really pick up on the differences when you fly planes back to back then got a radio call from the instructor after my first touch and go - to reverse the circuit on downiwind as there had been a change of wind on the ground. nailed the landing, one of the best Ive done
  14. Yeah, I think I'm going to take my time and try to find what fits best. Been thinking of leaving the motorcycle trade for a while. But don't want to make the same mistake of losing a joy because its now associated with stress. I Don't think I'll apply till semester 2, which is in July. Examine all the options first instead of rushing in to things. I also want to complete my RPC first, to confirm I am able to stick with it and capable of passing the basics. I know its a drop in the ocean of knowledge required, but its a start
  15. Just very lazy, the curse of my generation. tend to lose the proper grammar and ignore spelling when it comes to the internet.
  16. anyone have experience or knows of the systems with studying through a university, recently been thinking of changing carreer paths (28yrs old). and looking at the possibility of studying to be a commercial pilot. While so far ive been self funding my RPC, I wouldnt be ablt to afford a PPL let alone a CPL that way. so thinking that a degree through a reputable uni may be the best way - and load up on a HECS/VET debt. very wary of the whole soar fiasco, and seen enough friends with useless degree's that dont qualify them fo anything so want toknow ill exit with a job prospect RMIT seemed to me to be the safest bet., as they have a QANTAS partnership But so little that I can actually find from a web page. For example the difference between an associate degree in aviation, and an degree of applied science in aviation. They offer both with the same outcomes listed
  17. Problem with these systems is no actual defined result. i.e. you are now able to work as the following. same problem with Uni courses... the course is so broad and there is no job guarantees at the end. it doesn't actually qualify you to do any work. I have friends who are psychology grads working as receptionists. (they don't meet the industry minimum standards) my brother in-law is a qualified paramedic... working as a computer programmer. (no jobs in the field) they provide an "education" not a career path Problem is that there is so much out there, and its all so undefined that I'd probably fall for it. If someone said do our course and at the end you can fly commercially, its all done in one place - I'd jump at it too. as for other incidents... I had a yellow foxbat a few hundred meters off my wing, while doing circuits at the airport I fly with the other day. no radio calls at all, not responding. despite being at circuit height...
  18. pfft loosing mirrors.... opening the passenger side rear door is just as effective and doesn't leave a risk of being taken for damages. I've heard a water pistol full of brake-fluid is good - but doesn't have that instant reaction besides, we all know motorcyclists make better pilots?
  19. I'm currently learning, and were taught, "brakes full and free" my understanding of this is that pull the lever to make sure there is pressure, and also ensure the brake lever isn't locked on. I land on a grass strip, so my thoughts would be to touch early, and get that stall warning buzzing. cant drop any further when already on the ground. The exception was if Id done a late touchdown. then Id go around
  20. LeMons racing provides some classic cars, especially team speedycop
  21. Thanks, re-reinforces what my instructors say about the pre-takeoff briefing being your plan and making the decisions then. so you don't have to think about it in the air and can focus on flying the plane
  22. Hope you don't mind me asking what happened? well before I imagined I'd actually be able to get into aviation. and if its something I could learn from, I thought it would be worth hearing
  23. Bring Out Another Thousand, I don't keep track of the $$$ Ive dropped into my Jet-ski's. currently have the stand-up in pieces tracing an electrical fault. But then I also don't keep track of my spending with flying lessons. I dropped 3K into it last month... and reckon Ive got about that to spend again before Ive got my RPC don't worry, its universal. some councils have fees on boat ramps, and don't get me started on the illogical regulations
  24. sniff, can we get back to talking about the plane
  25. Dont forget that they have 3-4 of everything (both sensors and the computers they feed to), just for this reason. and also have the ability to manually turn off specific sensors (like when refueling, they can shut off the probe side) as they like to call it, its fly by vote The Fighter Pilot Podcast has some really good episodes which discuss this.
