  1. Lucky we can't see the back 9. So, his wife is the only person who can beat him with a golf club.
  2. Congratulations Bec. Very exciting. Ross
  3. Hi Colin. It doesn't matter what (if anything) is in the file, just the presence of it makes Ozi double the resolution. In Windows, just right click a inside any folder, and choose New --> Text Document. Then just rename the file to hires.dat and copy it to the OziExplorerCE folder on your device. Or grab any existing small file and copy/rename it. I just did it on the 7" one I'm setting up for turboplanner. I'm now going to take it on a test run to Luskintyre tomorrow, just to make sure it's working properly .
  4. First - try connecting it to another PC. If it still complains, there's a problem with the device. If it doesn't, reinstall the USB driver on your PC.
  5. We're off with another month of great photos. The light is improving with the weather, so no excuses. Get out there and get snapping. There have been some great photos coming in, and each month one lucky member gets a 6 month subscription to Pacific Flyer Magazine. Philthy has excused himself from accepting the prize for awhile, so there's some hope for the rest of you (I'm ineligble because I organised the competition - damn it). Don't forget to have a high resolution version of your photo available for publication, and to send it to Angela at [email protected] when she announces the winners. Also remember that if you didn't take the picture, the person who did needs to give permission for publication. Good luck all. Scottw - I moved your post from the November thread, so you get to start off December.
  6. Nope - he's right. For US gallons, use 6 pounds per gallon. For Imperial gallons, use 7.2. So 100 US gallons weighs 600 pounds. 100 of our gallons would be 720 pounds. Remember 100 US gallons is 378 litres. I don't think any of us carry that much.
  7. Agreed. I've done 3 hours under the hood in the last few months, and I loved it. Especially recovering from unusual attitudes after sitting with my eyes closed while the instructor throws it around for a while to confuse my senses. I found there was no temptation to cheat, and no time either. I was too busy on the scan. It does take a lot of focus and attention. As soon as I was distracted, something got away from me - a few degrees in heading or a hundred feet of altitude. I found it very valuable. I would not be tempted to go IFR illegally because of the experience. That's one of those "bold pilot" things which will kill you sooner or later. I recommend some instrument time to all who haven't tried it. The hardest thing is to trust someone else's eyes to check for traffic. It seems weird to fly all the way to a circuit without looking outside.
  8. That's a woman.
  9. I always include the warning "If you throw up, we both die". I can't handle it.
  10. Good stuff Ray. Is that your S300T? My Mio is still readable in direct sunlight (and I get heaps) but could still do with some help. The 7" Chinese models look like they might suffer a bit too. These sunshades might be worth trying - There are lots on eBay for different models.
  11. Pretty much as Rob says Maj. I did do the direct track a few weeks ago because of the cloud on ground at Bowral, and there are places which are not too flash. Tracking over the Kangaroo Valley will maximise the options though. You do need to stay north of the Shoalhaven river ravines, so head for Bundadoon, Marulan South, then YGLB. You have the Nowra military airspace to worry about too. The Sydney VNC is a must.
  12. Here's a shot of it flying.
  13. No worries Ferris. Got to look after the Mallee mob (I'm a Hopetoun boy at heart).
  14. By posting it in this thread, he has entered. Last few days folks. Get your entries in to win. I might even go to Temora this weekend for another photo phest. Two Red Bull Air Racers, Matt Hall and Nigel Lamb, will be there. Nigel has come over from England to fly the Museum's Spitfire, and Matt will bring his Mustang. Awesome. There will be 2 visiting Avengers too. Just in time to post some more entries here. Anyone else?
  15. You can track west of the mountains until Wee Jasper (near Yass) and duck around the flatter area up there. Otherwise, the safest route is fairly direct to Adaminaby (track to the north of the highest point near Cabramurra to stay near the highway - it's a designated remote area). The lowest point in the Snowys is probably about there where the highway from Cooma to Tumut goes through. Once over Adaminaby, head east until you reach the Murrumbidgee valley south of Canberra and track direct from there. It's not too bad (unless your engine fails).
  16. Sounds like I'd better go and fly it so I can give you a report. It's the same basic design as mine and the Sierra. The rudder size is definitely big enough and has tons of authority (not that metric tonne - real tons) at any speed. I will confirm that when I fly it. Video sounds like a great idea. I think it's time to go to Taree again.
  17. The Cougar has flown! Got this from Garry today. The Cougar made its first flight today, all is good a slight trim change to the wing, the motor runs cold, one person she climbs at 1200fpm, i didnt stall it today ,but the buffet starts at 40kts clean, usally the stall is 10kts under this, and with flap 30kts, approach speed today i made it 50kts, rounded out at 40-45,and with no weight in it it floated a little, and a very slow touch down. At cruise speed 130kts at 3000rpm and the motor will go past 3200rpm full power. ne brake is a little soft but we are working on this, but a very nice aircraft to fly.and very good low speed handling.
  18. So it does Cam. Wikipedia happens to have the specs for an IO360 powered RV7 here. 504Kg empty, which seems to rule out legless dwarves too. The pilot would need to be an ethereal non-corporeal entity using fuel with as much substance as a Liberal Party counter-policy on Climate Change. Perhaps there's helium ballast.
  19. Sorry Darky, I had to hide that one. We have standards to maintain.
  20. Ah - I see. All the same I think Al should reconsider. I can set it up so that if you put the SD card in, it boots into air mode. If you take it out, it's stock standard car mode. Couldn't be easier. Plus I thought it was worth mentioning clearly for other readers. No idea about any projects to parse the DAH though. I love having the VNCs and VTCs on screen and avoiding CTA that way. With this method, the same chart is in my lap as on the screen, making it easy to get a positive fix and to resume own navigation when it breaks. I did massage the airfield list Maptrax sent with the last set of maps I bought into a format for import as waypoints. That worked well.
  21. That's completely wrong Bass - and I mean that in the nicest possible way. You can get all that and more in a car GPS, you just don't use the car software (unless you're in the car). I'm about to build another one for Turboplanner. 7" screen, usual car software, but also change to air software with everything you mention available on the one screen. Loaded with WACs, VNCs and VTCs, waypoints, airfield data if you want - and all this for under $400. If you fly VFR and therefore don't need terrain awareness (because you can see 5km min), these are all you need IMHO. I'm still using my car GPS (Mio Moov) with OziExplorerCE for the air, and I love it. I used it's predecessor for 3 years until it stopped recharging. They're so cheap, you can have a spare in the flight bag and still be $1,000's ahead of the all-singing aviation models. I only mention this because I think everyone should be aware how cheap they can be and still do everything we need. Cheers, Ross
  22. Wallaby a Monkey's Uncle. Great stuff Neil. The idea is certainly not hare-brained. The place will be jumping. I can't wait to see them hop to it. I had to get them off my chest (they were inside saying "Help! Help! I Kangaroo!" in a Scottish accent). Mmm - I really should be out flying. Bloody weather.
  23. Of course Darky. Thanks for the plane compliment Maj, but where the hell did you get "chester the molester"? If Darky comes for a fly, I promise not to molest her chest.
  24. Have you checked our Google Maps Airfield page? Looking here, Murwillumbah South looks worth checking out (as Dazza said).
  25. That's a great shot Philthy. Where the hell was it though? Would you be willing to send me a high res version? That would go straight to the pool room. GraemeK - I may not be as expensive as you think.
