  1. Bex, you are on the right track, a petition could have a strong effect. I have been writing to authorities about current issues but it is a battle, I have not got a straight answer, but I'm persistent ! I keep pointing out they didn't answer ! They are well versed in story telling. When it's all said and done, there is more said than done !

Seems history of CASA is all bad, had a friend have a run in with CASA years ago and sent the CASA guy running after his threats were recorded, accidentally recorded of course.   5. I'm not quite following your thoughts, a google search brought these up and it's similar to the Jabiru scenario. CASA had an opportunity to consult and discuss and may have come up with a plan that would provide a good solution. CASA did put it up for discussion but it showed it had no interest in what anyone had to say although they softened the action, an article said over 600 responses, do you think they read all of them ? I personally am waiting for many more responses to letters and am amused by the fact this engine has been around for quite a while and the experimental implications are ridiculous. An example is a Jabiru engine fitted with Rotec liquid cooled heads. To me CASA actions are Mafia style or is this what you infer SDQDI . They should identify the exact problem, exact model of engine, serial no, series and ask Jabiru to fix it. Jabiru engines had problems but now the biggest problem is if they are not perfect who would buy one ?

Advice of CASA Enforcement Action March 11, 2015 | members Members are advised of recent CASA enforcement action against a member resulting in the issue of a 6 month jail sentence, which was wholly suspended for two years provided he was of good behaviour. In 2012, the member, while not holding an RA-Aus Pilot Certificate, flew an unregistered RA-Aus aircraft below 500 feet over a body of water, buzzing a water skier, subsequently crashing and destroying the aircraft. He was found guilty of three breaches of the Civil Aviation Act and his actions brought our organisation into disrepute as a result. RA-Aus reminds members of the continual need to operate in a safe and compliant manner to ensure our organisation continues to enjoy the privileges already granted and for the provision of additional privileges in the future.
  8. He already has failed badly, in the CASA newsletter page he says you give feedback and he acts in relation to angel flight. So there was a lot of feedback regard Jabiru but all that has happened is NOTHING except ignoring the feedback. I believe there was 650 responses regarding Jabiru. We listened to feedback and acted CASA will not pursue the option of requiring community service flights to be operated under the authority of a self-administering organisation. This follows an analysis of the responses to a discussion paper issued in 2014 on the most appropriate safety standards for charity flights. In the discussion paper CASA indicated preliminary support for an option requiring community service flights to be conducted within the rules of a CASA approved self-administration organisation. However, responses to the paper opposed this option for a number of reasons including cost and complexity. CASA’s Director of Aviation Safety, Mark Skidmore, said at present the guidelines and practices used by community service flight organisations such as Angel Flight are sufficient. “We have listened to the feedback to CASA’s preferred option and we accept this is not the way to proceed,” Mr Skidmore said. “CASA is not proposing any changes to the existing regulatory requirements for community service flights at this time. That does not mean we have stopped looking at this issue completely as the discussion paper put forward ten options – including doing nothing, passenger briefings and additional pilot training and checking. If CASA does propose to explore any of these options further there will be additional consultation with the aviation community and the public before any changes are implemented.” There were 72 submissions in response to the community service flight discussion paper.

  11. You need to work out the best way for you as there is still a bit of ducking and weaving on the Victorian side. There is plenty of Tiger country on Victoria side if you totally avoid it your better off with Ayavner route which I just looked up the map and Ayavner route is better just not as scenic.

Hi, I use to live in Jindabyne and have flown to Mansfield, Corryong, Tumut and South Coast on various trips, the mountain crossings are not as bad as you might think, from Mansfield to Khancoban is clear and if you pick your route high enough you pass over several landing areas around Tom Grogin and swampy Plains once you pass threadbo with big car parks you can nearly glide to Jindabyne, (plenty of paddocks)which I done once to prove I could (almost) make it. Canberra is easy to fly around keeping outside control, I always called up to tell them I was going to stay out and transit and they gave me a Squawk code (transponder) anyway. The main thing to watch around mountains is wind and if it is windy stay well clear as this is a real learning curve that most underestimate.

Nev, I have after much writing to CASA for an explanation and receiving much irrelevant bla bla received a response from Mr Ungerman, he doesn't answer much, says he doesn't have time, blames other parts of CASA and says there are still gathering data in other words trying to justify, lots of words with no real facts. I think legal action is CERTAIN to follow, also I will not let this go as it does and has effected all of sports aviation, currently I know of many things that sport aviation are directly responsible for. Like I said earlier I'm happy to share just PM your email to me and I will forward, but I will not post on web until all responses have been received and whether there is an outcome in sight. If CASA blame him clearly they become responsible for this mess and litigation is certain so I will keep trying to get the facts. If CASA defend their actions which has and is happening they will look for more data to justify their actions that will make litigation more difficult. This has become a waiting game I believe, if CASA lift the limitation and there are engine failures they will be happy, this is the time to keep pushing CASA for facts as they don't have them and are probably waiting for the ATSB results. If CASA had any brains they would blame sport aviation dept and dismiss them and help the industry instead of destroying. We can all say jabiru engines are no good but there aren't a lot of alternatives and Jabiru have been progressively upgrading their engines and in support the latest seem to be a big improvement and to put a blanket limitation on Jabiru engines is a bit strange, it has been said many solid lifter engines have been doing life times trouble free and engines from 2012 are better than early ones.

Jem, I have the same letter from Truss and have written again in disgust of receiving a standard letter with not one question answered, I have written many times to CASA and after many unacceptable responses have finally got the big load from the main problem, many unanswered questions and lots of pathetic trying to justify their actions, will post all here soon but awaiting another response first, I can tell you that CASA is on a mission to destroy recreational aviation in Australia, if I'm wrong I probably won't be allowed to fly anymore for my stirring so far ! This is not just about Jabiru it is about the rights of Australian citizens, CASA think they can do what they like and Truss is supporting them. CASA have hurt a lot of people and I can assure you that the current government is going to get a lot of egg on their face soon, the new aviation director may be the shortest on record if he allows this circus to continue !

Jabiru's newsletter Jaba chat has made a statement about the impact of CASA's actions on aviation, I believe this problem to be very real, I wrote try to get supporting facts but got more ridiculous statements, if you agree with what has been stated by Jabiru please do not stay silent and write to the relevant government departments, CASA, transport minister etc. nothing will change if people stay silent, the registration debacle for RAA was a result of CASA's actions and I know of other things CASA have done which are almost impossible to believe but are real. Recreation aviation will cease to exist if CASA keeps up their ridiculous games run by amateurs and it will not just be about Jabiru as they have hurt many others already ! Jaba chat statement. CASA has stated on their website that there will be a review of the restrictions early in the New Year however they have not communicated to us when this review will take place. We will continue to work with the regulator to address issues however the unilateral action taken that was not backed up by robust and/or well analysed evidence is a concern for the aviation industry as a whole. Restrictions based on incomplete data, deficient analysis and possibly misleading claims have the potential to set a worrying precedent.

  19. You should not quote what you don't know about as you are wrong, the person you are referring to was a converting GA pilot not a student pilot so don't start making a comparison ! The point is here that the student must not go solo without recent engine failure practice . The most serious issue I believe is CASA are not acting in a way that good results are a likely outcome as they have proved to be wreckers not fixers !

The Presidents report is well written and recognizes the problems that are real, I have been told that some RAA and GA schools have seen increase in people wanting an RPL and decreasing seeking just a PC. In the past many GA PPL pilots have come to RAA for the advantage of simpler medical and self maintenance on aircraft. In my opinion a lot of GA pilots who convert to RAA have a lot of trouble getting use to light aircraft and for some reason appear to me to be involved in more misconduct (regard weather, altitude, VCA etc) and accidents than others, has anyone else noticed this ? Could it be overconfidence ? I hope RAA PC members who convert to RPL don't make any bad statistics. I do hold a PPL but I was trike and ultralight first, had my share of character building conditions in GA and ultralights.

  23. http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/download/caaps/ops/92_1.pdf There is a difference between a ALA and a just a landing strip, biggest difference could be ability to claim insurance also notice in the regulations about flight training at ALA. I think a pilot can land a plane where he thinks it is safe and has permission. Here is my landing strip ( paddock ) on google earth, the long strip is the normal operating strip, the others were cleared so in strong winds conditions I can safely land, the google photo was taken nearly 12 months ago. My aircraft is the only one that has ever used it. I do worry about liability and have marked it with a cross at each end and next to windsock post, the wind sock is removed after use and is not white or yellow but orange so it is not identified as an ALA. I will soon invite some to use but would not allow inexperienced pilots due to liability worries, would possibly write an indemnity note for a user to sign stating it is not an ALA but just a landing strip and to use at their own risk ! I personally have landed at a lot of bush strips in the past and was invited to be the first to land at a farm one way landing strip which had some interestIng features. At the moment we have had a lot of rain and the strip drains reasonable but not with the amount of rain at the moment, too wet in middle, can get out but would not be a comfortable landing for the J230, need a STOL. I make it a point to stay away from neighbours houses so not to piss them off, no one has done anything but watch and enjoy. Have offered all neighbour flights and some have taken up the offer, the council was doing work on road and dropped in to look, comment how quite it was and hardly heard it, saw the shadow first.
