  1. Contact Kyneton Aero Club, very serious AFR review but not silly.
  2. He's just stoned.
  3. Both Danny G and I looked at the Bushcat at Avalon some years back. I thought it looked good and seriously considered getting one. I have since followed Danny's posts about his build and am glad I didn't try it, but with local manufacture and support I hope they do well.
  4. I looked this story up and the accident may have been a stall, with the pilot detaching the canopy to bail out. The entire aircraft disappeared into a crater in the ground and only the canopy was found intact some distance away.
  5. I took these photos of VH-IVI at Bankstown around 1971. the writing on the tail said Mustang P51-D R.J. Whitbread Motors Pty Ltd Kogarah 587-8011 VH-IVI was registered in June 1969 to warbird proponent Langdon Badger. He sold it to Sydney businessman Ray Whitbread in September 1970. In mid-1973 the aircraft struck the ground in a vertical dive near Windsor, NSW; destroying the Mustang and killing Ray Whitbread, who was practising aerobatics. The canopy detached and struck him, rendering him unconscious.
  6. The energy absorbed helps the quick transition from flying to not flying.
  7. When I think of instructors, I picture a 40-something person or older imparting knowledge and wisdom. That has been my experience. Someone with a couple of hundred hours in their early twenties may be able to teach the basic skills, but they do not have wisdom. I think there should be a reassessment of minimum standards (age and hours) for instructors.

  9. But did you see the baggage container ingested the other day?
  10. I charge my Skyecho overnight on a 2.4 amp USB point. Gets to full charge. It seems to run indefinitely if I then plug it into the USB point in the aircraft while it is turned on.
  11. There was a great video of a Foxbat drone striking a Russian military base yesterday. On Telegram, so I can’t post it here.
  12. Within an hour of Kyneton at 110 knots, I can fly to Bendigo, Echuca, Tocumwal, Shepparton, Benalla, Millawa, Ballarat, Ararat, Riddel, Penfield, Melton, Lethbridge, Colac, Maryborough, Stawell, Kerang, Pyramid Hill. Probably a few others I can't think of. My favourites would be Ararat (coffee), Maryborough (always quiet), Tocumwal (coffee), Millawa (lunch), Melton (burger). Used to be Bendigo, Echuca and Shepparton but they brought in landing fees. Wherever you are going, you can check Notams and permission in the air if it is an hour away.
  13. Contrary to the argument for pre- planning, what I enjoy most is getting up to 3000 feet then thinking” where will I go today?” Then flying for up to two hours (total out and back) in any direction. I know all the territory and can’t get lost and I have an iPad and a phone with OzRunways and other good stuff. Probably a dozen airfields I can choose to land on if I wish within that range. A couple need Notam checking, most don’t. It’s not like a trip which needs planning, just the freedom of flying.
  14. It was the Bacchus Marsh Aero Club's Cessna 150.
  15. I have twice simulated radio failure in an unfamiliar aircraft by plugging my headset into the passenger socket.
  16. Maybe an award of wings to put on your mantelpiece might be better. The club shows its respect for your achievement without tempting you to embarrass yourself.
  17. So did we, but it was the pre-digital age.
  18. I see there are enamel wings available for the Mile High club.
  19. How about this for adrenalin boosting?
  20. The authorities should look into it.
  21. Just another shithole.
  22. IMHO there was more responsible driving when we had few speed limits. When I learned, there was no open road speed limit and just one in-town speed limit. Every driver had to decide what was safe for the conditions. If you got it wrong, Mr Plod could charge you with "speed dangerous" or "manner dangerous". Now there are varying limits everywhere, and most drivers take them to be the mandatory speeds for driving that segment. Thye drive to the limit regardless of conditions. I know when I say "slow down a bit" SWMBO replies "Its 80 here" and ignores me.
  23. No, a private pilot cannot fly for hire or reward. You need a commercial pilot, who is trained and tested to a higher standard.
