  1. The dredges are still there and I have clambered over them, now covered in jungle stuff. It was an amazing achievement for the time. The dredge was designed so that the tumbler, the biggest part, just fitted in the Junkers.
  2. By definition, it is not a UAV.
  3. I used to take out an assurance policy every year 50 years ago. The subs were deductible and payout was tax exempt, that is the only reason it made sense. Then they changed the tax rules and these policies disappeared.
  4. I have never enjoyed building things. I get my jollies out of taking old things apart, fixing the faults, and putting them back together. Have restored a few cars and bikes. I just cannot imagine building a plane, it would cause me a lot of grief. Happy to own one, have now owned two new and two used aircraft, and new is best!
  5. I have had my red ones since 2011. The sort with the spouts inside the cap when closed. The main trouble is the yellow spouts don't bend enough when you tip the can up it inevitably spills. Made worse if you have a Mr Funnel balancing precariously in the tank filler. I gave up when I got the high wing and now transfer using a 10 litre Tuff Jug which doesn't spill a drop. But you need to do the Mr Funnel bit first when you fill the Tuff Jug. It is expensive but you only need the one.
  6. I use the ag chemical ones for motorbikes, mower and sometimes cars. I have proper red plastic containers for aircraft mogas and I don’t use those for anything else.
  7. I use black plastic 10 litre ag chemical containers for fuel. They are embossed as suitable for petrol and I think that was a sales feature to attract farmers to them. But I don’t use them for aircraft fuel.
  8. Had to start with W and they couldn't think of an acceptable word? Had used a lot already.
  9. I understand they are only producing the J230 with a long delivery time ( more than a year).
  10. We've all flown through worse, or so I’ve been told in the aero club bar.
  11. Number 5 sounds like me. Taxying from my neighbour's hangar apron, I collided with a marker cone I don't have.
  12. I know an equal number of RA and GA aircraft owners. Their motivations for ownership are the same. Having owned both for periods of years, the ownership costs were similar. There is a trend toward RA aircraft ownership at present because: CASA medical limitations Old GA aircraft just got much more expensive (last two years) People with money want a modern machine with modern instruments Fuel prices have risen You can sell your GA plane for big $$ and buy RA (but someone must have bought the GA plane) We found out the kids/grandkids don't want to fly with us anyway There are very few friendly accessible GA training schools remaining
  13. Yep, $11.50 per hour in a Victa 100.
  14. The life coaches say to plough your own furrow.🙂
  15. In my O360 I ran 95 or 98 usually blended with at least 40% avgas. Paterson STC. I'm sure this was quite acceptable.
  16. Do you avert your eyes at the airfield? 😀
  17. Airtourers AT-100 and AT-115, Jabiru J-430 (with back seats permanently removed)? Early Ercoupes. Some Austers, Cubs, and various biplanes.
  18. Perhaps people are more happy with what they have now, and don't wish to sell?
  19. No one is proposing to take away any rights from existing flyers. The rules allowing Drifters and Thrusters are still there, if that is your thing.
  20. Having an autopilot (one on button for alt hold and wings level) must be a major safety benefit for those caught in IMC. BTW a friend flew for nearly 30 minutes in IMC on a six pack (instruments, not beer) with no IFR training and he survived. But his wife refused to ever get in a plane with him again.
  21. Well I didn’t expect that!
  22. I was reading his biography but left it in a Qantas seat pocket so never found out how it ended. I assume he died.
  23. I agree they topple over easily and always retain enough fuel to cause a spill after you are closing up.
  24. Pilots refused to use enclosed cockpits. The sound of the engine, the wind on one side of their face, and so on were essential for good aircraft control (they said).
  25. Saw on the news today a blue Foxbat made an emergency landing in Russian occupied territory. Seems it was doing air obs and should have stayed over Ukrainin territory. It threw a prop blade hence the landing. The pilot has been detained. This answered my wondering why the Ukrainians were not using Foxbats. Seems that are.
