  1. Having an autopilot (one on button for alt hold and wings level) must be a major safety benefit for those caught in IMC. BTW a friend flew for nearly 30 minutes in IMC on a six pack (instruments, not beer) with no IFR training and he survived. But his wife refused to ever get in a plane with him again.
  2. Well I didn’t expect that!
  3. I was reading his biography but left it in a Qantas seat pocket so never found out how it ended. I assume he died.
  4. I agree they topple over easily and always retain enough fuel to cause a spill after you are closing up.
  5. Pilots refused to use enclosed cockpits. The sound of the engine, the wind on one side of their face, and so on were essential for good aircraft control (they said).
  6. Saw on the news today a blue Foxbat made an emergency landing in Russian occupied territory. Seems it was doing air obs and should have stayed over Ukrainin territory. It threw a prop blade hence the landing. The pilot has been detained. This answered my wondering why the Ukrainians were not using Foxbats. Seems that are.
  7. It will be a short run as he is towing the ute.
  8. One farmer bought an ex Royal visit car with a glass screen behind the driver. He said it would stop the dogs licking him behind the ears.
  9. It didn’t happen. It was a photo montage done for publicity. The hole isn’t that big.
  10. I just sold a BMW boxer that was 38 years old. I never changed the carby diaphragms in all that time. Basically the same ones in a Rotax have to be changed every five years. So the level of caution is quite high.
  11. They can't be racist - most of the names on correspondence are from the subcontinent.
  12. I think it is a Yak. We have one on our airfield.
  13. My friend would not see a doctor about his condition because of CASA avmed. He died.
  14. At each renewal CASA require me to do a heap of tests that my cardiologist says are not necessary. And he would not ask for them, but they insist, and cost a lot. Just for a class 2, and I fly RAA now, so only needed to enter controlled airspace.
  15. The Vic emergency app reported a plane on the road at Harcourt, a busy road near a roundabout. Local gossip is that it was from Bendigo, landed briefly and took off again. No further information.

  16. Autopilot lets me look outside more. Less watching heading and alt.
  17. Had a Skyecho and a Mode C.
  18. Had that today. We were tracking about 090 and someone was tracking 010 across us at same altitude. They crossed our path about 10 mile ahead. Thanks Ozrunaways.
  19. All true, Onetrack, I was trying to understand the marketing of them to the general population. I suspect some confusion with CO. As I recall, increased CO2 causes rapid breathing which tells you something is wrong. As you say, it displaces O2 and low O2 symptoms is something pilots should know about.
  20. Ok, not getting an answer here I looked it up. My interpretation is that co2 detectors are made because they can be, and the marketing of them is based on peoples fear of the greenhouse end of the world. In other words, they are total BS. Of course, detection of CO2 in blood is an important medical technology.
  21. CO detectors I understand. But what are CO2 detectors used for?
  22. I once saw an interview with a chap who survived a flaming airline crash because he had his shoes on and wore a leather jacket. I have been inclined to keep my shoes and jacket handy for landings ever since.
  23. The Skyecho has made my relaxed and enjoyable flying a lot more stressful, looking for traffic I previously knew nothing about!
