  1. Forgive me... I'm new to Ozrunways, but does the Flight Planner automatically input magnetic variation from map data or somewhere, and can you see what has been applied to crosscheck?
  2. No pics here.. but I did post a first start video.. don't want to hijack the thread though.. http://www.recreationalflying.com/media/sonex-813-first-start-youtube.3302/
  3. Sometimes just making a start helps... the number of times I made screw-ups in my aircraft build, (admittedly nowhere as big to repair), I shut the door and left it to rot in the shed. I mulled and stewed on it for sometimes weeks.. much teeth gnashing and hair pulling! But once I decided on a course of action, maybe ordered in new materials and then actually picked up the tools to make a start, it all came together and was back on track in no time. The final inspection was last Monday and am waiting for the paperwork to return from RAAus, over 8 years from starting the Sonex project!
  4. Perhaps the pilot in question needs to review some of the WWII Stearman training films?
  5. PS I think Karl mentioned if the front pilot is too light there can be a W&B problem
  6. I had 130hrs on a 95:10 taildragger in my logbook but hadn't flown it for 9 years. took me 3 hours to get back into the swing of it... or should I say out of the swing? (boom boom) (its a tailwheel thing) Max pilot weight? mmm, not sure.. if you are at 200kg maybe.. I think from memory MTOW is 600Kg.
  7. I thought Sport Cub was $235/hr ? I flew with them recently to regain my TW endorsement, no where else within an hour or so of Adelaide I'm afraid.
  8. I seem to recall on this forum that someone did the RAus low level training but was refused the endorsement on their certificate by the incumbent Ops Manager... certainly a disincentive to do the training.
  9. I bought some 6061 .025" and .032" sheet for my Sonex from Airport Metals, Vic... their shipping rates for a couple of sheets rolled in a box were quite reasonable, from memory around $50 PS Boxes for rolled sheets are currenty supplied "free" http://www.airportmetals.com.au/pdf-stocklist.htm
  10. No you're spot on there Andy , no time at all.. had to point the nose quite steeply at the ground to regain 50kts and flare Luckily it was over the old parachute drop zone at Saltash near Willytown. I had been out over Tanilba Bay 10 minutes previously, that did scare me a bit afterwards lol.
  11. At least they got the prop back to hang on the wall... I had one depart once and it was just BBQ starter wood on retrieval. I can still see it rotating down like a helicopter with its big alloy pulley underneath.. as I switched the wildly overspeeding engine off and nosed over for the inevitable forced landing Ah the days of 300' height limits, 2 strokes and unreliable reduction drives..
  12. I heard recently from someone who contacted Bristel to get info on their cooling setup.. they said they had gone back to jabiru cooling ducts.
  13. You could wire an LED/12vdc indicator to the starter motor side of the start contactor/solenoid.. some units have an extra faston terminal for that reason. If the solenoid remains closed after the start button/key is released, the LED remains illuminated. Thus warning the operator the starter still has power applied to it. I have a master solenoid that supplies battery +ve power to the starter solenoid via a 4AWG cable, so when the Batt (Master solenoid) s/w is off, no power to starter or circuits anywhere. I don't have an indicator for the starter solenoid, but the wiring is in place if I want to hook one in, haven't bothered so far as I think its low risk.

  15. 60 ltrs, some examples of the 3300 engined a/c have fitted auxiliary tanks to increase the fuel margin. (in wings and behind seat) They weren't really designed as a cross country tourer, but people have flown them all over Australia and the US. The limiting factor for engines has been the installed weight, has to be less than 91KG or 200lbs. However there are examples successfully flying with Rotax 100hp and Corvair 120hp, but as you alluded they tend to be orphans when it comes to Factory support... and they insist its called something other than a Sonex on the rego.
  16. Heads up! Another RAaus issued General Airworthiness Advisory Inspection requirement. Relates to proper termination of swaged cable and thimble assemblies on all aircraft prior to next flight. Found on a Waiex aircraft undergoing a condition inspection. The cable assemblies were supplied by the kit manufacturer in an unserviceable condition. https://www.raa.asn.au/documents/airworthiness/Swage cable insepction bulletin 12082014.pdf
  17. Looks like the 100 series Cessnas in private use have until June 2016 to implement SIDS. Some scary photos included in the AWB - http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/airworth/awb/02/048.pdf
  18. Noice.. Nick when you buy it, it will be LOL
  19. very old? Bah humbug, good way to own an older aircraft with all the responsibility that that entails If you're a kick the tyres, light the fires kind of person then its probably not the aircraft one should be looking at?
  20. Oh yeah, there used to be a couple of Yahoo forums/groups for Sonex and Aerovee builders, they are now closed (Read Only) most of that function has moved to http://www.sonexbuilders.org/ ..if you wanted to read up on them a bit more
  21. Jab 2200 - cue - Jab bashers and Optimistic icons ha ha
  22. There is a early Jab 2200 tail dragger at my strip that will cruise regularly at 115kts. It is lightly built, has a cruise prop and has the wheelpants and leg fairings fitted. A lot of builders are disappointed when their Sonex doesn't achieve factory figures but don't often appreciate why.. has led to some speculation that the air is different in Wisconsin. lol
  23. All depends on the maintainer/owner like any engine, if its tuned and properly maintained then it should pull 3100+ with the standard propeller.
  24. It has no leg fairings or wheelpants fitted, theres 7-10 knots right there... and trigears are that little bit slower with 3 lumps in the airstream! Also depends on the serviceability of the Aerovee engine and wether it will pull decent revs.
  25. "not worth it to resell, but 25k inc engine in the air...the engines are a 2.1lt vw i think they are around 7k new, ive seen some youtubes of them doing aerobatics and they look pretty solid, are there any owners here?" Hey Acro, there is a pretty active Sonex group here : http://sonexaus.wikispaces.com There are around 106 plans/kits sold to Australia, and 28 flying examples of Sonex,Waiex, Xenos and Onex. according to Sonex Aircraft LLC official figures. 2 Sonex including my own, and 1 Waiex are just about ready for first flights... probably a few more waiting in the wings. The figures you quote above would be in the US, you would have to factor in import costs to get engine and kit here. They are quite cheap in the resale market, not sure why as they are great bang for buck. A tri-gear aerovee has just been listed on the RAAus members market for $30k. If I had just started building mine, I probably would have dropped everything and bought it. We have a handful of VH registered examples as well, no problems doing basic aerobatics. I imported my kit 8 years ago, so wont quote you costs as the exchange rate was bloomin' poor!
