1. Hi Marc Welcome to the List and also to the band of Shepp flyers. Hope you have joined/will join the Aeroclub and enjoy like-minded company with our 100 or so members. We have a free BBQ Friday nights except first Friday each month when we have a casserole night when everyone brings an offering. Saturday’s we do $10 lunches and Sunday mornings we do a $5 cooked breakfast. First Sunday is $10 Pancake flyin day and we generally end up with 30+ flyers coming in. The club owns a Tecnam and a couple of our members have Jabirus. Looking forward to seeing you around Kaz
2. Apparently a trike. Most of the lake is bounded by forested mountains and the accident site appears to be between Goughs Bay and Mountain Bay. Google gives an excellent idea of the terrain there. Water very deep even close to shore. Spent a lot of time on the lake when I was young.

4. Happens all the time in business ... called factoring. Company A sells its debt to company B for say 50% of book value. Company B recovers any more of the debt than the 50%, it makes a profit.

6. Looks really nice. They are a very neat and well-built little aeroplane and I’ve often thought that might be the way for me to go one day. Would be keeping it in the family sort of because Howies’ mum was my Mum’s cousin.
7. A year or two back, I joined downwind with call, turned base (call), turned final (call) and saw a C150 going down the taxiway. It just kept going. Didn’t stop at the lines on the taxiway exit. Turned onto the runway (I was now on a VERY short final), gave a garbled call and accelerated. I had the barn doors open and detoured across to my right about 10’ AGL as the C150 climbed past me. I called him up to protest...”sorry mate, didn’t see you as I was in a hurry.” FAIL!
8. http://www5.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_reg/car1988263/s162.html Aircraft landing has right of way but poor airmanship displayed.
9. I first learned to spin and recover in Blaniks and other gliders such as the Bocian and IS28. I did a lot of other things in Blaniks too and shudder now when I consider their structural problems identied much later in time. I got my TW endorsement in an old Decathlon BIK and learned to spin, roll and loop it, too. But it’s a long time since then and I would definitely want some instruction before trying again.
10. It’s worth pointing out also, Joe Hockey and Scomo pushed to have it raised to 70. The latter changed his mind after he ascended.
11. Scomo was famously quoted as saying that we shouldn’t be relying on the existence of an age pension down the track which gives me cause to be concerned. I’m 75 and still working full-time because it’s the only way I can manage to fly. Once I stop I’ll be solely reliant on the age pension. My super is just enough to pay out my mortgage on a very modest home. I know some might say I’m irresponsible spending money on an indulgence but I have to tell you my return to flying and the aeroplane gave me a reason for living...a prospect that had been previously unlikely for a considerable period of time. And yes, CASA AvMed knew of my history and renewed my medical after ascertaining that my mental health issues had been resolved. I know that they are often criticised but I found them very professional and reasonable. I recently passed a biannual examination and my licence was renewed for a further two years. It would be nice to see my pension, whenever I eventually claim it, adjusted to take into account the decade plus of work performed and consequent tax paid since I was first eligible for it. Just dreaming...
12. I saw Albo being interviewed on the telly last night and hardly recognised him...looked like a heart attack waiting to happen. John Howard looked and sounded even worse. Would be nice to see some political renewal happening and a new leader for Labor could be the start of it. There aren’t many stars on either side and would be a change to see a new one rising.
13. Pretty much like the Liberal policy...you only get the barebones and no substance when you don’t go looking further. “The Coalition will strengthen our aviation industry and allow it to be more competitive. We will ensure our aviation sector is safe, reliable, efficient, competitive and proud to be Australian. To support the growth of our aviation industry, the Coalition will:  abolish the carbon tax and its insidious impact on aviation fuels and aviation businesses;  establish a formal Aviation Industry Consultative Council to meet regularly with the Minister;  establish a high level external review of aviation safety and regulation in Australia;  ensure that the Australian Transport Safety Bureau is adequately resourced;  reform the structure of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority;  focus on the better utilisation of Australian airspace;  support regional aviation by introducing a new and better targeted En Route Rebate Scheme;  recognise the importance of Australian airports to the economy;  revitalise the General Aviation Action Agenda;  continue to promote aviation liberalisation;  enhance aviation skills, training and development; and  ensure that aviation security measures are risk based. The Coalition will ensure Australia has a safer and more competitive aviation sector” http://lpaweb-static.s3.amazonaws.com/Coalition%202013%20Election%20Policy%20–%20Aviation%20–%20final.pdf People only see what they want to see in the political debates. And the Liberals this time around have adopted for the traditional Opposition approach of “small target” and no policy revelations while Labor has been pumping them out like a Government resting on its laurels. All very confusing for the political pundits including FT.
14. I’m a little slow...was looking at the first quiz and wouldn’t have picked Wilcannia because ERSA shows gravel both strips. Kaz
15. First one is Cobar I reckon. Kaz
16. I did a terrible thing to a passenger when gliding back in early 80’s. We had an open day and I was doing rides...lots of them. Winch launches are quick and there was title thermal activity so my day was a boring repetition of ups and downs. A young man got in and, after I briefed him and made sure he was properly strapped in, we were away. The 450 hp Packard driving the winch had us going up like an elevator and my pax was clearly exhilarated. We talked about it after release as we floated around and he expressed interest in doing some more exciting stuff. I said, “how about a stall turn?”. He enthusiastically agreed. I did a quick HAZEL, stuck the nose down to get 90 knots, raised the nose to the heavens and when all went quiet, kicked on left rudder and the dear old Blanik responded. We weren’t on our back, but it was a really nice manoeuvre that had us coming back in the opposite direction after recovery from the near vertical. My passenger screamed! It wasn’t the scream of excitement that kids give on the Big Dipper. It was more primeval... the sort of thing I often imagined myself doing if confronted by a Great White when diving off Port Phillip Heads. I levelled out and did my best to calm him and he just very quietly said, “Just get me down”. He walked away when we landed and I’ve never forgotten that I ruined what started out as a great experience for an an initial flyer just to give myself a few moments of fun. Kaz PS. My punishment came later that day when another young hopeful spewed out the little vent window beside him. He was sitting in the front seat so it all came back in through my vent window in the back!!! Kaz
17. Not guilty of manslaughter and guilty of reckless flying endangering life seem to indicate that a person died as a result of the low flying (below 500’). Flying below 500’ in itself is not reckless flying as there are exemptions including when taking off or landing, and stress of weather. But reasonable care must be exercised in doing so. Flying below 500’ without cause, doing so recklessly, and killing another person in the process is what attracts the very serious penalty. If the Court confirmed the loss of licence, I expect the person who lost their licence would need to apply to a Court for reinstatement similar to a driver’s licence. if the Court made no order, the person will need to apply for reissue and take CASA to the AAT when they refuse it as they no doubt will. kaz
18. Generally, only reason a PPL is cancelled is by CASA taking legal action against the holder...otherwise it is essentially a licence in perpetuity. What expires and must be periodically renewed are your Class 2 medical and your ability to exercise the privileges of the licence, both of which ordinarily occur at two-yearly intervals. I cant help with the rest of your inquiry. kaz
19. How do you ensure no shock damage done to engine before flying again? kaz
20. It’s all the fault of predictive text, Frank...at least that’s my excuse.
21. I do too, Mac. BUT, I don’t rely on others making them and I don’t rely on them having a radio to hear me. Quite a few of the older aeroplanes without generators flying around no radio or a pissweak portable without external aerial. kaz
22. The rule is “see and avoid” using Mark 1 Eyeballs...Visual Flight Rules. There isn’t even an obligation to have a radio fitted except at Registered and Certified aerodromes so its really important to keep a good look out rather than trusting to God and a radio call. kaz
23. I am not quite so amenable as you...I shouldn’t have to prove I don’t owe them money, they should have to prove I do. ive also had bills no doubt courtesy of poor radio transcripts or perhaps someone using my call sign to mislead. But it’s a poor show when companies invoice you for a service and their system is so fraught with issues they can’t get it right but want you to provide proof you should be exonerated at your expense. Perhaps pilots in that situation need to invoice Avdata for the expenses they incurred in responding in those circumstances? kaz
24. Not so long ago, Australian aircraft working in remote areas had to be equipped with HF and the usual aerial config was a wire from wing tip to top of fin to other wing tip, or fin to fuselage. The military developed a compact loop that could be fitted in the tail. The older truck aerials had several windings to give the choice of a small range of frequencies but you had to plug into the correct one for the frequency chosen. Nearly everyone had 2020 which was the “galah” frequency for chatting. Modern mobile aerials are tunable and expensive. The modulation you get on HF SSB gives an unusual character to voices being transmitted and solar flare interference can be extreme. kaz
25. You need to contact Gliding Federation Australia https://glidingaustralia.org/ good luck kaz
