  2. Shepparton re-elected Suzanna Sheed as Independent for our region. Last time she tipped out the incumbent National who had a 17% margin and thought she owned the seat. Nationals had decades of representation both State and Federal but took support for granted. Sheed has won large lumps of money from ALP since...hospital building program, new court house, rail upgrades, water guarantee, new schools....heaps! We got nothing when we were a “safe” seat. kaz

  6. Definitely not skidding... I routinely do a slipping turn onto final so I can see where I’m going and a 9 knot XW max means the into wind wing is usually down in the flare. The Auster has barn doors, too. kaz

  11. Wait until the new charts come out. There will be many more ALAs marked and they will be 126.7 which is what you want. Of course, there will be a heap of them and the frequency will no doubt be “busy” because there is also a number of much more active aerodromes that use 126.7, too. VFR pilots using the remaining unmarked ALAs with very occasional traffic can do what they like, in my view because no-one other than the locals will know they are there, anyway. You can live in hope that passers by will be overflying at a height greater than your circuits or you can make a call on area. There are half a dozen unmarked private strips in a 20 mile radius of Shepp and I’ve never heard anyone operating out of them make a call on the occasion of their arrival or departure at those locations whether on Area or the Shepp CTAF or 126.7. I suspect it’s the same everywhere else. Kaz

  14. It’s on a chart used for navigation so 126.7 is the choice in the absence of a dedicated frequency. CASA has said it is working with ASA to add many more ALAs to the charts. As always, you need to refer to both WAC and VTC. KAZ

(ii) Avgas 82UL: the latest version of ASTM D 6227 The reference (ii) interests me. I wonder if 82UL is being supplied to NT ? My sense is this would be higher in aromatics, like Mogas, and without lead, but I don’t know what the possible effects might be. I also read a research report that compared two 0-320 engines running in identical circumstances for 150 hours, one on Mogas and one on Avgas, without detectable differences in VSR. Would have been more impressive if they had both run to TBO? . Kaz
  17. Very interesting Abstract...I don’t have access to the whole article but it makes sense to my limited understanding and memory of racing fuels a long while ago. Adding lead (TEL) increases octane rating without impacting fuel burn speed. So the fuel manufacturer can set a mix of fuel to achieve desired flame speed and then adjust octane up by as much as 20 octane numbers with the TEL. So first benefit is better combustion and no knocking. As a secondary effect, TEL oxidises in the chamber to PbO, Pb SO4, and a bit of PbCl and PbBr all of which act on the valve seat and face to form a protective lubricant barrier reducing the erosion of the metal by the passage of hot exhaust gases. When I was young, the lead content of all Mogas fuels was much higher than now and we used to pour in toluene (methyl benzene) to make the mix more potent. But we also added upper cylinder lubricant in the hope the valves would last a bit longer. Kaz

  20. What is risked is an action in defamation against the person making the allegations which were rejected by a court AND against the owner of this website. IT’S NOT FAIR TO IAN! There was a 28day window to file an appeal and it wasn’t lodged. End of story Kaz
