  1. There is no doubt that each of these areas of activity occurs contrary to common sense, good training and sound airmanship. The real question is whether onerous regulation written in copious quantities in language that can't be understood by most including me imposing horrendous penalties whilst denying the basic premise of our Westminster system laws that one is innocent until proven guilty will turn the accident rate around. The data and that article strongly suggests that it's not! What we need is an ongoing education campaign building on the individual and collective responsibility of each and everyone of us. There needs to be a real sense of trust between the Regulator and GA pilots, and legislation that fosters rather than discourages aviation by those of us who provide so many benefits to our country's economy. Kaz PS. Just for the pedants...I deliberately omitted punctuation in para 2 because it came out in a rush!
  2. Some blokes will use any excuse....Kaz
  3. ADSB will solve all their woes....won't it? Kaz
  4. If this could be got out to the whole RAAus membership what a fantastic impact it would have, not only on those responsible for the regulatory debacle we ALL have to deal with, but also on the standing of this movement on the rest of aviation in Australia. Please support the petition by signing it and encouraging your mates to do likewise. Kaz
  5. Doc Fergy had one at Dookie back in the late 70s. He also had an SIAI Marchetti! I haven't seen or spoken to him for 20 years but try {[email protected].} and see if you get a response. I remember it was extremely slow but climbed nearly vertically from no takeoff roll. Good luck Kaz
  6. Sorry Storch. DAS is the the Director of Aviation Safety... mark Skidmore.
  7. Storch you need to put that question to the DAS. Kaz
  8. What about the costs of postage? My office is paying $1.00 for each letter we mail out now. Even with bulk discounts, it seems clear that posting 8500 magazines 12 times each year represents another significant cost. Kaz
  9. My Personal details associated with my VH registration are out there for everyone to see on CASA's website. I rather suspect that RAAus is obliged to provide its members' details including registration numbers to CASA because CASA has the overall responsibility for its operations under the Act...and , of course, it does everything in the name of safety. Kaz
  10. The NDB at Shepparton is being retained for practice approaches. Kaz
  11. You speak for yourself SSCBD...!!! Kaz
  12. Yes Nev ...and both have good checklists and use them. The AUSTER W&B requires me to empty the belly tank first and, if I switch to it soon after take off, the main is still nearly full and...blue streaks on the white paintwork don't look good but the cause is immediately discernable. In a low wing it's not so easy to see fuel loss occurring. Kaz
  13. Well Storchy...you have moved the conversation where I was hoping. If you have a return line and you are drawing from the other tank, you will decant fuel to the one with the return line and even eventually lose fuel overboard. Kaz
  14. Does it matter if you forget and leave it on during the whole flight? Kaz
  15. This is exactly the case if you are seeking to use the exemption from carrying paper charts and ERSA. You must navigate from the charts, electronic or paper, and not solely by using the GPS. I use an iPad and an iPad mini so I have backup on long trips. But I also still use my paper charts and handwritten flight plan. That said, I have done a fair bit of flying around the country including way Outback and I have found the iPad GPS very accurate, and even more so when blue toothed to my GPS mouse. I see some of the meeces are now being produced with a TSO and sooner or later (probably later unless our Regulator undergoes a massive change in direction) this will have to be accepted for primary navigation. Kaz
  16. And if you regularly land on other than bitumen there is the ever-present threat of the engine ingesting foreign bodies including dust while the air filter is by-passed. The late Terry Otway tested me for my Pilot Certificate and his short final check was "RFC" (Royal Flying Corps) Runway clear Flaps set Carby heat OFF. Kaz
  17. Discriminating on the basis of age in areas of public life such as accommodation, education, employment and services is Prima facie unlawful under the Age Discrimination Act in Australia. It's unlawful unless a law renders it lawful or if certain other exemtions apply. Services are a bit of a grey area and I doubt anyone really understands what the High Court was saying in IW v City of Perth but I had the Full Court of the Federal Court hold that the provision of a birth certificate is a service. I seem to remember that Australian commercial pilots working in RPT had to retire at 60 until an inquiry was conducted and, based on actuarial data, the age was increased to 65. That issue did not, as far as my recollection goes, see the Court examine the issue of a licence as property and therefore it's revocation being a matter for compensation on just terms under the Constitution. One day.... Kaz

    VH-VRV

There is an immaculate Auster VH-KAZ that not only has my name but also wins most of the best Auster Awards...although mine beat it at the Auster-Short Wing flyin at Wentworth. Kaz
  19. We had a flying vet when I was on the station...the piano tuner (Salvo Brigadier Cake) came by road. I'm an occasional flying lawyer now and I'll be flying myself to a conference in Perth in August. Kaz
  20. Yours free-hold one week....goodness knows whose free the next. Kaz
  21. Possibly serious locals, too!!! Kaz
  22. I think it's time to stop and smell the roses :construction:f And perhaps write those letters to the new Minister who seems to think everything is ok in their world of aviation and CASA is doing a great job keeping the public safe. Kaz
  23. There aren't many calls you are required to make and radio should be more about listening than broadcasting. But we do have to dance between frequencies at times, especially when only one radio is fitted. A flight from Moorabbin north along the coastal VFR Route involves: MBN Twr. 123.0 Melb Rad. 135.7 (MEN and Yarra CTAF..possibly) Bacchus Marsh CTAF 118.8 Melton, Penfield, Riddell, Romsey CTAF's 126.1 And all this in just 53 NM I have busted CTA once and that was enough. It was a long while ago and before GPS was ocommon. I was doing a Navex MBN-MEN-HSM and I cut the corner at the former TARGET reporting point. I then mis-identified Melton as Bacchus Marsh and climber to 2500' too quickly busting the Melbourne Control zone. I was on the CTAF not Radar and didn't hear him abusing me! He caught up with me a bit further on and what he said to me did nothing for my confidence to complete the rest of the flight!!! Kaz
  24. Mike If you are filing the surface of the linings then please wear a good dust mask. They are more than likely of an age where they are made of an a serous compound material. Geoff Williams has a very nice Tripacer at Tyabb when he's not flying choppers up here. He did the restoration of this himself and would be a great source of information for you and Chris. He is also a great guy and you would enjoy meeting him. The Auster starts creeping at around 1500 rpm but the type's brakes were never known for their effectiveness. If you decide to fit Clevelands, you should also get rid of the training wheel and make it a real aeroplane! Cheers Kaz.
  25. Perhaps parallax error Nev? The VSI says nothing happening. Kaz
