I am having a holiday with the family in Tasmania in October. I am going to try to hire an aircraft for a day to do some sightseeing with them (4 seat or more). Anyone know a good source - preferably in the northern half ?

Have just had a quick look through this thread - seems to be a variety of opinion on stabilised approaches. What is being taught these days ? I have always been taught that the type of stabilised approach that the commercial jets use where there are specific requirements re altitude, distance out, etc is not really suitable for light single engine aircraft. Main reason is that once set up in one of those stabilised approaches you are behind the drag curve and need significant power to maintain the glideslope. This is a very easy and predictable way to land as long as everything goes well but what happens if you have an engine failure in that configuration ? You normally don't really have much choice if flying an ILS but for normal landings I prefer to have a bit of a safety margin - a planned approach rather than fully stabilised.

Most light aircraft comps in GA (such as those run by the RFACA) include spot landing comps which are fun - and have variations including glide approaches. Basically they set up a string fence across the runway and then have marked touchdown points at 10 metre intervals with varying score for where you touch down. In these comps they always have someone in the plane checking that you follow proper procedure. The total points for the event is a combination of the inflight stuff ( checklists, heights, speeds, etc) and the score on the touchdown. Its great practice.

I have seen the "Zero" a number of times, my understanding is it is a converted AT6 / Harvard. They did a number for the Tora Tora Tora film - not sure if it is one of those.

Camden Haven is also for sale in Aviation Trader - that would be a nice spot - right on the river !! I have been buying Lotto tickets ever since I saw it for sale.

Yes - I liked the VH-ABC rego - would be worth a bit if they are tradeable !! - the Auster was VH-BTE - both seem to be registered in the same family altrhough different individuals. Seems a shame to have them sitting there gathering dust - plenty of space for one in my shed !!

Looks interesting !! Wonder how quickly it gets airborne on water. Must be a bit of a worry landing in choppy water. On another subject I noticed in one of the hangers a Tiger Moth and an Auster - do they ever fly ? They look somewhat dusty.

I was busily mowing our lawns under the circuit area of The Oaks yesterday. There was an unusual aircraft flying over - a biplane. From the ground it looked sort of like an amphibian. Any of The Oaks flyers care to fill me in ? Went for a drive down to the field later on but it was no longer there. ...Ian

Hi, I have just come across this discussion about natfly. Sounds like a great event. I am going to try to fly up and have a look probably on the Saturday from Camden. Does one have to book to fly in or just turn up ? Where can I find more information ?

May take a while for The Oaks airstrip to dry out - we live next door and have already had over 200mm !!

Great to see I am not the only one who is addicted to both flying and motorbikes. My taste in bikes is a bit different with a small collection ranging from 1912 to 1939 !! I guess it fits in with the fact that I like old aircraft too !! My "modern" is a 76 R90/6 BMW.

From my experience with taildraggers I think there are two critical points. One is knowing the three point attitude for the aircraft - sit in it on the ground for a while as has been suggested. The other is to get the approach numbers correct for the aircraft - approach too fast and it all becomes ugly !!

The private pilot medical for GA is nowhere near as comprehensive as the commercial one. As long as you are reasonable healthy you will pass !! I don't mind doing it anyway as it is an enforced medical checkup every couple of years which can't be a bad thing.

I must have missed that bit about the altitudes when reading it - bit of a worry if we have too many people of varying levels of fitness operating aircraft up there !! -
The Oaks got a little bit of rain this morning but missed the rest - but hey we are in the catchment area - it doesn't rain here !!

Thanks Arthur - so the Lightwing can carry me, instructor and fuel ? I was thinking after visiting the airfield a couple of times that there were not any suitable aircraft there that I could legally train in with two people !! Certainly the small Jabiru's with the 430KG MTOW don't work. FYI - you probably use my property as a landmark in the circuit - we have the pine forest where a lot of aircraft turn base for runway 36 !!
