  1. I would like to think you are correct, rather than crazy win!!! However, I believe the economics are not there for someone to start up a manufacturing aircraft business catering for an 'entry level' type machine of the sort you describe. Any takers out there want to give it a go? Pud
  2. Interesting maj. It seems there is not a lot you can do in a 582 except not do long descents without warming the engine from time to time, and being aware when conditions are ripe for icing i.e. mainly humidity and cool conditions, although temperature would be a secondary consideration after humidity. I can see, around my area at least, these conditions would be present on cool winter mornings (when I like to fly) and also during that time before thunderstorms develop (sultry?), when I don't like to fly as the conditions are often unpleasant then. I also like to fly very early mornings in the middle of summer - dry as a wooden god, so very little risk then of carby icing I imagine. Pud

  4. So, would the consensus be to warm a Rotax engine on prolonged idle settings such as in a long descent? We are talking Australian conditions here, although we have a large range of climatic conditions anyway. If so, would you always do this, or only when conditions are conducive to icing? I remember farri telling me he has had carby icing on a Rotax - can't remember if it was a 503 or 582 though. I assume this was in the Cairns region, so quite tropical and humid conditions I expect.   7. Yeah, I hear you daz, and I can see where you are coming from. Maybe my term "BS" was a bit strong but I was there to get signed out on the Thruster - I already had an RAAus certificate so it seemed a bit strange to teach me 'undercarriage down' on a Thruster. Correct me if I'm wrong, but recreational aircraft on the RAAus register with retractable undercarriage would be in the minority wouldn't they? Pud
  8. I nearly wet myself in the left hand seat of the Thruster one day. The instructor in the right hand seat was going through the downwind checks I should be doing...., and called "Undercarriage down and locked". I couldn't believe the BS!!! Pud

  10. Gavin Thobaven has emailed some information on Westfly - here is part of his email.... On Saturday we had about 70 aircraft on field plus however many powered parachutes. We estimate about 1000 people. Over 230 stayed for dinner on Saturday night. A committee was established to plan Westfly for 2013 so keep an eye out for the advertising. So I would say it was a successful event that can only get better. Pud
  11. Good questions win. I must confess I did not mention RAAus once to anybody whilst I was there on Saturday of the event. And no one mentioned any issues of a RAAus nature to me. All comments were positive about the event, and with the attendance at the event (although I haven't seen any figures) I would say recreational flying in WA is in good shape. I had conversations (albeit some were brief) with our rep Gavin Thobaven, Jill Bailey (Assistant Ops Manager), Deam Tompkins (Assistant Tech Manager) Steve Vette, Riley, Friarpuk, Brett Campany from Rotovation, Bevin from Avplan, and countless others who, I imagine, are members of RAAus. The conversations all centred on flying, aircraft and what a great event this was. To be fair, people were not thinking about the governing body too much. I believe a Q&A session was programmed with the RAAus representatives there, but I did not hear when it was on, so did not attend. Hopefully someone who did attend can provide an account of what happened. Pud

  16. Yep, I reckon the start of something good. On speaking with our board member Gavin Thobaven, he is of the opinion (and so am I) we will need a committee to organise the event going forward, as this year was organised by a few people, with others giving a hand as needed. Gavin's thinking is that we run the event bi-annually so as not too clash with Monto which, apparently is run every second year. So if we go down that path then we will have another Westfly next year to align ourselves on the off year to Monto. This is just opinion at the moment so don't take it as Gospel. Next year we need a "Recreational Flying" presence Ian; whaddayareckon? Pud

  19. I certainly had fun at the 1st day of Westfly at Whitegum Farm. Met up with a few guys from the forum - spoke with Riley, Brett (doing helicopter flights in the R44), Friarpuk and son Sean, and Bevan who was busy on the AVplan stand. Here's a few photos taken qhite early in the day before it got busy. A nice kit built Wasp. Start of the line up early on day 1. Friarpuk and son Sean from Katanning Pioneer - it's for sale too. A foxy Foxbat. Savannah, possibly the most represented aircraft on day 1. Bantam powered by a Jabiru engine. This one is for sale too. An interesting fuel gauge with sight mirror mounted on the strut. Wire braced Drifter. Not an RA aircraft, but what the heck. Pud
  20. It seems I squeezed your 'Passion button' with my post TP. Well you squeezed mine as well, hence the reason that some time has gone by before I replied. I won't be defending my opinion or my stance here but some clarification for you... Polls on this forum have little value in my view, in the wider scheme of things because so few of the membership actually provide a view or cast a vote. That's why I didn't vote in the poll, not because there was not an option of "I couldn't give a toss", although I do believe most members wouldn't give a toss. My suggestion of a 'a simple certificate/licence administration similar to your driver's licence and vehicle registration system' would actually prevent the current mess, and my comment 'Then we could all go and join a social flying club to build our ivory towers!' was to intimate the immunity from the current problems if the 'flying club' was having similar issues - the ramifications would not be far reaching. You didn't comment on this TP. As for your comment 'So it's very disappointing to see you turn on them, not stand by and help them.', nothing could be further from the truth, but I don't intend justifying my stance to you. I will state though that this forum and a lot of people in it, yourself included TP, gave me much help and support during my Thruster restoration project, for which I was, and still am, most grateful. It is why I am still on this forum and probably always will be, to contribute in some small way when I can. Pud

  25. I judge it so when I turn onto downwind my jury strut attachment to the main strut sits on the runway. I fly the trusty Thruster so LP, means I am at 500 agl. But doesn't matter if I fly a 1000agl circuit - still have the jury strut on the runway. Pud
