  2. Certainly did Terry. It's a 2.58 reduction box as stamped on the little flat plate top centre front of the housing. I also recall counting the teeth on the drive cog and the gear in the reduction box which also checked out as a 2.58 gearing. Thanks for your interest here - many heads working a problem are much better than my beat up ol' skull!! Because of the prop pitch/reduction box configuration I'm leaning(no pun intended) towards a fuel supply issue, maybe the main jets are not correct. If I apply the formula for calculating the correct jet size for my conditions (35 degrees max and 4500 feet ASL) I should use a 155 size jet. I'm going to check but Gary Flood says there should be 165 jets in the carbies supplied by Floods. Substituting 155 jets won't solve the problem though cause I probably need more fuel to get the required revs - not less. Pud

  4. I did some testing over the weekend.... Water temp gauge reads correct, so engine is definitely overheating. Checked operation of thermostat and it opens, as it should at 55-60*. Tacho reads correct when read against an optical rev counter on the propeller, so engine is not developing full revs. Changed out sparkplugs and all 4 are a nice tan colour - very consistent across all plugs. Also, at the suggestion of Poll, I changed the oil in the reduction box to a lighter grade - no change unfortunately. So Riley, expect a call chasing those radiators so I can check if they will solve the overheating problem! Get the coffee ready! Spoke with Gary Flood today - he has suggested I check the main jet size is 165 which he says is what it should be. He also suggested checking to ensure the needle jet assembly is located beneath the white plastic guide at the top of the carburetor. All of these will be tried next time I'm at the hangar - not for a few weeks now probably:bad_mood: Any other suggestions you have will be tried if at all possible, or at least thought about:dizzy: Pud

  9. Yes turboplanner, I'm fully aware of the move away from prescriptive legislation. The point of my post was that the circus worker/electrician was not breaking any legislative law or regulations by using his work platform. He may have performed the work in an unsafe manner according to a Safe Work Method Statement, if one existed. Pud
  10. Soon we will have the National Harmonisation OHS Code (or close versions of it) as law in all Australian jurisdictions - read 'states'. In my reading and interpretation of the Western Australian OHS Act (we haven't adopted the national code yet) and the National OSH Code, there is no prescriptive provisions at all in the way work must be done - there are Codes of Practise and Guidance Notes but these do not have to be complied with. My interpretation is that all hazards must be assessed, by a 'competent person' and a Job Safety Analysis (JSA), or Safe Work Method Statement created. In the building industry the JSA/SWMS is only required for 'high risk construction work'. There are 19 examples of this given in the documentation. My view of the national code is that no matter the task undertaken by a worker (not employee), there must be an assessment done and a decision made - the decision can be that no extra safeguards or new work procedures are required to do the work safely. By the way FD; the 'they' you refer to is usually a 'competent person' employed by the company (new term for company/business is "Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking"), not a Government instumentality charged with administering the law. Yes motz, this is a little outside the scope of this section. Pud

    Thanks eightyknots, I still have some issues and maintenance is ongoing with these old rag and tube jobs - but that's part of living the dream!! I just love being able to jump in and swing the prop anytime I can get to the airfield. Pud

  15. Both carbies came with the brand new engine from Bert Floods, so the settings are factory settings and have not been adjusted. This engine has had these characteristics since the very first time it was fired up. Pud

  19. If I've done this correctly then the pitch blocks are definitely 12* Do I need 11* pitch blocks or should I look for the problem elsewhere? Pud
  20. That's what I'm doing all the time Barefootpilot, have done since the 582 was run in, but I need to do something about it before I inadvertently let the temp get above 80* one day when my attention is distracted. Pud

  25. Well here's a photo of the pitch blocks showing a 'cast in' number where the Ultra-Props documentation says to look for the pitch degree identification. It looks like 12 degree pitch blocks to me. Now with 2 up and a full load of fuel I reckon my Thruster climbs out very well - nothing spectacular mind, but not bad all the same. The tacho reads 6100 - 6200 max revs, and does not sound like it is screaming it's t#ts off. A mate of mine has a digital rev counter gauge that reads a reflective tape stuck on a prop blade. I'm going to see if I can borrow it this weekend to check the revs. Just a thought - is there another way to check the degrees on a pitch block - is it simply a matter of reading the sloping face against the square edge to give you the angle? Pud
