Now I'm not saying your advice is not practical Guernsey, so don't take this the wrong way now:amazon: I did find a device you can turn up on a lathe, on EAA, it is called "Sensitive Static Prop Balancer". Go to http://www.eaa.org/experimenter/articles/2009-11_howto_props.asp to check it out. I just need a lathe expert to help me out - might contact Pommy John eh Riley? Pud

    Is anybody doing such a thing out of Bindoon Riley? What about if my mate wanted to have an hour or so with an instructor type to get him current again? I can take him for a ride but that's it! Pud

    So, here I am way out in the sticks and I want to balance my propeller to ensure it is right, and not shaking my aircraft to bits. How do I go about doing that? What would you do? What I'm looking for is something I can do myself. Oh yeah, nearly forgot - it's a 3 blade Brolga Pud

    Yeah they are good alright nunan. The view out the front is fantastic, especially on late final, when I have heard the expletive "Sh!t" on a number of occasions. Just great when you get used to it though. Pud

    Yep, you are correct rgmwa, takes me 3.5 hours by road from Leeming. It suits me because the area is my home area - grew up there and know everybody in the area. Also get to chill out in the peace and quiet. The drive gives you plenty of time to think. It's a bit hot at this time of the year too, but another 4-5 weeks will see a change in the weather. Pud

    I thought I'd post a photo, well Google Earth image of my home strip at Wirraway Farm North Gabbin in Western Australia. Wirraway Farm is owned by a longtime good friend of mine who is an aviation enthusiast with a special interest in WWII German aircraft, especially the ME 109 and the Folke Wulf - he will crucify me for the spelling of that!!! Anyway we have both acquired Thrusters, built a hangar and Poll did the strips you see in the photo. What do you reckon? Pud

    Yeah, it wasn't that good a day. I spoke with Greg Beecroft after he came back from the set task on the day. He gave it away after turning at Grass Valley for the leg to Shackleton as the thermals were very variable. So he only did one leg, and, as you would know, Greg is no slouch in the gliding department!! I think he was the only one to even make the first leg. There was one outlanding and another pilot came very close before jagging some lift. Pud

    Couldn't have put it better myself eightyknots. The treatment also works very efficiently if you fill a couple of bottles with the mixture, expose some large roots and feed into the bottle. Cover over and let the treatment work it's magic. Pud

    What I have been told is that 582 Rotaxes are not prone to carbie icing because of the bing slide type carbies. Certainly my instructor when I was getting 'endorsed' on Thrusters did not have an issue - not even warming the engine on a long decent when practising engine failures. I like to watch the temp gauges and warm the engine from time to time, but this is for a different reason than carby ice though. Pud

    Well Frank, I might just have to look you up in August; I'm doing a road trip via Australia's longest short cut, The Outback Way, with friends. We will be visiting Cairns and Townsville during out trip before starting the long trek back west. So you may just have an uninvited guest call in one day - Me!! Pud

    After reading this thread I thought I'd give it a go. So, I went to Beverley today at the invitation of my fried Stefan who is an instructor with the Beverley Soaring Society to do a TIF. I had a great time but had to cut the flight short because I was getting motion sickness - buggar!! The glider is so much different to flying a Thruster it ain't funny!! I even had trouble keeping the glider balanced - watch the string, watch the string. Glide ratio is just a little better than my Thruster too:augie: Pud

    I was taught side slipping in the Drifter, and not just a quick lesson either, it was over a number of lessons and I had to get it right. Must say though that I haven't used it much since, and never in the Thruster - does anyone know how a Thruster handles the side slip? I'll give it a go next time I'm flying. The Thruster drops pretty quickly anyway when the power is reduced to idle. I can only think of one time when I could have sideslipped the Thruster to set up better for landing, as it was I just flared a bit 'hot' and let the speed wash off before doing a wheeler. Could still be useful on a short strip though. Pud
