  1. 1. try Speedify. It combines data from Wi-Fi and data from mobile into 1 stream. it is free and gives you 2GB / month of streaming data. In use, except updates, RWY doesnt use much data and Speedify can be disabled when you aren't using SkyEcho. or 2. A bit trickier 2.1 manually connect (not auto connect) to the SkyEcho-xxx via 192.164.1.4 and setup the skyecho ICAO, callsign, transmit etc. 2.2 disconnect from the sky echo but leave Wi-Fi on (Wi-Fi not connected to anything) If you are doing this at home you might have to prevent the tablet from autoconnection to the home Wi-Fi. at this point the tablet will not try to talk via Wi-Fi but will route data via the mobile network. As the SkEcho picks up ADSB-in data it will send messages out via port4000 on Wi-Fi which will be picked up by the tablet (and RWY if it is setup to listen for GDL-90 (UDP port4000)). I am lucky, I live under the Mascot northerly flightpath (there goes another on) so it is easy for me to test it. (Now ANZ106 @15,00 feet) Part of my prep at home is to configure the SkyEcho and have it set up for the next flight (QFA737 just went past at 3000'). I have had a bit of finger trouble such as leaving the ICAO address set to the previous plane, this confuses ADSB consolidation sites as it thinks that there are 2 planes in the one spot. If your transponder has ADSB out the skyecho out should be turned off. (BAW16 just went past at 1900' - might be something wrong with its baro) Cheers (QFA043 just went past at 2000')
  2. I have a 2 yo Samsung tablet, RWY and SkyEcho2. The combo can be set up to pick up both ASSB and OzRunways traffic. If you, also, get the Speedify app it works like a breeze. The OzRunways knowlege base has a variety of details
  3. I'm not sure if I would set much store in what Jefferson has to say "Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, owned more than 600 enslaved African Americans during his adult life. Jefferson freed two slaves while he lived, five others were freed after his death, including two of his children from his relationship with his slave (and sister-in-law) Sally Hemings." I suspect that the US founding fathers were a bunch of crooks!
  4. Which airfield? Public or private?
  5. Maybe 10 times more globally but not in Australia. A more appropriate measure would be failure RATES by category.
  6. Your subject line should have been "Do we need ASICs for an event at Tooraweenah?". That would have limited the scope for extraneous and irrelevant answers although, not reading NewsCrap papers I am in the dark about Islamic operatives and a Melb bookshop.
  7. A topic which is rarely discussed is the setting of flaps on take-off. It can mean a long flat flight into the fence or a Harrier Jump jet take-off depending on the conditions and settings.
  8. Forgot the biggy- submarines
  9. I'm not so sure about spectacular profits. The government has a habit of taking the lowest tender and sometimes this is with the intention of driving operators out of business so they can sponsor production in China. Another taktic is to defer government expenditure so that an Australian manufacturer will scrap their assembly line because there is no certainty about ever getting another contract. Think ships, armoured vehicles, planes, trains, automobiles, ferries, footwear, clothing, electronics. It is almost as if politicians and public servants hate Australia.
  10. Yes, I was expecting this rubbish to turn up but your speed on this occasion was peerless.
  11. But we don't know what background checks are undertaken as part of the ASIC investigation. I would have thought that "working with children" checks would be equally extensive but are much cheaper in comparison. The 100 point check is absolutely no guarantee of a persons integrity. Plenty of crooks, criminals, paedophiles and other lowlifes have licences and bank accounts. The 100 point check is only there to ensure that the gummint doesn't miss out on run of the mill taxes. We can't even get pollies to agree on a cashless gaming cards to keep ne'er do wells out of pubs, clubs and casinos. The owners and administrators of airports are entitled to ensure the bonafides of users of their facilities - to a certain extent the ASIC is about the best it gets BUT at a very high price.
  12. I'm not sure that RAAus is dragging anything. CASA is the devil in the detail. An RAAus medical costs bugger all, Class 2 medicals of any description can attract some horrific costs.
  13. That would appear to be the case at Camden but they haven't sought the protection of an ASIC and they don't have RPT. If you decide to go to lunch and visit HARS at Shellharbour you will need an ASIC (now $290.40 - inc CC fee)
  14. "Free" - sweet words to my ear. What app/product are you using?
  15. The SE2 is a very effective front end to a variety of apps - it provides an ADSB-out signal that contains an accurate GPS position (lat, long, height and ident) and receives similar ADSB-In info from all ADSB-out equipped A/C in range. What is required is to get some smarty to integrate the Out and In info in plane to produce an accurate system to provide proximity alerts. The beauty of SE2 (and some other ADSB systems) is that it does not depend upon ground stations or mobile towers (and which suit your SIM card). I may have missed it but there are some smart people out there doing majik things with Raspberry Pis and who may have already built an ADSB Prox detector that doesn't require one having one's head inside the plane staring at a tablet screen. I'm not sure that an ADSB prox device could/would/should be built by the regulators.
  16. RAAus has insurance - I'm not sure what it covers. Might be on their website.
  17. And they sell Coopers Stout.
  18. Have you tried to get the wheel nuts off with a standard brace?
  19. I'm sure there is an ADR that covers spares. The performance of some of these spare tyres is probably no worse than XPly tires on early holdens, fords, morris minors or gogomobiles. these days you probably need to call out NRMA to change the tire anyway (who carries a 6 foot wheel brace these days?) and their agent will give you instructions about what to do next. Got a 6 foot wheel brace? you don't need advice from us.
  20. My spare is 80k which is fast enough to get to a repair point (or even back to the big smoke for an exotic replacement). Being a member of NRMA helps.
  21. the number of drivers with CASA medicals is bugger all. Rather than caving in to each pressure group (like those with self certification following the homeopathic manual) the transport authorities have decided to insist on people doing it their way. Seems fair to me, I don't want to share the road with someone with an iridologist medical cert.
  22. or maybe they have.
  23. No, but the dopey politicians might forget what BOM stands for and claim that bombs is already provided for as part of the RAAF budget
  24. But it isn't private enterprise so it needs to be ahead of the game during budget time otherwise the smarties from the right wing media and the right wing think tanks will start up a pogrom of misinformation. How good do you think windy weather would be if they didn't get a daily feed of free data from BOM.
  25. Yes, I can see that but you should turn off "mobile data only" when at home to avoid a big bill when doing AvPlan and RWY data updates. You might also need to check on the need for other apps to be switched to "mobile data only" so you can continue to get data for things like Chrome, Google Search, Google Maps etc when in the air.
