  1. I started on one lesson a week, thought can i go for 2 lessons a week.. thankfully the jabs are cheaper to learn in than the large cessna 172.. My wife said she bought a hair straightner recently.. what could i say, when i fly each week. lol. Buy what you like.
  2. hey , Meeting up with a fellow flyer in Bathurst tomorrow.. they are flying up in their Savannah around 11am. Anyone else keen to make a trip.. Dave
  3. Hey Mick, no flying for me until Monday, did two flights this week which was really good. I am doing about 2 a week at the moment, alot better than 1 a week when i started. Whats the J2 like to fly, much different to the J160. ? The weather sure is fantastic up here, cold in morning -4 each day this week. I am studying for radio exam, probably will attempt that next week, already passed the Pre Solo Air Legislation exam. Dave
  4. Another successful day of flying/learning! ;Perfect day again in Bathurst.. It was about 11am by the time we taxiied out. First couple of normal circuits from RWY17, didnt do a bad job, feel like my take offs are heaps better now also. 3rd circuit saw my PIC engine idle just on base. Did my radio call and quickly setup 70 knots, turn towards runway more. Plenty of room, one stage of flaps, keep speed 70 knots, more like 65 in the jab 160. Requires nearly full trim back and pressure still to keep speed at 65. ON final and second stage flaps, perfect height and speed. Touch down and all good for first round. Happy with that.. Next one, PIC pulls back throttle just on downwind, make call for Cross strip 26 this time, dirt runway this time. Everything setup well and grease the landing in.. Dirt a lot more forgiving as you land. The next few not too bad, i believe i passed the forced landings though.. I wonder what will be next.. Radio exam next week, getting alot closer to solo .. not rushing though..
  5. Another great flying day, forced landings again and a couple of normal circuits! My first glide was better than my normal approach, go figure. Had a couple of not so normal landings, manageable though. All up we did 8 circuits, mostly glides, with a whirlywind thrown in on 3rd touch n go to scare me half to bits, caught it only just with rudder.. All up was quite happy with the day. Another day in air tomorrow morning.. 16.3 hours and counting. Dave
  6. Congrats on your solo.. well done! Keep up the flying.!
  7. Hi Mick, Sounds like you had a good day flying, would of been nice to go up again, will try and get 2 flights this week or maybe even three , see what happens with weather. Flying home 500ft would of been nice. Will find out when open day will occur again. Keep well and let you know how i go tomorrow with my forced landings again. Dave
  8. Hi Mick, no i didnt fly today, sounded busy on CTAF from my scanner at home. . Im back on Tuesday, hopefully weather heading this way doesnt disturb that again. It was a brilliant day here.. would of been great to be up in the air . Instructor is at White Cliffs with many others until Monday i believe. I wait to Tuesday.. 15.1 hours up and counting! Dave
  9. These are fantastic guys.. well done. great humour. Story heard many years ago on an old ATC freq 127.3 Also was published in “ On the Airbands “ by a good friend. A NRL footy game was being played this particular day and I guess a lot of people missing out on the game whether it be passengers or pilots, or even ATC controllers. It goes something like this. REGO numbers not real Qantas 1 - Melbourne Center would you happen to have the latest football scores please Melb C – Qantas 1 yes they are ….. Qantas 1 – Thanks Melbourne Center appreciate this, passengers will also be very happy. Ah New Zealand 46 – Melbourne Centre could you please repeat those results please as we had missed them. Melb C - NZ 46, yes they are again …. NZ 46 - Thanks for that. Ansett 123 (yes it was that long ago) .. Melbourne Centre, really sorry for this, could you please repeat those results again. Melb Center – Ok everyone, if I have to mention these scores one more time, my fellow workers are going to beat the hell out of me! I will now say. The silence was deafening. I thought it was one of the best I have ever heard.
  10. Hey Rach, yeh it was 3 deg when i went to airport this morning, 9am. My hands froze while doing pre flight. I think it was -2 overnight though. I couldnt believe how busy it was. Gliders were already were up and flying, many departing aircraft, REX Saab on tarmac while run up was done. Taxiied out to Rwy 17, another jab following us down behind us. It sure was a busy day, looking around everywhere .. I only made 4 touch n go as we just had so much happening. I need more practice for sure, i was happy what i did, the Jab sure does like to glide with idle power. Have fun today with your training area flight, will be good today. Not cloud in the sky here, so i hope its same for you. When do you think will take your first passenger up! I did the Pre Solo Air Leg exam and passed, happy with that, have the Flight Radio exam next, maybe next week, been studying though, should be pretty right. Have a great flight and talk later Dave
  11. Hey mate, I sure did fly, the whole population of Bathurst Thought the same. I did practice forced landings, bit busy had to do go arounds. I be back again next week. Great day indeed.
  12. Have had some wild weather over last 2 days, here in Bathurst around 3am this morning had high winds upto 62 km/h, 26 mm rain . Its still bucketing down here now. Thredbo is interesting, Pressure 999.9 -2.3deg 50 km/h winds now at WNW. Snow fields should see some good snow from this front. Dave Bathurst
  13. Hey all, While this weather might be holding back some flying!! Apart from all the commercial jets.. Maybe some people could share some funny stories they have been involved in or heard on radio scanner.. If you want to keep the rego out or flight numbers, that of course is fine.. dont want to upset anyone. Who has a beauty to start with! Dave
  14. The weather today canned my lesson for forced landings.. hopefully the weather holds up for 1pm tomorrow.. forecast says possible snow on higher ground tomorrow.. Certainly was bad today.. Heard Rex SAAB on radio scanner , he advised on a 10 mile final then cancelled and did go around , back upto 6000 ft for another go.. Fog had rolled in, quite a few aircraft were in holding pattern above Bathurst.. Been awhile since ive heard that occur. Last time was Bathurst 1000 races few years back when fog set in on race day, countless amount of aircraft including Lear jets, a BAE 146 , Cessnas.. Amazing to hear. The chatter between them all was quite amusing. I had to resort to Flight sim today, no real flying! Downloaded a fantastic Cirrus SR 22, full glass cockpit.. working out the panels was fun.. Dave
  15. Live ATC Radio Online Bankstown tower . Good listening.
  16. Tuesday was another successful day with Flapless approaches and Landings. At first thought the weather was going to hinder our flight, not so. We had our theory on flapless and glides, emergency landings, then it was off to prepare the aircraft, mind you first had to ask many guys to help move the monster in the hangar, Glider tow parked in front of two jabs, no way on earth could you move that on your own. By the time we got JAB out, weather was clear and actually sunny in spots.. damn forgot sunnies and was blinding a couple of times. Flapless was quite interesting, didnt find it that bad, just a little quicker and more throttle control needed, real fine adjustments and nose up attitude for 75 knots. I managed them alright, could be better , but i was happy, so was instructor. Next week is Forced landings.. bring it on. I have started to study for AIR LAW and Flight radio exams soon.. get ready for solo.. im upto 14 hours now, so wont be far away. Mick sounded like you flew yourself silly the other day! How do you get sick of flying! All fun though all the same. Dave
  17. Bathurst man survives light plane crash - Local News - News - General - Western Advocate here is another story in the Bathurst local paper, he was a local guy, unsure of his name, but i could imagine he would be well known.
  18. Hi all, Just saw on news that a Air van crashed at Orange after clipping top of hangar and nosedived, luckily the 43 yo pilot wasnt hurt too badly. Aircraft was on a delivery from Parkes to Orange when the accident happened. Plane nosedives into tarmac after clipping hangar - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Dave
  19. This flying is addictive! I read an article recently in a flying mag, where they stated that flying is like alcohol.. haha. You just want more and more of it! At least one doesnt make you sick! (pending how well you fly i guess) lol Rach, well done on your trip down south, bet it was so much fun. Lucky for you to have own plane which would help with so much more flying. ! Well done! I am sure your future passengers cant wait to go flying with you.. considering can only take one, will be like a toss of a coin. Good luck with that! As with my lesson on Sunday, i really finally have got the idea of sorting out the right throttle and angle, flare as i land! Instructor was happy. My lesson tomorrow might no go ahead, cloud cover coming over and looks like will rain tonight. Shame, but cant help the weather! Will have to wait for next week as weather looks bad until then. Keep flying and be safe everyone! Dave
  20. Hi Rach, thanks , it was a nice calm day, i went flying today 1130am, it was the calmest yet. I trimmed off at 3400 ft circuit height and let go of stick, smoother then driving on the road. Fantastic day for circuits, landings really alot better today, levelling off at a better height and throttling back so much better. Really happy with the day. I have all the radio calls pretty good also, (radio scanner helps, been listening awhile). Plenty of action today with gliders, cessnas, choppers all joining the circuit today. Made for interesting flying, keeping eye on all aircraft. Pretty happy that no one really interrupted the flying though. I go back on Tuesday for forced, flapless landings etc. Looking forward to that as well. Dave
  21. Well done Rach you finally did it... Congrats, guess you wont have to worry so much anymore. One day will have to make a flight to Bathurst and me to your airport. Dave
  22. A friend came out to witness my flying and took some pics also.. David Carroll's Photos - Flying Photos | Facebook check out photos here. Im in red shirt, other guy is my instructor Chris from Central West Flying. Dave
  23. Fantastic news there, keep up the good work. Hope to do mine in the weeks to come.
  24. This is a great topic for those learning in a Jab 160 like myself (12.4 hours so far) . I do agree with many comments of the landings of Jabs. I have only done 5 hours of circuits and certainly feel that its a complex feet, stick movement all the way down . Ive heard the saying, if you can fly a jab, you can fly anything. On Tuesday we had many more circuits, i managed 3 pretty good landings, then the next i ballooned terribly and we did a go around, well the instructor did. Amazing how quick things can change and how a good landing prior can turn bad the next one. I got my composure back and went for another round, again not as bad but still tricky getting that last phase of holding nose wheel off, correct throttle position etc. I do admit i love the Jab 160, not that i have been in anything else as yet, the club has a 230, which i will experience when doing Navs. I guess its what people get used too. Keep up with the good topic, interesting reading . !! Dave
  25. This flying just gets better and better! Another 1.3 hour today doing circuits.. These landings, i have to say, seem like each and everyone is different. I am getting better, the approach seems pretty good now, the final stage of flare and right power always gets me. What is everyone elses idea of a perfect landing, what do they like ? I think ive worked out my pattern. Although they never seem to stay the same. What i will say, clear weather as far as the eye can see. QNH 1020, 3 knot wind at about 080. -4 frost, no fog, well at airport we didnt, in Bathurst we did. Bathurst Airport Weather Cam provided by Central West Flying check out the webcam the flying school has. I always have a quick look before i fly to see if we have fog. I fly again tomorrow morning 11am precise. Cheers for another chapter. Dave
