  1. Thanks Phil, I've worked Essendon, Mackey, Avalon and Mackay towers, I take a very casual, relaxed approach, while being professional but I don't really stress a great deal, I love the job a great deal, I am fully immersed in aviation, I just love the freedom we have.
  2. Ben87r, no I'm a REAL controller, I work at Adelaide Tower and fly out of Aldinga.
  3. As an ATC you can tell in be voices and actions who doesn't fly very often, as a pilot, when you hear traffic in the circuit making calls for the wrong end of he runway, or forgetting to put their gear down.
  4. Awesome Doug, our love to you and Lisha, hope you are well, any chance of seeing a flying video of the infamous "YIPPEE YI OO" I doubt I spelt it right !
  5. This is a post to the bloke who had the partial engine failure on departure from The Avalon Airshow, it was the Sunday afternoon, the aircraft was a Gazelle, the pilot got airborne to about 200ft still over the runway the engine didn't maintain full power. This fella landed straight ahead on the runway, after assessing the problem, he felt it was resolved and requested to line up for departure, while back tracking the engine problem reoccurred, instead of pushing the situation he made the right decision and overnight-ed at Avalon. As the air traffic controller on the other end of the radio, it was great to see a pilot aviate, communicate and when in doubt he too the safe and smart option to double check and ensure his aircraft was right to fly. Congratulations and well done.
  6. You'll never get lost or lose situational awareness ever again, just remember to use your paper maps and charts plus required paperwork when you fly. A side note, get a good Belkin charger that has two USB slots, one for your phone and the other for your iPad, the cheap ones tend to emit static or EMR through the electrical system, the good ones are really clean.
  7. I love my Garmin 196, in a mount and with an external antenna, great for supplementing my situational awareness, but Ozrunways has to be the BOMB, it is awesome, on an iPad 3 gs, can only use it as a situational awareness tool, but it is truly AWESOME ! Plus the iPad has so many uses and you can use the street maps that are provided.
  8. Well done, the next big one is certificate time, good luck with it.
  9. Only when the engine stops, but I'd love to give it a go, the pure joy of soaring like an Eagle, what a rush.
  10. Baron BE58, great aircraft, I'd have one in the hanger right now if I had the money.
  11. Excellent, no $600 fee but if you have it, I'll take a donation. Contact RAA, Zane Tully, OPS Manager and great bloke, RAA will get an organisation wide approval to get entry into the RESTRICTED area, it won't be a Class D towered Airport for the Airshow, it will be a great adventure, drop me a call over the next few days and I'll try and answer any questions you may have.
  12. Might be the oil injection ?
  13. Is the Rv6a registered RAA?
  14. I thought Wal had left Bert flood a few years ago, any how, your information is exactly what I use, max RPM 6400 for no more than 5 min and cruise at 6000 RPM, this is all in my Fisher Mk1 with a Blue top Rotax 582.
  15. RobynD39, what aircraft are you flying ? The drifter or RV9A?
  16. Cool, I am flying in from Adelaide and will be an Air traffic controller in the tower at Avalon for the duration of the airshow. It may look complicated but with a comprehensive brief and a really good study of the maps, YAVE or Avalon East is a great option if you like to camp under wing, excellent environment for a great deal of learning from other pilots.
  17. You can fly into Little River with permission from the owner, as long as you do so outside Avalon hours. Call me if you would like to chat about it, have a look at the Melbourne VTC and VNC. 0408931040
  18. Yeah I got that, much the same thing thou, they are both great versions of much the same thing. Once a tail dragger pilot, always a tail dragger pilot I guess.
  19. Motzy, I agree with your statement, great little aircraft, I flew one recently from Proserpine to Monto, at 6500ft on top with 5 - 10 kts on the tail it was like soaring with the gods, I had the doors off and just loved every second of the flight, was a tail dragging Kitfox, but awesome non the less. All aircraft deserve our respect, due diligence and care, and as you say, it could have been a bird, bad fuel, atmospheric conditions, any number of factors. I hope we hear a conclusive determination of cause / events relating to this and other accidents / events. All the information adds to our learning and development as better airmen or air women.
  20. Not if there is no phone coverage in the valley ?
  21. Just so everyone knows, the Dornier carries a Sat phone so if THEY are in an area outside mobile phone coverage and in an area of poor VHF coverage they can call AMSA to make other arrangements. SAT phones and mobile phones cannot communicate with each other unless the mobile is in an area of coverage ! If your phone is not interrogating a mobile tower, it can't be located, they need a minimum of three towers to triangulate your phone's position to anything usable ( less than 1km square).
  22. Maj, sorry to tell you but the Dornier doesn't have that technology as standard equipment, they can have a portable unit added but it is very unusual and the last time they used one was in Port Morsby, they didn't use it for the Dragon in QLD, they found it by following usual search protocol, mobile phones had nothing to do with it, and rarely ever does. I spoke to the Dornier crew today so that was from the "horses mouth", they have asked for similar technology but it is not readily available at the moment. But what you said towards the end is so spot on, ELT, PLB'S, Transponder, mobile device, mirror, flashlight, battery chargers, spare batteries, everything you can do to aid in your recovery will hopefully shorten the time taken to find you. I think everyone shoud read the EMERG section in ERSA frequently, if its not in there ( mobile phones, SPOT) don't think someone is looking for it ( from a SAR organisation that is ).
  23. All 1200 codes are the same, no extra info is available with the transponder, either position fixing from pilot report of position, squawk ident or other identification method, or squawked 7700.
  24. How do Search and Rescue now where to look, do they get your SPOT data sent to them, or is it up to you or your home base to send them the data. ? ( Admin)
