    Thanks, I have that one already. The speeds quoted only give a very rough idea because they are not related to any actual weight. Also why does the gross weight vary with different engines? Phil

    I am acquiring a Tyro 95.10 ultralight. The information that comes with it about speeds and general handling seems a bit sparse. Can anyone help fill me in, especially if they have actually flown one.;) Thanks a lot, Phil

    Ross, I will operate from my property which is 30km west from Armidale. I have room for a 250m strip with good approaches. I am building a simple hanger at the moment. (well not actually now because I am in Sydney) I did my training at Inverell, 100km drive from home, and will initially fly from there while I get the hang of the new plane. Phil

    Hi to everyone. I have been lurking on this forum for a few months while I did my training. I passed my final flight test today for my pilot certificate. Did my training at Inverell on a Drifter 503. I have come to Ultralights after 15 years in gliding and a break of 5 years. Not too many Ultralights around here that I know of. I am between Armidale and Inverell. In the process of buying a Tyro 95.10 single seater which I will initially fly at Inverell and then bring back home. Phil

    What type of 2 stroke oil do people use for a Rotax 447? Is there any special reason why? I have read recently that synthetic 2 stroke oils, while having many good properties, are not too good for long term protection since they drain away from bearings and may allow corrosion. Phil

    Southern Cross Gliding Club at Camden NSW built a hanger like the one described by Ian about 15 years ago. I guess it is still there. The glider wings overlapped for even better stacking. Gliders sit with one wing up and one down of course. Phil

    Hi, If you have a pusher engine, the really cheap, and effective, option is a "yaw string" as used on gliders. Simply a piece if knitting wool taped to the centre of the windscreen. It is very sensitive to yaw, enhanced by the curvature of most windscreens. Phil

    Ian, I am going through this exercise at the moment also. I am looking at a 10m x 7m x 3m high open front shed to house a small ultralight. I have found that my local timber truss maker can supply a 10m length truss which his design program says will work at 1.2m spacing. These are only $160 each. These can be bolted to the top of 50x50mm steel posts and appropriately cross braced with steel strapping in the roof and walls, along with steel "top hat" purlins and steel corrugated sheeting to make a strong shed. If second hand iron is used the cost could be around $2000 without doors. Centre mullion roller doors could be the way to go. Simple and relatively cheap. I was really suprised at the low cost when I priced it. Phil

    Yes, That is why competition sailplanes carry water ballast, to fly faster for the same L/D. When the lift drops you drop the water to get a better sink rate. Phil

    Not the same thing, but... Look at this site http://www.cartercopters.com/ They are developing what amounts to a type of gyrocopter using a combination of a slowed rotor and wings to combine VTOL and high speed flight. I think it is a very exciting concept. They are very advanced now. Phil

    Yes Chris, I am looking at the one listed at $6000. It is at St George in QLD I have seen photos and it looks good.

    Hi, What inspections should be done before purchasing an aircraft, and who should do them? I am still a student pilot considering purchase so I have something to fly when I finish training. The aircraft being considered is a Tyro Mk2 Thanks, Phil

    Thanks for those comments Chris. I was hoping that it would be that sort of aircraft. Just what I think I am looking for. I would imagine that the running costs would be relatively low also. I have looked at the web site and various pictures but there is nothing like other peoples comments. I hear that there is also a modified version with aluminium covered wings. Phil

    Hi to all, Does anyone have any comments, good, bad, about the Tyro MK2 single seater 95.10 ultralight. I am looking for something simple and economical to operate from my own property where I can make a 300 metre paddock strip. The Tyro seems to come up at attractive price second hand and seems designed for what I want to do which is just fun local flying from bush strips. A single seater will do me. I am currently converting from gliding and training on a Drifter so it would help if the characteristics were similar. Cheers, Phil
