  1. Great answer thanks for that.
  2. While flying a week or so ago my instructor told me to reduce revs due to the risk of damage to the timber prop in the rain. While taxing and running up you have to be very careful of stone damage. Why do we use timber props and not an alloy or carbon fibre prop?
  3. Thanks Ian. looking forward to trying them out.
  4. I have done that a few times in a glider. I don't want to do it in the jabiru though.
  5. Hi Adam. I am also learning to fly RA. I fly a Jabiru 160 at the moment. Keep us informed then I have someone to judge how bad I am against. LOL
  6. Where do they keep the cardboard boxes for landings. LOL
  7. On order so I am now waiting like a kid at Christmas. LOL:augie:
  8. Thank you everyone for the advice. I think i will go with the Rec headset for now atleast.
  9. This is a hard question seeing Ian sells headphones but can all the highly experienced people here advise me on what headphones to buy. I don't really like sharing the ones provided in the school aircraft. I personally perspire a lot so my own headphones is a good way to go I think. Has anyone here used the headsets Ian sells? I would happily support Ian.
  10. I am new to powered flight and after reading this forum for a few weeks now I am not sure whether to continue or go back to sailing. The more I read the more I am convinced that flying a Jabiru will eventually kill me or at the very least I will surely have an engine failure. It seems that flying RA aircraft is more dangerous than racing a formula 1 car. Now I am sure this is not the case. If it was then no one in their right mind would fly. Maybe it is just that RA aircraft are not safe compared to GA aircraft. Ok now lets get real. How many RA aircraft are flying on any given weekend? How many of those are Jabiru aircraft? How many engine failures are there per hours flown? I agree with safety. I agree with training to deal with all possible eventualities but what are the true chances of an engine failure? Is it more likely that an engine will fail in an RA aircraft? Ok now you can all convince me that flying is safe and I can keep flying.
  11. I lost my best mate to cancer 3 years ago. I would rather go doing something I love. Dazza it is tough some times but enjoy your life and spend time remembering those that we love but have lost.
  12. Mental note to self. Practice practice practice and oh yes carry my ipad. Lol
  13. My wife bought the ticket for the SIM for me but they have a 100 kg weight limit so that put me out. As it turned out I have flown with the young captain at Gawler in gliders. Sam had a ball flying in the SIM.
  14. I haven,t been around here for long but I did get to chat to David. Condolences to David,s family. Atleast he passed doing something he was passionate about. RIP.
  15. My wife took the SIM for a run last week and barrel rolled the 737 over Adelaide. I told her she better keep her hands off the controls when flying with me.
  16. Probably a newbie question but if you have lifted off and find you have no ASI how do you land safely without risking stalling?
  17. Hi Peter. When learning to fly gliders I lost it on take off once and the tug dropped the cable when he lost sight of me. Take off I don't have an issue. I just wish I could get my eye in and nail the landings. LOL
  18. Congratulations. It must be a fantastic feeling. I hope to get there one day. I am in no hurry. Like you say it is better to learn and be competant before going solo. I want to feel safe and not scared silly when i finally get my licence.
  19. Hi Mr Mal. Welcome from another newbie. I have 12 hrs in and I am looking forward to going solo one day. Still solo is only the start of the adventure.
  20. Lol. That was a joke when my wife asked why it cost me $400 to go for a coffee. Sorry it didnt come out the way it was intended. As soon as I get to fly with my wife I will be bringing her down so she can share the coffee. The view out from Goolwa is amazing. I hope to return soon.
  21. This was flying along the Goolwa coast heading for the Murray Mouth
  22. I had 6 hrs up but hadnt flown for 3 weeks. I decided to spend 2 hours a day for 3 days trying to get landings right. I was very lucky that my Instructor Ian from RPA Murray Bridge could spare 3 days to spend trying to teach me something. Thursday was a great day with nil wind, blue skies and smooth air. I did 14 landings in 2 hours with engine outs thrown in to keep me trying. We went over to another local airfield just to change things. I was amazed at how much feel I had lost in 3 weeks off. I ended Thursday with a good landing. Not great but good. Friday I beg Ian for a change from circuits and he kindly agreed. We flew from Murray Bridge along the edge of Lake Alexandrina to Goolwa. My first attemt at a bitumen runway saw me really sweating. After a very ordinary coffee I took off and flew along the coast and then back to Murray Bridge. Just to upset me Ian made me do 3 circuits. Saturday was work day. Circuits, circuits and more circuits. Around 15 landings at 2 different fields. I side slipped into Rolos loosing 1000 feet in no time. More glide aproaches and then home to Murray Bridge. I am still not consistant at landings. I am improving but still a way to go. I take my hat off to instructors that have the patience to do what they do. Oh well next weekend will be more circuits.
  23. Great looking aircraft. I am jealous. Would love to fly something like that. Enjoy every minute.
  24. Good looking machine Tomo. Now please ignore my absolute ignorance and explain to me what sort of craft it is and how it differs from other aircraft. I am brand new to RA and have a LOT to learn and a million questions.
  25. I think it is my glider experience but I like the idea of a low wing rather than the high wing. Gliders got really hot when sitting at Gawler in line waiting to fly. Once in the sky though the view was amazing. I find even the 160 Jab just a little claustrophobic. I think I will keep going with the Jab till I get my licence then look into converting so I can hire the SportsstaR.
