Learn to fly in a real plane. Some RAA aircraft give you far better hands on flying. Learn in RAA aircraft and a Cessna /piper is a piece of cake. You will find most RAA.schools every bit as professional and the syllabus as extensive as G.A. At least check out an RAA aircraft to form your opinion.

The runway was hard. no reason to stall.The runway length / choice did not cause this accident. -
I am based at Wangaratta. Take off was on 27.. Full length available as no aircraft were parked on the runway. (of course or it would not be used.)Only a fence at the west end to clear ,trees are approx. 150 mtrs past the fence. Rotax motor 100h.p., The press thinks a stall means the engine has stopped (motor vehicle mentality) this is where the engine fail report came from. Weather clear ,light wind from Sth west .No thermal activity early in the morning. Close to max TOW. I feel sorry for the owner pilot ,but also very happy pilot and Pax. were un injured. The fire truck was only minutes from my call. but carbon fibre and a load of fuel resulted in an intense and dangerous blaze. Yes all that is left is the port landing light and the elevator and rudder. The instruments all melted. To assist organizing the clean up we have called in removal experts and await their advice as burnt carbon fibre is worse than Asbestos. . I suggest that stalling on take off in a fast thoroughbred aircraft is not the thing to do. Just lucky it stalled very low and avoided a cartwheel .CFI

Lovely Banks is all houses. Closed some 20 yrs ago. I operated on our small farm 8klm NNW of lovely banks airstrip.Flew with Jack Ellis at main airfield .took his 210 to Alice Springs .

Yes Jim is at Goorambat.Jim & I go back to 1989 when I was CFI of Geelong Ultralights (now Geelong Sports Aviators) We had 10 thrusters on my airfield at Lovely Banks. Jim has to be a great Bloke as he still has a Thruster .I am now CFI at Wangaratta using a eurofox. Just waiting for his strip to dry so I can fly in for a coffee again.

Flying training is available at Wangaratta airport again. At present only RAA but by new year also G.A. Bi Enniels e.t.c.

Thats a really nice looking aircraft you have there. WA seems to be more into thrusters than over here.

Hi Pud. Read your aircraft story yesterday,fascinating.Here is someone totally involved .Great stuff. I really miss the thruster flying but near Maroochydore Q,ld its less "outback"fun. The first ThrusterI flew was 25-0001 on 04/1984, we had 0019 in apl,84.(Geminis)first TST was 0093 Oct ,87 first T-500 was 250232 Nov ,88 so yours must be shortly after that date. The name John Giles rings a bell.I,m sure it was. By the way. the T600 is not a real plane as the tailwheel is in the wrong end. There was a fatal crash in one near Geelong a few yrs ago due to the stainless steel strut attach bracket being straightened. Stainless doesnt like bending much so it cracked and broke. But there was another accident near Canberra when The guys changed strips,forgot the HT power line and it sawed thru the strut leaving the wing hanging in the flying wire. Its on video from a camera in the plane. One Guy was bruised and the other a broken rib or 2. Tough plane the thruster.

By the way.We delivered 3 thrusters to Collie W.A. 1988 reg no 250177 was one.I still have the guys name.One got grass rash before we got there as the guys tried D.I.Y training . Doesnt work.

Most of the 80,s photos are slides I,ll have to upgrade.I will include the T600 photo if I can manage the system.My first flight in "ultralights'was a Jackaroo in1983,a broomstick without a windscreen,.then chinook,beaver then Gemini.allowable ceiling then was 300ft(idiots).There is a Kestrel which is a thruster lookalike I flew in N.T. Anothe good thing with a Thruster (unmodified) before the T500 is that it wont exceed VNE vertical dive making it pretty foolproof. There were many "prangs "in the early days and no one got hurt,at our school anyway.one pupil flew straight into a tree full power without a scratch. We even did some thermalling,and seabreeze front engine off flying. Its a different story these days,fast glass ships and much less forgiving. cheers

It has been sold.The buyer is going to tour AU in it instead of the caravan Grey Nomad thing. The 25Kg luggage capacity helps.

No hangar problem with 7801 now. I was lucky enough to accompany the new owner to fly it from Caloundra to Tocumwal. 100kts cruise G/S with a headwind. 18ltrs/hr. Overnight Narromine(great spot, motel on field $75 for 2)a pit stop Temora on the way. It is very very comfortable for long flights.

You are talking one of the best fun aircraft I have owned and flown.I recently flew the T600 in UK 2200 jabiru power,vne raised to 90kts. But they cost 30000 Pounds.. Back in the 80,s we had 11 thrusters hangared on my strip.

It doesnt need a hangar.The one at Caloundra lives outside.No hangar costs. ties down ok being a nosewheel aircraft.

I have just flown a sparverio at Caloundra. Most impressed.A calm day helps but it was rock solid to fly. It has a trim lever which I find far better than electric on the stick,mind you once set the trim is really for fine tuning in the cruise. Reduce the power and the nose lowers.increase power and it climbs,once set I did not touch the trim after take off. The stall was preceeded with pronounced buffeting so you could not miss it. With a really high nose up attitude there was as expected a 30deg wing drop which rudder and power corrects immediately. In all one of the nicest,most comfortable aircraft I have flown. I certainly (personal view) prefer it to the texan.
