  1. does anyone know what sort of aircraft it was?
  2. at Duxford, near Cambridge in the UK, there's a BMW 801 radial engine out of a FW190. IMHO it is worth the trip to England just to see that engine. I think it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I read somewhere that 80% of the development time and money that went into Wright Duplex Cyclones (as in the B29) was in the cooling system. The 801 also looks as tho' an immense amount of money was spent on the developing the cooling fins. They're gorgeous.
  3. Advertiser reports he's in a stable condition, which I guess is good news: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/glider-pilot-seriously-injured-after-crash-landing-at-waikerie-airfield-in-the-riverland/news-story/89c74cf69090f50eab286d4b275a18bf hope he makes a speedy recovery.
  4. surrounded by tiger country.....
  5. light aircraft missing near Katoomba, one person on board, according to this ABC report: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-27/search-underway-for-light-plane-missing-in-nsw-blue-mountains/7205624
  6. yeah, I saw that. I don't like the "initially he was Ok then his condition deteriorated" stuff. Sounds like internal bleeding, eg ruptured spleen can present like that. They said he landed in vineyards. They look a bit like tank traps, metaphorically speaking. hope he's OK.
  7. you don't think the politics of buying from the US come into this? I think we could do worse than buy some A10s. I saw one in an air museum in the US, and standing there looking at it, you can see that it was designed around the cannon, which is huge. one of those diving towards you in ground attack would be terrifying. If ever we have hostile foreign forces on the ground here, they would add a useful capability.
  8. I always wiggle the flap handle to check it's seated in properly. I've never taken off with full flaps. I've done zero flaps t/o in the jab, and it's fine.
  9. no, it's my fault for asking. it's not surprising that we have non-shrinking violet personalities involved. And of course someone else's account of the day might be different. As a mere jabiru pilot, I'm very reluctant to criticize airline pilots, who carry so much responsibility, and have immense training and skills. Perhaps we should say no more other than it was a great collective effort, in difficult circs, with a happy ending.
  10. that presumably you can't share?
  11. what was the 727 like? The DC9 had 2 JT8s, the 727 had 3.
  12. that's very interesting; those LAX-ORD flights seemed to take forever, around 4hrs. They must have been in MD-80s. I obviously wasn't paying enough attention.
  13. interesting comment....you must have some background info??
  14. they did an absolutely outstanding job, in my opinion.
  15. acc. to wikipedia (?reliable?), a DC9-30, like TAA had, had a range of 1923 miles. SYD-PER is about 2050, so they squeezed some more fuel in. Landing on fumes would give you white hair.
  16. interesting, I several times did LAX-Chicago as a passenger in DC9s, on United. That must have been at the limit of their range. Not my favorite plane, especially with 5 abreast and I suspect designed for 4, and very noisy especially near the back. I don't miss them at all.
  17. they also don't mention how you get that slumped over pilot out of his seat. Imagine trying to pull 100kg of dead weight up and out, when you're standing behind and to one side, difficult I'd think.
  18. are you serious? this really happened? how long ago was this?
  19. I was flying out of there yesterday. You were a long way from home, shafs
  20. how do you know he blew himself up? as opposed to being murdered?
  21. where was this? YMBD?
  22. that sounds great, I will try it.
  23. I don't think it's clear if the dead passenger let off the bomb. he might have just been the unlucky person sitting on it.
  24. I'll give that a go.
  25. I'm jealous. it can take me half an hour to reverse a trailer into my driveway. people say it's easy to reverse a trailer, but if you don't have that skill, it's not.
