  1. Nev they sure built them to last! We sometimes see DC-4 being flown in northern Canada by Arctic Air. I presume that VH-TAB had already done a bit of work before this film; if not, it would have averaged 13 hours work per day.
  2. Our little town had its own airline, with three or four small feeder planes that did daily flights Gunnedah-Tamworth-Quirindi-Sydney. A small group of us is writing a history of aviation in the Quirindi district (every time an old fart turns up they get a proper interrogation). We have turned up some surprising stories.
  3. I always liked carnards, but my enthusiasm waned after guiding a Longeze to his parking space at Temora. They sure don’t like rough ground and short runways. Is there as STOL canard design?
  4. Did we see you in that movie, Nev?
  5. Weather cams are becoming more numerous. I hope to install one or two at YQDI, which might be a great resource for aviators approaching the Liverpool Range from the north.
  6. Crickey PM, I just added those two numbers together…
  7. Technology makes it easy to keep everyone in the loop, but it can lead to unforeseen results. I’m secretary of a couple of organisations and at the end of each meeting get someone nearby to chech that my minutes are corect. That takes a minute or two while people are socialising. Then I instantly send the minutes to all members via group email. One night I got a mate in trouble because his wife saw the email come in and when he eventually got home she demanded to know where he’d been- the meeting finished hours ago!
  8. If you thought these engines were simple, watch this:
  9. Nev I can’t see the problem; the Thruster is a simple design, the main structural members are easy to access and I reckon a small cansiter-style BRS could be mounted above the wing without adding too much drag. Even better, the original designer is still around to advise.
  10. Yes, the kids of today just don’t seem to understand old technology… But they sure beat the pants off us old farts with the new stuff: https://www.smh.com.au/national/victoria/meet-the-melbourne-kids-helping-australia-track-the-virus-20210924-p58ul0.html
  11. A fairly bleak picture. A recall a female student who trained as a tradie in the mines. I spoke to her after she had quit and gone into the finance sector. She explained she’d been worn down by persistent harassment on the worksite. I guess these cretins couldn’t understand that this drop-dead gorgeous blonde (with a brain) really wanted to work with tools. I fear the same for my granddaughters who also suffer from extreme attractiveness (didn’t get it from me). They love to help with my projects, and are learning how to operate a pick and shovel, my car, my rifle, etc. They have lots of opportunities, but I fear most kids -even in country towns- don’t. I have urban relatives whose kids have no manual skills or interests at all.
  12. Amazing what people will do to postpone the inevitable.
  13. My BRS harness is mounted to the wing spar bolts and the rear attachement points of the wing, to ensure the aircraft decends at the correct nose-down attitude. The straps are buried under a thin plywood skin. Wasn’t easy. Whether to pull the big red handle? Choose between arriving at terra firma with no control and travelling vertically at least 5 metres/sec (10 knots), or coming in at a shallow angle under some sort of control at 40 knots.
  14. This one has a few functions; the hi-tek hood is to shield it from the sun.
  15. That’s disappointing, Jackc. Our association/company should pull out all stops to help members trying to improve safety. Looks like you have 19 on the side of your plane; that should make it easier to modify. I totally agree with the posts supporting a BRS. I wouldn’t like to bale out of our little planes at low altitude -where most of our emergencies happen. There is more than one manufacturer of whole-plane parachutes. My BRS came with strict instructions on how to mount it. They insist the aeroplane arrives at the ground at a pronounced nose-down attitude, so the undercarriage absorbs most of the impact.
  16. A cheap kitchen timer stuck to panel has served me well.
  17. We sure need young flyers, so good luck to her!

  19. Beautiful! No matter how good some human flyers get, they can’t come close to the majesty of birds. A few months ago I posted this on another thread:
  20. Jackc why not wait till those wind arrows can push you home a lot faster?
  21. Congratulations on the plane, Bruce! I can’t believe an air-cooled head runs that cool. Hot water won’t test the actual operating temps (well above 100C). I removed all 4 of my sensors and used a tiny bolt to clamp them tightly together. Then I zapped them with a hot air gun whiie watching the MGL gauge. They went up and down the temp scale in unison, proving they all read the same. I also used two different probes to calibrate their readings, both while removed and installed. Ever since I insulated the first 150mm of the CHT cables with shrinkwrap they’ve read quite a bit higher. Lots of testing with independent probes tells me they’re pretty close to the actual hottest parts of the head, near the exhaust port. I’m happy to err in the side of caution, keeping climbout temps under 150C and cruising about 140C. I’m also trying to get my simple water injector ready for summer flying.
  22. Thems not strawberries, OT- they’re black cattle, tens of thousands of them.
  23. I just got back from a short flight. I know lots of people are finding lockdown tough, but spare a thought for these poor buggers:
  24. I guess I’m already a member. AFAIK, the CAP is still affiliated with the NSW VRA, if which I’ve been a member for forty years (just got home from a meeting, in fact). We have trained with Namoi Air Patrol, which sure was an eye-opener. Bluddy hard work searching from the air.
  25. When this plurry pandemic is finished with us I might take you up on that, Jackc! Like many on here, I can’t wait to be able to travel again. Mate, I suspect your light is being hid under a bushel (or did I just mangle that old saying?) If you have got this far in life you’re obviously brighter than many who make more noise!
